Subject: Hunting time! (closed) Sun 30 Aug 2020 - 18:03
Sitting by the camp entrance, Tulipfang sat with her fluffy white and ginger tail wrapped neatly around her paws. Tonight, she would go on a hunt with some apprentice that he been assigned to her patrol, and so she waited for them to join her. Leafbare was just around the corner, which meant stocking up on freshkill was all the more important, and the molly prayed that the three of them would have a successful night of hunting.
Brightpaw knew that she was to be hunting with a warrior she didn't really know, Tulipfang, and a (kind of) friend of hers, Mistypaw. Normally, she would much prefer to hunt by herself, but she wasn't going to protest once she got told what to do. After all, she was an apprentice, and wasn't strictly speaking supposed to be out of camp by herself. It was one of the few rules she often ignored, but no-one noticed often enough for it to be a problem. At the camp entrance, there was a fluffy ginger and white she-cat, who looked as if she were waiting for someone. That's probably her, she thought.
"Hi, are you Tulipfang?" when the warrior nodded, she sat down beside her to wait for Mistypaw, "I'm Brightpaw." Again, her awkwardness was as prominent as ever as she sat beside the mollie.
Mistypaw approached the camp entrance, slightly uneasy. Hardly an apprentice for long, and he'd been assigned to a hunting patrol, and wasn't familiar with all of the cats on said hunting patrol. That unfamiliarity had his pelt prickling with awkwardness already.
A familiar white pelt caught his eye, and the lanky tom visibly relaxed as he recognized Brightpaw. At least there's one familiar face here, he thought to himself.
"Hey, Brightpaw," Mistypaw greeted the older apprentice before dark blue eyes turned to the ginger and white warrior also standing by the entrance.
"Glad you made it," Tulipfang mewed with a smile as she gave a dip of her head to the apprentice and not long after, Mistypaw arrived. "Yes, that's me," the fluffy she-cat purred before standing up. "Let's get going before all the prey gets hunting," she chuckled and began to head out of the camp entrance, knowing the apprentices wouldn't be far behind her.
Padding through the marshy grasslands, she turned back to look at the two of them. "Have you two hunted before?" she asked, curious if they had any prior knowledge on the subject.
Brightpaw followed Tulipfang across the territory, staying beside Mistypaw. Even though they were technically both apprentices, she had first met the blue-grey tom when he was still a kit. Of course, if they were to run into danger, it would be Tulipfang who would do most the protecting, but all the same, she stayed fairly near to him with her ears pricked and alert at all times. She tried to hide her sigh as Tulipfang attempted to initiate a conversation. Why can't we just walk in silence? The ginger and white mollie's next question, however, annoyed her even more. It was unfair to place blame, as they had only just met, but Brightpaw did so anyway.
"Yes, I've been an apprentice for a while, and I think I should become a warrior soon." There, it answered her question, and wasn't that rude, and it would hopefully end the conversation there.
Mistypaw followed the two she-cats out of camp, content to let the older warrior lead while he kept pace with Brightpaw. Eventually Tulipfang spoke up, and his whiskers twitched in amusement at Brightpaw's not-quite-hidden sigh. He hadn't minded the peaceful silence as they walked, but he had to answer the she-cat regardless. He thought the question was meant more for him than the older Brightpaw, at least he hoped it had been. She'd been an apprentice while he was still a kit, after all, how could she not have gone hunting since then?
"I've been hunting with Vinetail," Mistypaw's voice was quiet as he spoke, and hopefully his own answer would distract from Brightpaw's evident annoyance at the question, clearly conveyed in her own reply.
"That's good," she purred to both apprentices, glad that they'd had hunting experience before. Before long, the scent of prey drifted into the area. "I guess we should get started then," the white and ginger molly purred.
Making her way a few foxlengths away from the apprentices, she soon spotted a mouse nibbling on some leaves not too far away from her. Creeping towards the small piece of prey, Tulipfang waited a few moments, her haunches wiggling back and forth in anticipation. Just a little longer... Pouncing, the she-cat's nimble paws landed squarely onto the mouse's shoulders. With a swift bite to the neck before it could let out a squeak, she'd successfully caught a piece of prey.
Making her way back over to where she'd left the others, she dropped the mouse at her paws and licked her lips as she waited for the others to return.
Tulipfang attempted to catch a mouse and was... successful. -3 SP

Brightpaw watched Tulipfang hunt for a little before turning to search for her own prey. I can't mess this up, she thought. Spotting a frog a few paces away, she glanced back at Mistypaw. Nodding so they didn't accidentally go for the same prey, she crept towards the frog in a hunting crouch. Once close enough, she hesitated slightly. To long... Focused on her prey, she didn't hear the quiet noise slithering towards her. She may have checked Mistypaw didn't go for her prey, but the snake was a different issue. Coming from behind her, it neared, until she turned around a saw it. "Snake! Snake!" she called. Snakes were fairly rare in their territory, but she had heard nursery stories of their venom.
Brightpaw used 3 SP to catch a frog. Catch was unsuccessful and summoned a predator!
Mistypaw nodded at Tulipfang's words, and slipped off to find his own prey. He'd been creeping towards a mouse when he heard Brightpaw's panicky-sounding yowl, and his head whipped around, ears flattening and fur standing on end in alarm.
Snake. Of course, that was just their luck. Mistypaw darted silently around Brightpaw, fully intending to clamp his jaws around the snake's tail and forcibly drag it away from his friend.
"Get behind it if you can, these things move quick." He called to the she-cats. He wasn't about to back off, either, not when the thing had gone after his friend.
Mistypaw used Tail Yank on snake for -2 damage, costing -10sp. He missed.
SnakeSerpentine Movement: All attacks must be rolled, odds are misses, evens are hits. Lost if stunned. 10 / 10hp 80 / 80 sp
The snake's appearance was sudden and certainly an unwelcomed one. Like any well rounded tom, Mistypaw tried fending it off himself, but it was obvious that the snake was in a fowl mood after being stumbled upon. Ignoring the apprentice's advice, Tulipfang jumped forward and swung a paw at it, but she swung too late, and her paw went straight over it's scaly head.
Tulipfang used Front Paw Blow... missing and costing 5 stamina.

Brightpaw was a little startled when Mistypaw leaped in to save her from the snake, but his attack missed. Just like he had said, they moved faster than any cat could. Tulipfang's next attack also missed, and the snake seemed to be getting more annoyed by the minute. Fangs open wide, it bit the warrior's foreleg, before retreating quickly. I hope it's not poisonous, she thought. The snake's fangs were small, but could possibly carry a deadly venom. Trying to move as fast as the scaly predator, she lashed out with an unsheathed forepaw.
Her claws came into contact with the serpent's scaled head, injuring it. One more hit and we've won, she thought. However, it was easier said than done. It moved to quickly, even for all three cats working together. At least they had made some progress now.
Snake used Embedded Bite on Tulipfang, costing 40 SP and dealing 20 damage. Brightpaw used Front Paw Strike on Snake, costing 10 SP and dealing 6 damage. Attack succeeded!
