Another apprentice ceremony for her kits, and therefore another long morning spent grooming Minkkit. Poppyshine had taken special care that morning to groom Minkkit and make her look presentable. She had told Minkkit what today was, of course, and even if she hadn’t, it was probably incredibly obvious with how much she was trying to make Minkkit look perfect. She knew it didn’t matter that much. Poppyshine hadn’t had someone to groom her on the day she was named an apprentice. But she wanted this to be special.
"You'll do great," Poppyshine murmured to Minkkit before she knew it was time to get this ceremony started. Finally, she stepped out from the nursery and approached the willow branch. She had another queen watching after her other kits so they didn’t go off scampering into the camp while she was busy. Not that they would—she hoped—because they were sweet little things.
With a wide smile, she called, “Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting.”
Minkkit did her absolute best to sit still for her mom. Ever since she had seen the warrior ceremony for Grebedance, she had to look good. Had to act her best, had to prove that it was her time. Even then, she couldn't help some of the excited wiggles that had come out of her. She was just so ready! Still, she didn't complain an ounce every time her mother groomed down an unruly patch of fur. She did her best to reach up and touch her nose to her mother's before they left the nursery, and she grinned to her siblings before ultimately following her mother out.
She stayed by the entrance until she heard her mother's call, and then instantly made a beeline for a place beneath the willow branch. I'll make you proud, mumma! Her little gaze promised.
Poppyshine spotted Minkkit dart up and smiled. Her kits were growing so fast, but she was excited for them anyway. Minkkit had so much enthusiasm—that was clear from how much she’d spoken about Grebedance following her warrior ceremony. The decision regarding who Minkkit’s mentor should be was obvious.
“Minkkit,” Poppyshine announced. “You have reached your age of six moons and are ready to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Minkpaw. Your mentor shall be…” Poppyshine gazed at her kit, almost wanting to pause for extra dramatic effect—but this was an official ceremony, not a story she was telling before bed, so she continued, “Grebedance. May her knowledge of our territory be passed along to you.”
She stepped down from the willow branch and went off to the side, ready to congratulate Minkpaw and tell her what a good job she had done once she and Grebedance got acquainted as apprentice and mentor.
She saw her mother wanting to pause, the kittish urge to pout to tell her to continue ready. But she held it in, much as she behaved during Grebedance's ceremony. Speaking of Grebedance...
That was her mentor!
Pure joy beamed out of the newly-named Minkpaw. She wanted to instantly rush over and tackle the warrior into a hug, but something told her not to. She had to keep setting a good example for her siblings. Grinning up to her mother, Minkpaw trotted over to her mentor. "I got the best mentor ever! I'm so lucky to train as your apprentice!" Dedicated enthusiasm shone in her voice, and she gently touched her nose to Grebedance's once the time felt right.
She was happy for Minkkit. She waved goodbye to her sister as the she-kit raced off towards her ceremony, and silently wished her good luck before curling up beneath the nursery entrance. Minkkit seemed positively ecstatic. Sandykit doubted she’d feel the same. Having to walk out there.. with all those cats.. watching her.. If she screwed up something, the entire clan would see. She buried her head in her paws.
Poppyshine meowed the final words, solidifying her sister’s place in the apprentice den and announcing the lucky mentor. She frowned at the reminder that the two would no longer share a den. Sandykit wanted to go congratulate her favorite sister, but didn’t for fear that would be inappropriate. Besides, Minkpaw would surely talk to her soon.
She watched Minkpaw touch noses with her new mentor Grebedance. It made Sandykit consider her own future mentor. Who would she want it to be? The she-kit realized she'd like none other than her own mother to teach her. Then if she made a mistake it would just be between the two of them. She couldn't be embarrassed. But knowing Poppyshine already had apprentices of her own, she considered other options.
She didn't know very many cats, but out of the ones she did, she would prefer Stormdance or Brookstone. Stormdance seemed very calm, and quiet. She loved that. However, Sandykit doubted she could ever disappoint her big sister. That was three whole, very good options. With that security, she felt a bit of hope for her ceremony.
Sprucekit watched his sister preping for the ceromony. It felt like he would be stuck in the nursery forever but he knew to trust in the rules and that mum would promote him when he was ready. He groomed his fur down wanting to look decent for the ceromony it was orderly to do so and he considered himself to be an orderly fellow and good kti
