Hollypaw huffed, a bit of kit-like indignation in her tone as Orchidmask scolded her. She was just going to brush it off — at least, she was until her mother admonished her too. And... Hollypaw sighed, and decided that if Primroselight was her patrol leader, it was something spoken from experience. Not just motherly concern. (Which Hollypaw did think was a bit much sometimes!)

Maybe... her first time fighting foxes, it was better she not be by herself.

It was... fine. But when she turned, the nearest warrior cat beside her was — erk! — Newtspring! His irritating self chatting up Orchidmask, no doubt. Be by a warrior at all times, her mom had said. But Newtspring? Hollypaw would almost rather have a frog, for what protection he’d give.

She glanced behind her. But... they were all so far back, it felt, and a crowd was gathering around her mother. She looked in front of her, and then back again. Endless chatter, or being the first to spot the fox...?

They walked for a time as she considered it.

She glanced at Newtspring, who was joined by an overly-eager Dreamypaw. Well. It was chatter either way, so Hollypaw sped forward, to catch up to Orchidmask. There was still some irritation at the she-cat — but, well. “The lesser of two evils,” she murmured to herself. After all, they were doing something important.

As she kept pace with Orchidmask, she also... started to hear something. Ears pricked, raised, suddenly she was on alert. The serious warrior beside her must have heard it, too — was that what she was stalking toward? — and Hollypaw swiftly proceeded across the snow ahead of her, in a dash. If there were foxes, she’d see them first! And, then—

It wasn’t long. Maybe a few moments, if that.

But before Hollypaw even knew what was happening, it — it was as if all that is Dark Forest evil broke loose.

There was the clicking of an animal sound, sudden pounds of heavy, incoming footsteps — a screech, so not-feline but one that rung in her ears, blood-curdling. And, then— there were foxes, and Hollypaw yelped, and—

She felt like too much was happening, rapid-fast, and with a yowl of her own she dove into a nearbye bush. At least if she could see, she could do something! But then, crouched facing where they came from, she saw the foxes — running away? The young apprentice whipped around, searching for Orchidmask but then she heard... snarling. And—

It.

Was.

A.

Dog.

Huge, snarling, saliva and blood dripping from its maw and was that — Oliverain?! The brown colored mutt’s jaws closed around her and like a snake Hollypaw shot from the bush, hissing in rage. She had never laid eyes on something like this before, but it looked like a dumb, savage brute and Hollypaw would slash its eyes out!

Hollypaw used Jumping Strike on Dog 1, dealing 9 damage (6+3 first blow) and costing 7 stamina.

Orchidmask glanced out of the corner of her eye as a cat approached her, but merely turned back to the trail ahead when she noticed it was Newtspring.  She barely responded to his affirmation, nodding once without taking her eyes off of where she was going.  The young warrior wasn't going to allow herself to be distracted by the charming dappled tom, there was too much on the line today, however, chattering from the group behind her managed to reach her ears.  It was her sister and a few others, asking Primroselight for her experience, she Orchidmask found that she was kicking herself mentally for not thinking of that first.  The elder warrior was experienced, and hearing her advice on fighting predators would be helpful.  Orchidmask perked up her ears, both listening to the ensuing conversation and studying the terrain ahead.  They would surely be at Halfstone soon.

Scents reached her nose soon enough, and the colorpoint she-cat continued with more caution, icy eyes narrowing intently.  However, something seemed off; she could hear yelps of panic up ahead, the foxes.  She stopped, the instincts she felt when facing the unknown firing in her brain, but Orchidmask only had time to take a gasp to speak when chaos reigned, heralded by the barking of two enormous dogs.  Stunned, Orchidmask felt a heavy breeze blow past her as one of the dogs jumped right into the patrol - and came back out with Oliverain gripped in its jaws.  No, no no!  "Get off of her you rancid dogs!"  Face contorted by anger, Orchidmask wasted no time and leaped at the dog alongside Hollypaw, clawing her way up onto its back and trying to use her significant weight to hinder its movements.  The muscular she-cat tore at its skin and fur with fearsome claws, letting out a continuous, intimidating low growl.

