Daisybloom woke up, feeling slightly cold in the medicine den. Right now, none of the cats were really injured enough to take up temporary residence there, and Mossbloom was off training her apprentices. It was odd to be alone in such a big den, and she wished she wasn’t. But she had to be strong, and take care of the clan while her mentor was away. Sitting up, she flattened down some of her fur before going over to check the herb stocks.

After looking through, it seemed she needed to gather more before leaf-bare hit, while it was still not-freezing. Shaking a few bits of moss out of her pelt, then licking it down a bit more, she stepped outside. She could easily go by herself, but something urged her to more, to go with someone. She glanced around camp, looking for a partner. The scan over the elder’s den made her wince. Eyed’ starting to water. She blinked, trying to calm herself down. Oakheart was gone, and being sad was no use. But she missed him, a lot. She sniffed, composing herself. Now was not the time to break down.

At least looking towards the elder’s den had some fruition. She spotted a Dappleleaf, who had risen with the morning sun. Approaching the elder, she cleared her throat a bit. "Good morning, Dappleleaf. Would you, uh, like to go on a herb hunt?" she asked, her tail flicking.

Dappleleaf jumped slightly as Daisybloom approached her, but when she lifted her head to see who it was, she was pleasantly surprised. The young she-cat was sort of a friend of hers - when she had been at her lowest after loosing Doeskip, the medicine cat had offered to help her. Luckily, the elder was feeling much better now. There were times when she couldn't hold in her sadness, or when she was more happy to reminisce about her past than live in the present, but all in all, she was feeling better every day. But now with Oakheart and Harefoot both passing in the past moon, the elder's den had seen to she-cats loose their mates. She could do nothing other than sympathise with them. And Daisybloom too, for that matter. Even though she was young, she had already lost many of her siblings, and now her father.

"Yes, of course!" The mottled elder said, delighted at the idea of something to do. Her retirement brought many blessings, but it also brought an unbearable sense of boredom with it. Since Laurelkit had disappeared, she had busied herself with searching, but it had all been in vain. Even though she always avoided the medicine den, herbs alone couldn't be that bad, right? Hopefully.

Daisybloom smiled. Dappledleaf was nice to be around, having spoken a few times in the medicine den. She had lost her mate, Doeskip recently, and the she-cat knew it must be hard. Having lost almost all of her siblings, as well as her father, grief was overwhelming. She led the elder to a clearing she had hunted in before, for herbs. "If you find anything you think is a herb, just bring it over.” Already, she felt more at ease. This was one of her favorite things to do, along with sorting herbs. The smells were calming, and it was so peaceful. Even with the slight chill in the air, the forest was as nice as usual.

Her eyes landed on a white flower, and she stepped towards it, carefully harvesting it with her mouth. It was a daisy, her very namesake. The leaves were used to help with stiff joints, something that ailed many older cats. She started a little pile of herbs that she could use to keep track.

Dappleleaf was little nervous, to say the least. Helping a clanmate, she was happy to do, but this did involve herbs and medicine. It was funny how that was only just crossing her mind now. All the same, she followed Daisybloom into the territory, nose twitching in search of the pungent scent of herbs. Her plans long ago of becoming a medicine cat apprentice were far behind her now, but a few small bits of knowledge remained at the back of her mind, for better or for worse. 

She caught the scent of something leafy and walking as fast as her old paws would let her, hurried over to it. Much to her disappointment, what she found was just a common fern. She had been so eager at the idea of having something to do that she had gotten a bit carried away. But a fern.. It reminded her of her mother Fernskip. It seemed as if nothing the she-cat could do could relieve her of memories that constantly kept coming back to her. She felt a bit guilty that her daughter hadn't been the first cat to come to mind, since Dappleleaf barely remembered what her mother looked like. But she had been distancing herself slightly from her kits, as they weren't just her kits; they were Doeskip's as well. Especially Fernskip - her name alone was sometimes too much for the still grieving she-cat. Maybe she would try and rebuild her relationship with her kits, but would they forgive her? Breezeheart probably would, but with Fernskip she wasn't so sure.

Realising that she had disappeared from Daisybloom's view for quite a while, she quickly nipped the stem of the fern leaf. She doubted that it had any medicinal properties, but the medicine cat had said to bring her anything that may've been a herb. She dropped it in front of Daisybloom, the mumbled, "I don't think they do anything, but I thought I'd ask you just on case."

