February 2022 Predator Hunt [CLOSED]

Bloodstar walked down the line of warriors and apprentices that were ready and willing to go on the predator patrol. He eyed them all equally before he stopped in the middle of the line. "Go to the Great Ridge. I've been smelling badgers in that area lately. I don't know why. Stay vigilant and be careful. Oh and... don't let the predators escape this time." He cracked a smile, hoping they would know he was only teasing. The family foxes was likely to turn back up again at some point, but for now, they had been scarce. Hopefully those dogs had learned their lesson as well and would not visit Skyclan again anytime soon. With that, Bloodstar dismissed the patrol and retreated back into the leader's den. He would follow them once more in the trees when they least expected it.

Hollyshine straightened as Bloodstar walked down to speak to them, whiskers twitching in excitement. The day was chilly (no surprise, there), but the sun and skies were clear: a perfect day for hunting. She piped up with seriousness — and enough enthusiasm to outshine the sun. “Understood, Bloodstar! If any get away, I’ll track them down myself!”

She said so with such certainty — in spite of the fact the warrior in question couldn’t track to save her life. (It was a wonder she could even find prey.) But those were minor details. The young calico felt determined — ready!

She scanned the rest of the patrol: dependable Briarfang, Flowerface, and another warrior (who she was sure was actually flower-named, but Hollyshine couldn’t remember). Um, daisy? And some kind of bird ending… oh! Yes! Daisyflight! That was their name. Plus the two apprentices, but they barely counted. They were young enough Hollyshine didn’t know them.

With a deep breath, the young warrior gave them all an intense stare.

If her mother were here, then of course Hollyshine would defer to her — Holly’s mother was amazing, beautiful, and fought like a lioness. Primroselight also had seasons of experience, fighting foxes and their ilk. But nope. There was no Mom, or Aunt Beechfang, or Ravenclaw. She squared her shoulders.

No, today, it seemed Hollyshine would have to lead this patrol. She raised her chin confidently; determined she could fulfill this role — even if it killed her! “All right, everyone! Let’s do this!”

And so Hollyshine set off — presumably in the right direction — with paws sinking into some freshly-fallen snow. Toward the Great Ridge! (She also trusted that if her lead wasn’t, in actually, toward the Great Ridge, Brairfang would let her know. She was dependable like that.)

Slightpaw walked behind Hollyshine silently, a bit weirded out by her eagerness. what was fun about getting your pelt ripped apart by a few smelly badgers? if only Hailffall had not forced him to attend. he hoped that he wouldn't have any scars from this. but it'll impress Batpaw if you do! a small voice teased him. Shut up.

Hailfall stood next to his apprentice, anticipation sending jitters up his spine. His first predator hunt had been frightening, but he was determined to be braver this time, especially with Slightpaw at his side. He didn't want his apprentice to get frightened if he noticed apprehension in his voice.

He nodded at Bloodstar's instructions, following the rest of the patrol towards the great ridge. However, as he walked, he offered a few words to Slightpaw. "I know you weren't excited to come, but protecting your clan is a very honorable thing. Besides, it's a good chance for you to get a taste of how warriors work together in battle. It will be important to know if you want to be a warrior yourself."

Briarthorn stood, patiently waiting, for Bloodstar to give his orders. She’d willingly signed up for the hunt, knowing that she needed to do more to provide for the Clan than she was as of late. That aside, she needed to prove she was actually worthy of remaining within the Clan at all. So, there she stoof, as Bloodstar instructed them to go to the Great Ridge. She nodded along, murmuring a gentle, ”Understood.” as Bloodstar made his way back to the den. With their orders, Briarthorn and the patrol began to make their way toward the Great Ridge. She kept to herself as they walked, focused on where she was going, as well as keeping an eye and ear out for their foes. Her maw remained parted, helping her taste the air. They’d run into the badger (or badgers) soon enough.

A cursory glance was tossed listlessly in the direct of Hollyshine, eagerness evidently coming off a bit too overbearing for the hapless Elkpaw’s selective preference. Though it was difficult to chew another’s ears for the singular crime of seeking honor in the eyes of the Clan, she couldn’t help but hope that the older molly would simply exhaust herself to the bone with the prattling chirps and faulty stares before this entire event began.

Idly shaking the heavy curve of her paws free of sodden snow, Elkpaw focused little on the sticky remnants of conversation that crept beyond her blunted ears, redirecting her apprehensive attention towards the slowly approaching landmark that was designated their attention. It was difficult to force herself to care for much for anything, in times such as these.

