Hunting in solitude

Brighteye, alone as ever, padded across ShadowClan territory. The night was much cooler than it had been in a while, and she shivered slightly due to her thin pelt. She was heading for the Pine Grove, but planning on hunting whatever caught her attention. Solo hunts had become an almost daily occurrence for her - as long as she brought prey back to camp, who cared what she was doing when she was out? She had no apprentice to train, and when she wasn't assigned to a patrol (which she hated anyway) she usually chose to hunt alone. Ears pricked, she was a lot more wary than normal: her run-in with Twig had left her fairly injured, and even though she had mostly recovered, a large scar crossed her shoulder, so new that it would be easily ripped open again.

Once at the Pine Grove, she stopped and scented for prey. Forever plentiful as it was here, she soon scented a shrew. She carefully tracked it to where it sat in a small bed of pine needles. Dropping into a hunting crouch, she crept towards it until she was close enough to pounce. Her paws landed on it, her moons of training paying off in success. She picked it up in her jaws and placed it into one of the already made holes in the well-hunted clearing.

Brighteye used 3 SP to catch a shrew. Catch was successful!

Happy that her first attempt had been a success, she turned back to hunting again. But a nearby snake had a different idea. It silently slithered towards her, prepared to strike. In the knick of time, Brighteye twisted around. She may have been fast enough to see the snake, but not fast enough to defend herself. Tiny beady eyes glinting in the moonlight, it lashed out at her, embedding its teeth into her foreleg. She subconsciously cried out a little in pain as she jumped backwards to get away. Personally, she had never seen nor fought a snake before, but she heard that some were poisonous. However, from the lack of excruciating pain she was lead to believe that hopefully this one wasn't.

She ran back at it and leapt with her paws outstretched. The snake, however, was much to fast for her: it slipped away from where she was aiming her attack, moving faster than any cat ever could. As it steadied itself for another attack, Brighteye turned to face it, ready for anything.

The snake tried to attack her again, but Brighteye was faster this time - not entirely fast enough for her to avoid her completely, however, as its teeth still caught her shoulder. Faster. Harder. Better. She repeated in her head. It was what she told herself when ever she needed to train for some reason. Whether it was after either of her fights with Twig, after her parents died or after she lost Emberspark, each one made her strive to be better.
Again she attacked, but went for a different method this time. Instead of running at it at full-pelt, she instead stayed where she was and lashed out fiercely with an unsheathed forepaw. This time she hit it. Her change in strategy had clearly worked, and the power of her attack was something she had underestimated. One hit and the snake lay in front of her, dead. Can you eat snake? she thought. It would probably taste horrible. Still a little shocked at her easy success, she had nearly forgotten about her wounds and her shrew. 

She picked up the dead snake in her mouth, and turned in the direction of camp. Let's see what grandfather think of this, she thought. Hopefully he could pick out something that she had done right, even if it wasn't his string suit, she still hoped that it was something that was possible. Victim in mouth, she padded back into camp. Here! she thought when she spotted Icegaze, I killed a snake, how bad of a warrior can I actually be? For that moment, at least, she was content with herself. It was a feeling she didn't get often, yet when it appeared, she barely noticed it.
