Something to Prove [OPEN Hunting]

The realization that she wasn't the fastest cat had been an almost immediate one for Brackenpaw. She supposed it made sense. Her mother had been rogue-born, and her father had been a Riverclanner, but not clanborn either. From what others had said, Brackenpaw looked much more like her father. She wasn't much built like the typical Windclan cat, and so catching hares had been a bit of s struggle, truthfully. This had led to long days spend trying to catch prey, and today looked to be another of those days as she quietly slipped through the territory searching for fresh scent. There was little snow on the ground for once, but leafbare wasn't over yet and it showed in how scarce hares continued to be. It was nearly sunhigh when Brackenpaw finally found a fresh trail, and with a flick of her tail signaling to the others on the patrol, the marbled tabby carefully tried to keep herself downwind and hidden as she approached the unsuspecting prey as it peeked out from one of the many tunnel entrances scattered over Windclan's territory.

Brackenpaw managed to get close, and sprang for the pale-furred hare. Actually making contact with it had been unexpected, and she had to wrestle awkwardly with it as the creature struggled in her grasp. Teeth sinking into its' throat cut off a squeal, and Brackenpaw grimaced. She needed to be quicker, that had probably just scared off any prey that was nearby.

Batsong walked along with the hunting patrol her thoughts were heavily distracted by lots of other things.  How would she tell Goldenstar about her... situation with Slightfrost... Were these dark forest cats ever going to leave them alone?

Her mind wondered but was quickly brought back to the present as Brackenpaw had darted out ahead of the patrol and caught a hare.  For a little bit she was worried she would loose it as it squirmed around but the apprentice saw her opportunity and took it quickly.  She gave a slight grin and nod of approval

"N-n...nicely done" she stuttered in  a hushed whisper.

To the patrols suprising luck another hare could be smelt just over the top of a moor hill nearby and she lowered herself into a crouch to avoid detection best she could as she stalked toward her target.

As she crested the top of the hill she spotted it.  It was still unaware of their precesnse somehow even after the bit of noise let off.  She grinned and slowly desceneded downt the other side of the moor hill towards it.  Her advantage kept up as the wind was favorable and she held the higher ground.

She leapt out at it !

She hit it dead on and the thing was absolutly stunned by it laying on the ground it twitched a couple times before she ended it. She thanked starclan silently for the food but she was unsure if they could even hear her now with all that had happened with the Dark forest invasion. She trotted back to her patrol hunting clanmates and held her prize proudly in her jaws happy to have something for the clan now.

"Thanks," Brackenpaw mewed, somewhat self-conscious of the praise. Batsong seemed to be even quieter and more shy than Brackenpaw herself was, though she didn't mind the silence. She knew that mom thought of the dark-furred she-cat as one of her kits, and as far as Brackenpaw knew, that meant she could only be a good cat. She'd turned to catch her own hare, and Brackenpaw hoped to find another to catch as well. It wasn't long before she spotted another, peeking out of one of the many tunnel entrances, and the marbled tabby quietly crept toward it. A shift in the wind, a faint rustle, and the hare's gaze turned... Staring directly at Brackenpaw. "Foxdung." She muttered, as the hare turned tail and fled back into the safety of the tunnels. She'd never catch it now.

Batsong watched the apprentices style it was interesting, the windclan in Brackenpaw was definitely there but hints of their father's riverclan origin shown through when they hunted as well, they lacked the speed of the average windclan cat sure... but they had made up for it in the patience that riverclan cats had when they fished by the waters edge, this allowed her to get much closer than most windclan cats did before striking... however the slower speed meant as soon as the hare took off they had given up the hunt... hmm Batsong never backed down from a challenge and even if the hare had a good head start she was up for a bit of a sprint exercise anyways.

She darted after the hair that Brackenpaw had given up on and chased it fast as she could, she figured worse case senerio she would miss so might as well try.