Dandelionflight stood with the other SkyClan cats who were going on the predator hunt. She wasn't familiar with them, but she hoped that she would get to know them eventually. She listened to Bloodstar's instructions and happily meowed, "Will do!" She followed after Hollyshine's lead towards the Great Ridge. As she bounced through the forest with the patrol, she kept watch for any signs of badgers. She didn't want them to be snuck up on by the lumbering beasts.

All was quiet in the Great Ridge for the morning. Two badgers, a mated pair, walked together among the snowy fields. Their lumbering bodies left deep trenches in the snow, not bothering at all to hide their presence. Why would they? They were on the hunt for the rodents that buried themselves under the snow... or anything that would make a reasonable meal. Their last decent meal had been almost a week ago and they were hungry.

Upon suddenly scenting a cat patrol, one of them growled loudly. The other perked it's head up and smelled the air before joining it's mate in the growling. They weren't entirely sure where the cats were, but they were on alert. The instant one showed, they were going to take their fur right off of them!

The Badgers have appeared! The patrol was lucky this time to have not been spotted first! No one in the patrol has been attacked as a result!

A horrible stench drifted through the air. Slightpaw pricked his ears in disgust. was that the scent of badgers? Did they sleep and eat their own dung? "Hey, guys, think we found them," He whispered to the rest of the patrol, his eyes narrowing at the huge creatures. he dropped into a crouch and approached. suddenly, he stepped on a twig, its loud snap echoing through the forest. mouse dung! hissing and not bothering to hide any longer, the white tom leaped and barreled one of the badgers over.

Hollyshine kept forward, briskly and alight with anticipation. This part of SkyClan, Hollyshine had found herself near on several occasions... unintentionally. (She’d been trying to find the Fallen Oak.) But it was fairly far into their territory. Her patrol followed at varying paces, and one apprentice in particular seemed to be wandering forwards... Er, Slightpaw, right?

He wasn’t doing any harm, so Hollyshine let him.

She’d begun to scent something, after a time. “He’s right,” she mewed, turning back to let everyone else know; tail curling in satisfaction. They’d found them! It wasn’t the same as foxes, but badger-stink was supposed to be heavy. Scanning for the direction, she was gesturing for the rest to follow when there was a sharp crack of a branch. And then Slightpaw lunged at something beyond the next bush.

The badgers!

Enthusiasm! I like it, Hollyshine thought with a feral grin, and leaped after him. The badgers were ugly: uglier than foxes. But they’d bleed just the same as dogs. From the corner of her eye, the larger of the two loomed — knocked aside by the slight apprentice — and Hollyshine hurled herself toward it! “Let’s get them, everyone! They certainly can’t take all of us!”

It’s shoulders were broad and easy to sink her claws into, and with a bite to its neck, she ensured it couldn’t snap for the boldest of their patrol.

Hollyshine used Leap-and-Hold on Badger 1, dealing 7 damage and costing 15 stamina. Badger 1 is pinned for two turns!

The scent of badger hit him before Slightpaw's warning, his hackles bristling. He didn't know how badgers could live with their own scent like this.

His haze narrowed on the lumbering beasts, cycling through a few half-baked plans to see which would be the best the handle such a task. However, he was able to suggest none before his apprentice lept for one of the badgers. Ok. No plans, he just had to make sure his reckless apprentice didn't lose his ears.

Hollyshine had followed Slightpaw, the first badger pinned and occupied. However, the second was still open, still capable of damage. His brows narrowed as his paws carried him forward, his white pelt lurching forward to ram into the second badger. If he could keep it down, they would have a moment to deal damage without fear of gnashing teeth.

Hailfall used Leap-and-Hold on Badger 2, costing 15 SP and dealing 8 Damage! Badger 2 is pinned for 2 Rounds!

Briarthorn’s hackles raised as the scent of putrid badgers grew nearer and nearer, and she dropped into a low crouch as the patrol made their way forward. Her head tilted inquisitively when the young apprentice in the patrol immediately leaped toward the pair of badgers, wondering why he hadn’t waited for instruction or to come up with a plan. Well… Now they had no choice but to use brute force. Once both badgers had been pinned, Briarthorn leaped forward and aimed for the badger’s belly, knowing that it’d be a weak spot for the creature.

Briarthorn used Belly Rake on Badger 1, using -25 Stamina Points. Attack unsuccessful, dealing -5 recoil damage.
