Willowkit's Apprentice Ceremony

Since the heat of Greenleaf had its clutches on the forest, Wolfcall had taken to holding the apprentice ceremonies later in the afternoon, when the sun had already started to sink low behind the trees. It was cool enough to make a difference, and he was thankful for the slight breeze that ruffled his fur as he leaped on to the Tallbranch. Today would be Willowkit's apprentice ceremony, and he had just the right mentor for her. The deputy's voice was loud and clear as he called out, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Tallbranch for a clan meeting!"

Willowkit's ears twitched. What was happening? Curiously, she scrambled along behind the Warriors, heading for the Tallbranch. She wasn't old enough to catch her own prey, but she reserved the right to be curious about it, right? It was just compulsory for everyone else to do so?

Squeezing to the front so she could see Wolfcall more easily, Willowkit sat and looked up at him curiously.

She had not been informed yet that it was her apprentice ceremony that day.

The pretty gray tabby pelt of Willowkit was not hard to spot as Wolfcall waited for the cats to gather below him. Once the muttering and whispering had subsided, he cleared his throat, the tip of his tail twitching ever so slightly. "Willowkit, please step forward!"

When she did so, he nodded in  approval. "Willowkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day forward, until the day you earn your warrior name, you shall be known as Willowpaw. Your mentor will be Swansong - she is brave and smart, and I trust her to teach you everything you need to know."

An apprentice? Willowkit leapt forward with enthusiasm. Excitedly, she stood before Wolfcall as he spoke, ears and tail twitching in excitement.

Swansong... Willowpaw didn’t know her very well, but if she was chosen to be her mentor, she was definitely awesome!

With a purr of excitement, Willowpaw looked around, looking for Swansong.

Swansong smiled at the new apprentice's eagerness as she padded forward, catching the little she-cat's eye when she whirled around with a friendly blink. This time, her paws weren't shaking as she reached forward and tapped noses with her new apprentice, and the flutter of nervousness was something more like a calm current of anticipation. "Hello Willowpaw! I can see you're an eager apprentice - that's good!" She tilted her head slightly, smiling down at her charge. "How does a tour of the territory and a bit of hunting practice at the crack of dawn sound to you?"

"Sounds great!" Willowpaw responded, her tail lashing, a grin on her face. She let out a soft purr of excitement. A tour and hunting! She bounced off to race around the camp in excitement.