Daisybloom looked over as her companion offered her first finding. After a quick study of it, she shook her head. "No, I don’t think they have any use. Keep looking." she offered, trying to smile, doing so a bit awkwardly. She turned back around, looking for a clump of leaves, or some other type of plant she could harvest. Her eyes landed on a bit of color sticking up from the orange and red leaves, and walked towards it.

As she got closer, she realized it was just a trick of the light, a small green leaf. Furrowing her brow, she looked around, but was having trouble spotting anything. Herbs were getting more and more sparse.

Dappleleaf nodded as Daisybloom spoke, hearing exactly what she expected from the medicine cat. Her destroyed bonds with her family were still in her mind, but she padded away anyway, in search of more herbs. The ground dipped gently into a small, sandy pit and she followed the trail into the hollow. From the scuffs in the ground and the small tufts of fur scattered across the nearby bushed, she guessed that it may've been used for training recently. She hated the feeling of sand between her toes, but something had caught her eye.

On the edge of the hollow, a small lavender bush was growing. It was swarmed with countless bees, all trying to get the best nectar to return to their hives with. She couldn't completely remember if the flowers or stems had any healing properties, but it at least smelt nice. Very carefully, she leant into the bush and plucked a few stems with her teeth. She tried her best not to disturb the bees, as she was nowhere near fats enough to outrun them.

"Lavender?" She asked as she emerged out the hollow, her voice slightly muffles by the bundle of herbs. Their strong scent tickled her nose, but she resisted the urge to sneeze and loose them all. Hopefully this time it would be useful; she didn't want to constantly be bringing Daisybloom useless plants.

Daisybloom jumped a little bit as the elder approached, so lost in finding herbs she hadn’t heard Dappleleaf approach. Spotting the lavender, she nodded. "Perfect! We’ve been running low on lavender." she exclaimed, smiling. Looking for more herbs, she rummaged through the area right beneath a tree, trying to find something useful.

After seeing some lavender right before, it was easier for her to spot the purple flower, and grabbed a clump of it to add to her pile. She sighed softly, a smile gracing her lips. It was so nice to be out doing this, and when she was herb-hunting she easily forgot about her stress and problems.

Dappleleaf, happy that this time she'd actually found something useful, smiled as Daisybloom also discovered more lavender. She was definitely enjoying herself, much more than she would be if she were still in camp. If she had earned her rest, she didn't know what she had done to deserve the boredom that same with it. Not only was it often boring, a sense of loneliness came with it. Especially without Doeskip to share her retirement with. But maybe now at least (if she could manage it) she would repair the broken bonds with her two surviving kits, and with Pumpkin now part of the clan, she had cats to spend time with.

She padded away from the medicine cat again, her ears and eyes alert for any signs of herbs. It didn't quite provide the same thrill as normal hunting did, as it wasn't actually catching the plant that often went wrong, but it still carried a similar feeling with it. She was searching all the same. However, this time she didn't have quite as much luck. The path she was following seemed to be empty of herbs. She considered following it further, not wanting to return to Daisybloom empty-handed, but decided against it. If something bad were to happen whilst they were so far apart, it might not go too well. She knew that all medicine cats received a small amount of battle training, and that Daisybloom had once been a warrior apprentice, but that had been a long time ago. There was also no doubting that Dappleleaf was long past her prime, and couldn't move very quickly.

After weighing everything in her head, she turned and retraced her steps to join the medicine cat. "There's nothing down there," she said, a little disappointed.

Daisybloom had been ruffling through the grass, which had been growing sparser as the temperatures dropped. She felt Dappleleaf at her side, and sighed. "There’s a lot less of, er, well, everything in colder weather." She explained, a bit down-trodden. It was good that they had at least found some herbs, which was certainly better than returning empty-pawed. But she still felt a pang of disappointment, considering that she would be needing a lot of those herbs. It almost seemed like a cruel joke that when the supply was the lowest, the sicknesses spread. She glanced around, looking for something, anything she could use.

Finally, she found something. White flowers, with the same coloration of daisies. But these were different. Chamomile was it’s own plant, and one that could be useful. She grabbed a few to add to her pile. Looking towards the elder, she cleared her throat. "How about we start to wrap this up? Of course, if it’s ok with you."