Orchidmask used Leap and Hold, dealing 8 damage and costing 15 stamina.  Dog 1 is pinned for 2 turns.

Panicked yelps split the air, and Beechfang's lips curled as she recognized the scent on the wind. That wasn't just foxes. "Dogs." She'd fought a massive one with Wolfstar, her parents and Dawnhawk when the clan had sheltered in twolegplace. That had been a long time ago.

The foxes exploded in all different directions, except they weren't going after the cats. No, this was simply panicked fleeing. One of them even leaped right over the cats in an effort to get away. Unfortunately, in doing so it led the dogs directly to their patrol... And the dogs clearly thought the cats would make a better target.

In a flash, Rabbitchaser and Oliverain had been grabbed. With a snarl, Beechfang raced forward alongside Orchidmask, claws extended. "Keep that grip as long as you can!" She called out to Orchidmask. The dog couldn't attack a cat that was on its' back, and staying out of those massive jaws was a good thing. Beechfang had seen firsthand the damage dogs could do.

Beechfang used Jumping Strike on Dog 1 for -7 sp, dealing -7+3 damage.

Orchidmask didn't have much to say in response to his commentary, and Newtspring's tail twitched. She looked intent, and the tabby bit his tongue to keep from prattling on to her. This was important, after all, and Dreamypaw was quick to appear at his side. The little apprentice prattled on, excitement apparent in every word. Before Newtspring could get a word in edgewise, Dreamypaw got caught up in something else.

And then bawls of both terror and excitement erupted ahead of them.

The family of foxes they were meant to be hunting exploded from the brush, one of them leaping clear over Newtspring's head. He flattened himself to the ground, ears pinned, muscles braced to spring after them; but the thundering pawsteps that broke after the foxes froze him in place, watching as their snapping jaws snatched up both Oliverain and Rabbit-chaser.

Watching with wide eyes, Newtspring stared at the dogs in shock; then cats bolted into action around them, and he stumbled to follow suit. Oliverain and Beechfang had set their focus on the sharp-nosed dog, so Newtspring shoved himself forward to collide with the white one. He rammed gracelessly into its shoulder headfirst, reeling backwards after the impact. He felt dazed, but not too stunned to peel his lip back and snarled, "Put'er down, you mutt."

Newtspring used Headbutt on Dog 1, dealing 7 damage and costing 5 SP.

Primroselight nodded along to the different questions she was asked, answering each in turn. "There's a lot of us, so the best thing to do would be to surround and overwhelm it. Hopefully if our blows happen quickly enough after each other, the fox won't get the chance to attack us." The warrior still had small scars on the back of her neck from the Twolegplace foxes she had fought with Muddythorn which, no matter how much of a fight the desperate predators had put up, the two had worked together to scare them away. But Sparrowflight hadn't been as lucky. Part of her hoped that it would be the same foxes, still weak and starved. Primroselight wasn't normally one for revenge, and she told herself it was just so they'd be easier to fight. She couldn't help but laugh at Rabitchaser's enthusiasm, pulling her out of the past.

"We won, yes, but at times others weren't as lucky. Foxes are often fatal to a solo warrior, which is why our patrol is so large. I'm sure you've heard stories of the foxes that terrorised the recovering forest, even if many of you weren't born at the time." Her tail flicked towards Beechfang, both reminded of their loses to that particular group. She had resolutely decided not to bring up Sparrowflight on this patrol, largely as to not scare Hollypaw. The apprentice didn't need to be reminded of her lost father at a time like this. She was about to reply to Dreamypaw's question when her attention was ripped away by the bark of young foxes as they reach the halfstone. We don't need to kill them, just drive them away. She told herself. The warrior code only covered kits of fellow cats, but Primroselight refused to wage war on an entire species for the actions of few.

