A New Adventure

The sky was just starting to lighten as Lyralei stretched, shaking her pelt out. Her eyes were bright as she unsheathed her claws for a moment before turning and heading towards where the newest Scouts had gone to sleep. She sat among them, waiting for a little while before calling out to them. "Scouts, it is time for your training." She waited until the young cats woke up before continuing. "Today, we hunt. This will not only provide us with prey, but it will also sharpen your skills for battle, and tracking. As Scouts, we are expected to hunt, gather information, and recruit more cats to join us. To that end, we focus heavily on speed and stealth, and these will be your defining traits. I expect each and every one of you to do your best, and we'll all work together to get you to where you need to be, is that understood?" Lyralei mewed, looking around at the young faces around her with a smile.

Spark was sleeping soundly in his den. It was so spacious and roomy compared to the past few moons, so he fell asleep immediately after being shown his nest. Even though Lyralei woke him up a little earlier than he wanted, the Rank One Scout still felt good as he rolled out of his nest. The ginger tom walked to where Lyralei was, and sat down near her. Looking around, he realized that he was the first cat out. That was awkward. After the other Scouts came out of their dens, Lyralei began speaking again. Spark listened to the Scout Captain, nodding his head after she was done. Hunting... I guess I will see how good at that I am. And I will definitely try my best. He really liked Asylum. It was a place that felt like a home for once, which was really nice.

Shira did not sleep at all that night.  She talked to the other cats occasionally, but her sisters and littermate were the people that really got her through the first few months.  She did not know why she felt more comfortable with the cats she knew before the Asylum.  Everything before the Asylum was a blur.  She guessed it was because her sisters were the only real family she knew anymore and her littermate was the first cat she could actually call her friend out of them all.  That was all she needed.  But now she was in a den with four other cats and felt entirely alone.

Part of the reason she could not sleep was excitement, but most of it was loneliness.  Although this was what she felt, she would never let anyone see it.  She would not tell anyone either.  It was her secret.  She did not even want to admit it to herself, but could not deny it.

Lyralei told them it was time to go and train.  She was excited for the first day of training.  She slowly rolled over and stood up.  She took her place next to Spark and waited for the others to get up.  Lyralei said that they where going hunting today and Shira perked up.  Finally, this might be something she was good at and maybe it would help to get her mind off of her loneliness.

Lyralei's eyes narrowed as only two of the young ones got up, and she glanced in to the others with a huff. Well, if they weren't going to be punctual, then they would learn the hard way, as they were left behind in their trainings. After all, pelt wards were always needed. Smiling at the two that did wake, she motioned for them to follow her before leading the way away from the camp and to a small clearing. There, she demonstrated different ways to stalk prey, from swift approaches relying on speed to slow, purposeful ones relying on stealth. Both would be useful to the young cats, and both would correlate directly to their methods as scouts. Gently and patiently correcting errors in their balance, stance, and approaches, it was nearly sunhigh when she finally deemed them ready. "I've taught you all I can in practice, let's try to catch something, shall we? I will accompany you, however, you are on your own. Whatever you catch, we will add to the pile, and you can choose what you want before the others because of your hard work. How does that sound?" She purred, leading them into a new area that had some undergrowth as well as a couple of small trees. "I look forward to seeing what you can do."

When Lyralei began going through the different ways to hunt, Spark paid attention to all of them. He was, after all, a listener first and a doer second. Any questions that he had were ironed out by practicing. The fact that hunting required a cat to not speak didn't bother Spark at all; in fact, he relished in the fact that he didn't have to speak during hunting. He didn't think that Shira would have any trouble with this either, due to the fact that she wasn't an extremely talkative cat. Perhaps it was good that the others didn't get up yet, since it gave him and Shira more time to work on their hunting abilities.

When Lyralei allowed him to try to hunt, Spark smiled. The ginger tom eventually spotted a mouse on the other side of the clearing, clearly minding its own business. Getting himself into a slow, stealthy stance, the Rank One Scout got closer and closer to the unsuspecting rodent. Before the mouse could even look up, Spark was there. Biting into the mouse's neck, he proudly showed the mouse to Lyralei. Of course, he didn't say a word to the she-cat, just like he had always been. However, he did like Lyralei, as although she was strict, it seemed like she really did care for the Scouts in training.

Shira watched Lyralei closely as she explained the hunting techniques.  She was glad that Spark did not interrupt her focus, because she knew that if he did, she might practice those new hunting skills on him.  She paid attention to every single movement the large cat did, learning as much as she could.

When Shira was given the chance to hunt, she did not hesitate to start scouting out the area looking for prey.  Soon after she watched Spark catch his mouse, she spotted a Robin perched on a small bush.  The leaves under the Robin's talons where a beautiful yellow with a orangish stem.  She slowly walked in a crouched position toward the bird and leaped up, attempting to grab the bird in her claws, causing a few of the leaves on the bush to flow down to the ground.

The bird barely noticed her as she was walking up. She snatched it with her claws, causing it to bleed from the puncture wounds. She tried to pull it down. It struggled and attempted to fly, but the small and weak bird was no match for her. She grabbed the bird in her jaws and walked it up to Lyralei, keeping her head held high and the lifeless prey in her jaws.

"Well done, both of you!" Lyralei purred, touching her nose to each of their shoulders over their healing scars. "These both are excellent additions to the fresh-kill, Eris will be very pleased. Come now, we've had a long day, and you both have worked hard. Take the rest of the afternoon to relax and continue practicing, and we'll continue tomorrow." She mewed, motioning for them to take their catches and carry them. The three headed back for camp, Lyralei leading them proudly.
