live it up [open]

Strong sunlight filtered in through the trees above, casting warmth down on the sandy ground of ThunderClan's camp. Unfortunately for her, Thistlemask had been finding it hard to sleep and had been awake for several hours, watching with vague interest as cats milled about and the sun rose higher in the sky. Eventually the boredom got the best of her, and rather than waiting around for something to happen, she realised as a warrior she was actually allowed to just... do things. With this she stood, shook out her fur, and made her way to the camp's exit. She hesitated for a moment, before deciding that extending an invite might be a nice way to meet more of her clanmates-- especially those as bored as she was.

"I'm going out hunting, anyone's welcome to come!"

It was a little hard for her to speak so loudly, especially when it was to no one in particular-- such an event immediately made her feel awkward, but she dared not make it obvious. Instead she paused for a moment, allowing a group to congregate, before leading the way out into their territory in search of prey.

Stormpaw had been busy that morning, although Mottlerose didn't have much time for him then, he couldn't blame her and instead practiced his different swipes and kicks on the innocent air around him. It wasn't as fun as actual practice, but it got his heart racing and his muscles sore a bit... And he had a long way to go if he were going to be the best warrior that ThunderClan had to offer.

He was hungry, but an honorable cat always waited their turn, and the kill pile was starting to look fairly empty - so when Thistlemask offered to start a hunting patrol, he was immediately jumping up to the task, literally. He couldn't see any reason that Mottlerose would object, and she was always so swamped with leading the clan. "I'll come too!" The tom yowled, catching up to them.

She couldn't deny the surprise that bloomed as some of her clanmates followed her, but the warrior kept it firmly sealed inside, taking the lead to a dense part of the forest. Greenleaf had made itself welcome, evident in the vibrancy of the tall-reaching trees and gently rustling bushes. Contentment at her home settled deep in her chest; the recent discussion with Aether- Crimsonflame- bringing her peace and allowing her to finally slip the bind to her blood-family, instead giving her the ability to focus on her clan more.

As she halted and raised her tail to indicate a pause, drawing in scents. Thistlemask silently tried to recall what others did on patrols, before turning to the cats that had followed her out. "Feel free to hunt wherever," her first comment was more directed at Beetleshade, but she had the feeling the apprentice might follow it too, so she turned to address the tom. "I assume Mottlerose has taught you hunting, but if you need anything just call out. Neither of us will be far."

She nodded to herself, following the scent and call of a magpie, watching it dart across a branch. Huffing to herself, she waited for it to flutter on down, hoping to nab it once it descended to the forest floor.

As if the stars heard her prayers, it flitted down, attention focused at the base of a tree. The calico gave it no time to retreat as she pounced, cleanly killing it and hiding it under a nearby bush.

"Oh, well – Yeah, uh..." Stormpaw blinked, having hardly the chance to speak before the two warriors had snuck off into the underbrush, leaving him seemingly alone. For a long moment, the tom stood uncertainly. Mottlerose *had* been teaching him the basics, but he didn't expect to be left alone so soon.

Suddenly, he was praying to StarClan to not disappoint. With an anxious flick of his tail, the tom let his eyes shut as he took in a deep breath, embracing the many scenes around him. Aside from his clanmates, he could make out the many fresh scents of New-Leaf trees and blossoms around him. There were some beetles scampering nearby and the distant scent of birds far up high in the trees... but oh —!

A plump mouse, a mere few fox-lengths away. A perfect target.

Stormpaw immediately shifted low to the ground and stalked forward, his belly barely brushing against the earth. Admittedly, he was heavy, a large tom that found some trouble at first balancing his paws and not announcing his presence to the world... but he found his stride. Just as his mentor taught him, he stepped on all the fresh clumps of grass to muffle his steps and crept down-wind of the creature.

It was helpless, nibbling into some seeds and left completely unawares. By the time Stormpaw was spotted, it was too late. The tom pushed all his strength into his hind legs and sprang forward with a mighty leap, catching the creature between his claws and ending its life with a swift bite to the neck.

When all was done, he couldn't help but stare at his handy work... and then laugh. Loudly. "I did it! I caught it!!"

Stormpaw's excited cry had for a moment startled the mouse she had been creeping up on, and annoyance briefly crept up in her chest, but she swallowed it down-- thinking of how at his age, despite her mostly inaudible nature, that scream was what she had felt inside at her first catch. Thistlemask cleared her throat and shook off the memory, choosing to refocus on hunting rather than exist in her head, and tried to find the scent of the mouse again.

A relieved sigh passed her lips at the rustle of a bush nearby, and she crept up on it slowly, tail hovering just barely above the ground. The calico launched in one fluid movement, paws outstretched to capture the mouse.

Unsheathed claws caught the unaware prey easily, and she dealt a quick nip to its spine, purring at another successful catch. A large majority of her adolescence was spent in the harshest Leaf-bare in memory, so a deeper appreciation of prey always ran true in the warrior. Burying her catch, she wondered how the rest of the patrol was doing- well, besides Stormpaw, as ShadowClan probably knew of his success by now- and inwardly, she was wondering when it was time to gather their haul and return home. This was an incredibly new experience for the former rogue.

Proud as he was (and he was so very proud that he could hardly contain his purr), his ears still flattened in embarrassment at one of the warriors scolding. "Right... Sorry, Eveningmoon." Stormpaw mewed sheepishly and tried to regain a bit of his dignity. He wasted little more time in burying the small creature again and finding a new direction to set off in.

One more mouse to add to the fresh-kill pile and that might have been enough to redeem himself to the point that the others wouldn't wanna tell Mottlerose what happened...

He couldn't catch the scent of rodent, but something just as enticing hit the back of his throat. Rabbit. A fat rabbit would be enough to feed two or three warriors even, right? A huge catch!

The tom immediately set into focus, his eyes narrowing in focus as he followed his instincts and crept below the undergrowth, coming up behind the creature. It had moved several leaps away from it's hole, not noticing his presence yet. Stormpaw held his breath, making the slightest crunch beneath his feet as he took a last step forward ---

It heard him, but it was too late.

The large apprentice sprang forward. By no means in StarClan's name was it a clean catch. He managed to get the creature within his paws and clung on by the ends of his claws while the rabbit kicked his chest and scratched his cheek. He hadn't imagined what a rabbit actually sounded like until then, and the shrill scream it made pierced his ears. It'd been far louder than his celebration earlier and went on for a long string of heartbeats before Stormpaw finally managed to wrestle the rabbit down and end it's life with a sharp bite above it's scruff.

When the dust settled, he had a small patch of fur missing off his shoulder, and his face still stung, but he caught it!

Stormpaw could hardly contain his laugh, but somehow he managed, heaving the creature back with the ears, stopping for his mouse, and dragging his haul back to the hunting patrol with his tail held high. "Look what I caught!" He grinned. "Do you think I could bring this to the Queen's den when we get back?"

Stormpaw hunted for a rabbit... and caught it!