The bark of a dog. "Dogs! Watch out!" She yelled, voice cutting across the rest of the noise.

This was bad. Dogs tended to be less willing to back off than foxes, at least with Primroselight's experience. She had preparing, mostly emotionally, to fight a fox, and yet here she was, expectations of the rails once again. The first dog went for Oliverain, the second for Rabitchaser. The chaos and rushing of cats briefly disorientated the warrior, but she pulled herself together quickly. It was her responsibility to keep each of these cats safe.

It seemed like multiple warriors had gone for the first dog, and so instead Primroselight turned towards the second, who had left Rabitchaser stunned with the force of its shake. She leapt towards it, the dog too focussed on the warrior at its paws to notice her movement. "Rabitchaser! Try to move out of the danger zone while you recover!" She had to shout to be heard over everything else, and hoped that the warrior would be strong enough to do what she'd asked.

Oliverain looked around at the cats gathering to hear Primroselight's answer. Well, there goes that advantage. No that's selfish- this will benefit everyone. Should we really be taking such young cats? It's my job to protect them then ain't it? I will. She listened closely to the experienced warrior, taking careful note before pushing forward of the patrol. They would be at Halfstone any moment and Oliverain was eager to know what they were up against.

The strong smell of fox approached, and soon she could see the Halfstone. Crouching low she took count of the foxes pouncing about. Second thoughts danced in her head. Seeing these young foxes- this family, so unaware of the doom about to occur, it gave her stomach a feeling she didn't enjoy. Despite the moral dilemma, she quietly waited for someone's signal to attack.

Before that order could even be thought of, fear spiked through the air, spreading like smoke. Yelps of panic broke out as she watched the foxes run towards her, preventing the warrior from seeing what terrible thing had arrived. As they rushed past Oliverain she snapped at one of the pups, grasping it's scruff with a growl.

Suddenly, pain.

It scolded her neck and caused her to drop the pup- whom darted off into the snow. The ragdoll watched her paws lift off the ground. Her brain was brimming with overwhelming feelings of shock and pain. Watching blood fly triggered survival instincts. This would not be her end.

The molly trashed hard, swinging claws wildly at what held her. A dog, she assumed. Too big to be anything else. She screeched and hissed, desperate to get out. She could distantly hear the battle cries of clanmates, though her own heartbeat was the loudest.

She was thoroughly enjoying herself. The patrol was getting along well, a group forming around Primroselight as she answered all of their questions. She had caught Dreamypaw's eye, beaming at her friend as she was about to suggest they hunt together, since others were hunting as well.

Then she halted, noticing the family of foxes just as everyone else had. A thrill went through her body, ready to finally prove herself. Then she realized that, while they were large, they were still kits. Aww, they're so cute! They aren't doing any harm, are they? Do we really have to kill them?

She was about to ask this question, when all of a sudden the foxes scattered, one of them leaping right over the patrol. Letting out a squeal, she ducked even further into the grasses. She never expected that! Left disorientated, it was a shock when the dog latched onto her, shaking her by her back leg. She let out a screech of pain, fear prickling every hair in her pelt. And it didn't help that from the blur of tears and movement, she saw every cat rush to Oliverain's side.

Somebody help me! I don't want to die!

It was then that she was thrown to the side as Primroselight attacked the dog. Dazed and frightened, Rabbitchaser tried to drag herself away to safety. She needed to get a hold of herself.

Hailpaw was satisfied with Primroselight's response, taking a mental note. Overwhelm, got it. He felt more confident now that he had a plan, his ears flicking at the sound of rustling leaves and yipping. Peering through the underbrush to see, multiple orange smudges were playing with each other. Multiple foxes. That... seemed a bit much for what he signed up for. He glanced towards Primroselight, looking for some sort of instructions before a bark rung out through the trees.

