Poppyshine was so proud of her kits for growing into young apprentices, and that still remained true for Reedkit. She spent time grooming him in the morning and offered him quiet purrs of encouragement to him before she finally pulled back. “It’s time, sweetheart,” she purred.
She led Reedkit out of the nursery and took her place up on the willow branch. Giving a wide smile, she announced, “Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting.”
Reedkit's paws itched with enthusiasm, hardly able to stay still as his mother cleaned his fur. He'd finally get to see out of camp, get to train, to hunt..! Not to mention one step closer to becoming the greatest warrior! Reedkit glanced around camp, or, more specifically, the warriors. He couldn't wait to see who his own mentor would be! With a huge grin, the russet kit eventually willed himself to sit down, though his long tail still twitched with anticipation.
Poppyshine smiled at her son’s excitement and she looked back up to begin the ceremony properly. “Reedkit. You have reached your age of six moons and are ready to be apprenticed. From this day on until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Reedpaw.” Her heart swelled with pride. Her last son is now being apprenticed, and that left only one kit in the nursery. Once she was apprenticed, Poppyshine would leave the nursery. It felt like her home at this point. Her gaze shifted to another cat that she spent a lot of time with when he was a kit, and she fought her wider smile. “Your mentor shall be Hawkshriek. He has generations of talent behind him, and he will bestow you with that knowledge too.” Her adopted son teaching her biological son—Poppyshine couldn’t resist. She stepped down from the willow branch and waited for Reedpaw and Hawkshriek to complete the ceremony.
Hawkshriek sat among the crowd like many others, happy for his brother to have been apprenticed by — wait, what?Him? Freezing for a moment or two, the warrior thought he had misheard Poppyshine. But she didn't seem to be wary. Grinning, the warrior couldn't be any happier to have been entrusted with the responsibility of becoming a mentor. Slipping through the crowd to approach the newly-named Reedpaw, he smiled.
"Training will begin tomorrow sunhigh, so make sure to get some rest beforehand! You'll need time to adjust to your new apprenticeship, too." He spoke confidently. "I'll teach you all I know, and eventually, you'll be just as great as any other warriors." Touching noses with his brother, Hawkshriek would complete his ceremony.
