Thrushnose had never been the type to wallow. Her family needed her, ThunderClan needed her—really, any reason she could pull together would do, as long as it kept her exhausted paws moving. But she wasn’t the only warrior they could lean on. The dusk patrol had assembled and set off without her, and though she could certainly take care of herself, she didn’t welcome solitude quite as much as she used to. Thus, she stood idle in the middle of camp, gaze sweeping over her Clanmates as they rested, ate, and shared tongues.

At last, her attention settled on one of the apprentices (one of Nettlestar’s, her mind prodded). Owlpaw didn’t seem busy… Maybe, hopefully, she’d jump at any sense of normalcy the way Thrushnose herself did. With a firm shake to dislodge some loose strands of her leaf-bare coat, Thrushnose drifted over. “Owlpaw, right? I was planning to do some hunting at…” She paused. The Stony Hollow had been her original destination, but she’d heard enough stories about newleaf flooding to have second thoughts. “The Owl Tree. Would you want to come along?”

Owlpaw was still as shy as she'd ever been. From the moment she'd opened her eyes, the young cat had always been wary of the forest they all lived in. Her Clanmates kept her safe as a kit, but as an apprentice, she was expected to be learning to defend the Clan from any and all threats. It made her nauseous thinking about the future battles that she would see. The life of a Kittypet, however, was far from appealing. As afraid as she was, she loved the feeling of the breeze in her fur and the taste of prey. Perhaps, someday, she could learn courage.

Right now, she was sad. She'd lost her leader and her mentor to an unfortunate fate. Selflessness, it seemed, was Nettlestar's undoing. Every day, Owlpaw wished she'd been there to do something. Anything. Instead, she was somewhere else entirely, probably being scared and selfish. Pawing aimlessly at an acorn, she jumped quickly to attention when she heard the voice of Thushnose. "Y-yeah, I'm Owlpaw," she said shyly. She knew Thushnose was one of Nettlestar's successful apprentices. It almost made her feel small. "The Owl Tree? Sure. Of course. Yes." Oh, she was too nervous, wasn't she?

Owlpaw jolted upright at Thrushnose’s approach, an understandable reaction considering how recently they’d had Asylum prowling around their camp. That she remained just as tense as Thrushnose spoke was…less understandable. Thrushnose tilted her head. Cats—well, Clanmates—usually weren’t intimidated by her; she was just a warrior, and a quiet one at that. Not that she could judge. She might have outgrown her kithood jumpiness, but there was a reason she tended to stick to the faces she knew at Gatherings. “I’m Thrushnose,” she said with a flicker of a smile. Knowing a cat was nervous was one thing; knowing how to help was very much another. “We’ll leave now, before it gets too dark.”

The path between camp and the Owl Tree was well-traveled, flattened by seasons and thousands of paws. Even a kit couldn’t get lost unless they wandered off the trail. Even so, Thrushnose glanced over her shoulder every so often to make sure Owlpaw was following. At last, the sea of trunks opened to reveal a small hill with an oak resting atop it. Carefully stepping over the water pooled at the hill’s base, Thrushnose looked back one last time, her tail waving idly. “Stay close, all right?” She tipped her muzzle toward the inky sky. “You might not be the only owl out here.”

It wasn’t much of a joke. Still, Thrushnose’s mouth twitched as she turned her gaze forward. Most of the best prey tended to hide when the sun did, but ThunderClan’s territory had plenty to offer; it was just a matter of finding it. A scent caught her, pulled her paws forward. Mouse. She flattened herself to the ground, slipping noiselessly across the mess of dirt, leaves, and twigs the way Nettlestar had taught her—and pounced, trapping the mouse under her broad paws.