His fur bristled with fear, turning wide-eyed to see two massive dogs bursting through the bushes. A terrible cry foretold the death of one fox and Hailpaw was tempted to run with the rest of the family. Yet, his paws seized, watching the dogs part to attack two in the patrol, others rushing in to save them. They were a lot bigger than he expected to be, the scent of blood starting to bloom in the wind.

He swallowed thickly as he forced himself to overcome his fright. He couldn't run and leave his clanmates here, not when they needed as many cats as they could get. He rushed forward, instinctively following his mentor to attack the dog that held Rabbitchaser in its awful maw. The most he could do is try.

He circled around to the dog's flank, rearing up on his back paws to rake into its fur with his claws. He was much too small to handle being at the toothy end of the beast, hoping staying at its rear would lend him a little more safety.

The scent of fox nearly caused Lionpaw to salvitate at the thought of getting his first kill. Fluffy tail low, maw opened wide, for the first time in a long while Lionpaw was silent. He made notice, though, that no clanmate even attempted to chatter to him. Even the other apprentice. His heart hardened at the thought and he held back a growl. An apprentice of his caliber shouldn't be excluded. Perhaps it was because he was new, but even so, talking would scare the foxes away.

As his thoughts roamed, the crashing of paws and barking headed his way. Jumping to alert, Lionpaw looked over just in time to watch Rabbitchaser get shaken like he was nothing. With a growl, the orange apprentice unsheathed his claws. His mentor, Primroselight, took the head of one of the dogs and Hailpaw took the butt. 'Ha,' he thought. 'He's scared.' With two sides taken, there was only one way to do this.

With a yowl, Lionpaw took off with strong back legs and leaped  onto the dog's back. Biting down to hold on, Lionpaw raked his claws down the dog's sides.

Lionpaw used Jumping Strike for 6 damage and 3 additional damage. Used 7 Stamina.

The dogs were not expecting the onslaught of vicious cats... Claws and teeth fell upon both dogs like rain as yowls of fury told them that their little game of chase and shake was not going to fly. The first dog whirled and snapped at the cat on his back, but he couldn't quite reach it. His yipping and growling echoed throughout the forest, surely scaring off anything that may have been nearby. Right?


The second dog had no sooner threw his catch to the ground before being piled on by other cats. It would have been a fun game... would have been... except the cats were drawing blood and actually hurting him! He bared his teeth, assuming the first cat he'd attacked had told the other cats to be vicious towards him. Well he wasn't one to back down from a fight! How dare this turn serious? He grabbed the cat in his mouth and bit down hard this time, no mercy at all.

Dog 1 is still Pinned for 1 more turn!

Hollypaw leapt back as the filthy brute reared, blood dripping from its fur and maw. She snarled, because it had Oliverain, but then her clanmates leapt upon the dog — Orchidmask grappling from its back and the others surrounding it. It gave her this rush of energy: all of them attacking together. You may look tough, but you’re no match for us. I promise!

Her bared fangs became a fierce sort of grin, and the excitement of it coursed through her veins. There’d been a flicker of fear, before — but the dog seemed hampered, now, and it wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone any longer. I’ll make sure of it As it thrashed, trying to snap at the cats on its back, Hollypaw darted forward and sank all her teeth into its leg. Trying to help bring it down!

Orchidmask held on for dear life as the dog bucked and twisted underneath her claws, digging in with all her might and biting at its strong neck.  Satisfied that the beast had turned its attention from her sister to her, she hissed and nodded towards the sound of Beechfang's voice, strengthened by the older she-cat's words.  You're no match for the might of SkyClan you dogs, might as well run away now!  Growling, she dug her claws in as far as they would go and reaching her neck around to try and bite at the vulnerable part of the dog's throat, all while still trying to use her weight to bring it to the ground.

Orchidmask used Leap and Hold, dealing 8 damage and costing 15 stamina.  Dog 1 is pinned for one more turn.