Batsong quickly caught up to the sneaky little critter and soon the chase was on she had cut it off from its pathway to the borrow and once they were in the open area it was only a matter of time before the lean swift she cat caught the hair and dug her claws into its hind legs dragging it down best she could. She quickly bit into its neck not letting this precious food source escape her. It went still and she again thanked starclan quietly for the food still unsure if they could even hear her. she held it up with a slight smile "hrufmm t-w-twreee is n-to - too bwad" she muttered... the stutter she had and the large fluffy hare in her mouth made it near impossible to hear what she said (hmm three is not too bad!)

She chuckled shrugging her shoulders hearing how that sounded.

Sagepaw had watched Brackenpaw and Batsong hunt from the back of the patrol, hesitant to attempt the same herself. She refused to show it, but she was nervous. She wasn't concerned about others seeing her fail, but the territory she'd longed to explore as a kit seemed daunting now, unknown horrors seemed to lie in wait to jump out at her. She'd been unfortunately gifted with the recent knowledge that those shadowy cats lurking around the camp were in fact not part of the clan, but dead cats that had somehow come back to life to terrorize the living? How was that even possible? She wasn't necessarily afraid of the beings occupying Windclan, instead she was afraid of the lurking secrets, and the realization that some things were still unknown to her. Shaking the thoughts from her mind, she focused on hunting, attempting to find some prey to bring home.

After a moment, she was able to identify a blackbird, her mouth watering at the pleasant scent. They weren't too common in Windclan territory, preferring the shade of the trees, which was part of the reason she enjoyed them so much. Their flavor was elusive, a change from the hares and rabbits that could normally be found in Windclan territory. She wondered idly what prey in other territories tasted like.

She leapt toward the bird, stealth the furthest thing from her mind as she attempted to chase down the bird. She'd seen the more experienced cats do this plenty of time, seeming to rely on speed to catch prey. Unfortunately, in her haste to catch the blackbird she neglected to pay attention to her surroundings, not noticing the furry brown creature lurking until it was too late. A heavy weight slamming into her back, sharp teeth fastening into her fur. She yowled angrily, trying to swipe her claws at the creature while simultaneously attempting to break free from the hold.

Brackenpaw had been about to search for another hare when she heard her sister's yowl. Her head snapped around, wide eyes taking in the furry beast that had decided to attach itself to Sagepaw's back. Brackenpaw launched herself forward, claws digging into the weasel's fur as she attempted to get the predator off of Sagepaw, hardly taking notice of Batsong as she did so. She wasn't exactly a fully-trained warrior, but Smallbean had started her on the basics of combat and she was better at that than hunting, at least. "Get away from her!"

Brackenpaw used Jumping Strike on weasel for -7 sp, dealing -6+3 damage.

Sagepaw heard an angry yowl and breathed an almost audible sigh of relief when the Weasel's teeth detached from her back. She leapt up as the weasel turned to it's attacker, black eyes gleaming as it debated on which to attack first.

"Oh no you don't." Sagepaw growled, lunging forward and snapping her jaws around its tail.

"Let's see how you like it." Apparently it didn't appreciate her using it's own battle moves against it, and subsequently ripped free from her grasp, giving an angry chitter and glare before dashing off across the moor.



Sagepaw used snap, dealing 6 damage and -7 sp. The weasel has fled the battle!

The weasel seemed to think better of taking on the cats and fled, and Brackenpaw's turned toward her sister, worry in her expression. She was relieved that the weasel had fled, but that relief was short-lived. "Are you alright, Sagepaw?" Swiftspirit had done her best to impart how important it was to look out for family, and Brackenpaw already knew she didn't like the sight of blood on Sagepaw's fur. "Should we go back to camp? Get that looked at before mom sees?" Swiftspirit, Brackenpaw knew, fretted over them all like a mother hen. Not that she could blame their mother, who was trying her best not to, but she didn't like to see her family worried, either.

Batsong heard the scuffle of the battle between the apprentices and the weasel. However, by the time she rushed over it seemed the apprentices had already managed to handle the situation and the weasel was far gone by then. She winced seeing the blood from Sagepaws wound... she promised Swiftspirit she would take care of them and now Sagepaw had a bad looking wound.

She rushed over to them "dghaaa ... S--sage--sagepaw. Are y-you okay?" she meowed voice stuttering over herself even more than the normal.

"lets g-get you back to the m-m..med den" she said staying close to them both.
