Drumming Song [OPEN]

Bearspirit stared at the sunning rocks for what could be considered... a really long time. He had been told that this was the site of many battles at one point... but why? The Riverclan warrior easily crossed the river and stepped out of it onto land not even out of breath. Water fell from his pale golden, coffee and caramel striped pelt as if it were fleeing from him. In only a few steps most of the water had fallen off of him, leaving only scattered glistening beads all over him. He leaped onto one of the Sunning Rocks and lie down on it. It certainly was warm... but worth killing another cat over? He didn't see it. He rolled onto his back and waited, soaking up some sun rays while he did. He allowed around twenty minutes to pass before rolling back onto his belly. These are great, I get it... but would I fight another cat over this? If Ivystar told me to kill someone over these... rocks... could I do it? He didn't think he could, not in good conscience. In an attempt to clear his head, Bearspirit hopped off of the rock and headed back toward the river. Maybe catching a fish would clear his head.

He waited patiently for one to appear and aimed his claws right in front of it. He slowly, patiently, lowered his paw into the water so as not to startle it... then he shot his claws down in an attempt to swipe it and throw it on the bank.

It was easy now for him. He hooked the creature in the gill and sent it sprawling across the land. He bolted after it and pinned it in place. The last thing he wanted was for it to flop back into the water and tell it's friends. He held it there until the struggling ceased. With a sigh, he removed his paws from the scaly creature. He wasn't technically on patrol right now... would he be breaking a rule if he decided to eat this one by himself? He decided to chance it and dug in, relishing the fatty, oily meat.

Turtlefur said nothing. He stood just in the reeds, watching - he hadn’t been stalking Bearspirit! He’d simply paused to watch the other warrior spring on his prey, doing his best to avoid interfering or being a distraction. The tomcat with the interesting pelt dug into the fish after appearing to contemplate it. Well, Turtlefur understood the apprehension of being a relatively new warrior and not knowing when eating out of camp was appropriate. He gained the courage to make himself known by padding from the reeds and sitting by the river. He offered Bearspirit a soft nod and assuring smile across the river before glancing down at the clear water. The river was certainly beautiful. How could the other clans live without it? Life must be sad for them.

A brightly scaled fish caught his eye, swimming in circles and practically begging to be caught. He leaned forward with a single white paw hanging still over the surface. Quick as a flash, his paw turned into a streak of white and entered the water, then surfaced just as quickly with a speckled brown trout flicked into the air. He brought his paws down on it when it hit the ground, then sunk his teeth into its neck until the flopping stopped completely. Part of him wanted to sink into the fish as a sort of sign that he didn’t mind Bearspirit eating his own catch, but the rest of him resisted; he’d eaten before he left camp. Turtlefur ended up staring blankly at his catch.

Bearspirit had been devouring his fish in a way that could be seen as... well lacking in table manners for sure. He didn't know why he'd been so hungry lately. He was just as hungry now as he had been as an adolescent. Even with his fish nearly gone, he knew he'd have room for more. A splash caught his attention and he looked up, his mouth overflowing with pink fish meat and a guilty look on his face. Turtlefur was here now too... and after he'd caught his own fish he only stared at it.

Bearspirit took this as an opportunity to slurp his food down and swallow it quickly. Luckily there weren't any bones in that fillet. "Turtlefur, hi!" Kick. The remains of his fish went into a nearby bush. That probably wouldn't do... In a moment of mild panic, Bearspirit attempted to catch another fish by swatting his claws at the water. He hardly even checked the water before doing it.

To even his surprise, he did manage to slap a fish out of the river. He was... too good at this. "How have you been?" He asked, though a bit hurriedly as he pounced on that fish too and waited for it to suffocate out of water. Was this more or less suspicious? He didn't know, but he imagined Turtlefur would call him out. Bearspirit wasn't exactly the greatest liar... or actor. He needed to work on that.

His eyes flicked back to his Clanmate, drawn out of his daze by Bearspirit’s cheery greeting. The pretty-pelted tom snatched up another fish almost without looking. Turtlefur’s head tilted to the side, wondering how the other warrior made it look so easy, and raised his voice over the din of the river to respond. ”Good! You’re a natural! Did you fish before you came to the clan?” Was the other tom sensitive about his roots? Turtlefur hopes not. He hadn’t considered until the words had already tumbled out of his mouth. “O-or did you have a really good mentor?”

His eyes dropped in awkwardness. Turtlefur focused on the flashing scales beneath the water. They’d have a feast to bring back home if their luck held up. He held his paw over the water once more, breaking the flow of conversation for a moment to snatch another fish. His timing was excellent; he scooped another silver-scaled fish onto the bank and ended its life with a silent prayer of thanks.

"I didn't even know what a fish was before coming here, Turtlefur." He watched as the other tom scooped a fish from the water. He was skilled too, so Bearspirit wasn't entirely sure where all of the praise was coming from. "Ivystar was my mentor... I'd say she is pretty skilled." He chuckled, hoping Turtlefur wouldn't feel as if he were being made fun of.

"Who was your mentor? You're just as skilled as I am." Bearspirit debated getting another fish, but he decided against it for now. He didn't have a plan to carry back a large pile of fish across the river.

The sun beat down on his back. Turtlefur decided he didn’t want to yell across the river for much longer and tucked his fish in the reeds behind him. He then slipped into the water, kicked strongly through the swift current, and then climbed onto the other side a short distance away from Bearspirit - far enough to shake off the droplets clinging to his pelt and then walk a few paces next to the other tom. He took a seat, feeling a bit uncomfortable that he hadn’t responded yet to the other warrior’s question. ”Yeah, that makes sense. Being her apprentice must have been cool.” he meowed, laughing as well. He’d talked with Bearspirit a few times, and he was starting to like the other tom’s company. The former outsider was unlikely to look down on Turtlefur for having been a kittypet for a few seasons… not that he was going to volunteer that information. ”Stormbringer mentored me while she was still deputy. She’s tough but nice. I’ve heard she might retire soon. Stormbringer’s a good warrior, I’m not sure why she’d retire but I know she deserves the rest. I hope she enjoys her time as a warrior while she still has it.” He hoped she was proud of him as well, but just because she was retiring didn’t mean he couldn’t still spend time with her.
