In The Mud [closed]

Watching Smokepaw blunder through his words and seeing the way her Clanmates acted around each other and towards each other, Redwolf couldn't help but furrow her brow as the intense negativity ran rampant throughout the little group. She hadn't been in the apprentice's den for several moons, and hadn't trained alongside 3 of the 4 apprentices here, and she was almost stunned by just how much they seemed to loathe each other.
Do all of the apprentices hate each other these days? I hope they know that Smokepaw is essentially my brother, because if they have a problem with him, they'll have a problem with me.

In the end, she said nothing aloud, opting to set her jaw and turn to hunt once the group had made its way into the marsh. Smokepaw darted away from her side in pursuit of prey, in order to escape from the consequences of accidentally muttering his thoughts aloud. With a flick of her tail, Redwolf turned away from the group and prowled through the undergrowth, the scent of mouse reaching her nose. Once she could see the rodent snuffling through the sparse undergrowth, she pounced.

The mouse was oblivious to her presence until the end, and it didn't even have time to squeal as her wide paws flattened the rodent to the ground. She gave it a sharp nip on the back of the neck, and the mouse fell still.

Redwolf attempted to catch a mouse. She was successful.

First there was Ashpaw, quietly going on about Ebonypaw - totally unfair, considering how nice Ebonypaw was. There was Ebonypaw herself, the only decent apprentice on this patrol. And then there was Smokepaw, who seemed to be a bit rejuvenated by Redwolf's kindness towards him (which seemed weird, considering he was the one being mean to him). Wasn't he in the right? Wasn't Smokepaw being the ignorant, annoying toad-brain? Emberpaw's ears slowly flattened at Smokepaw's annoying and surprisingly high-pitched voice rang out again.


His amber eyes, although already annoyed, narrowed into slits. His breathing became noticeably heavier out of anger, and he wanted to attack Smokepaw, slicing the ignorant little turd-brain into shreds, then dance upon his stupid body like he'd just become leader of all the Clans... Thankfully, he was able to restrain his anger into a lashing tail, though a fierce burning sensation was slowly building in his chest. He wasn't sure how much longer he'd be able to hold it in. His gaze lingered on Smokepaw's a while longer, amber eyes locking into green for a second, and then it faded. Emberpaw watched Smokepaw for a second longer, smirking slightly as the toad he'd been catching got away from him, then quickly turned around so no one would notice he'd been looking. Turning around deliberately slowly, Emberpaw made a faint nod to Ashpaw, Ebonypaw, and Redwolf - who, as he watched, stalked off without any sort of reprimand to Smokepaw (how was that fair?) to catch a mouse. Well, she's a better hunter than Smokepaw.

He figured he needed to impress Redwolf - well, more importantly, Ebonypaw, and show up Smokepaw - and whipped around, tasting the air and pricking his ears. If he could catch a bit of prey, he'd look much better. And if he didn't... well, nor had Smokepaw, so he wouldn't look that bad. Emberpaw finally pinpointed a large lizard. He fell into the crouch, front paws bunched underneath his stomach, hind legs tensing in the oh-so-familiar position. His hunter's eye scanned the terrain between himself and the lizard. Swampy mud, not uncommon in ShadowClan territory, but extremely hard to stalk in. He'd have to leap from pretty far away... riskier, but it was impressive.

The dark brown tabby crept forwards until he reached the edge of the mud. Forcing himself to relax, he let out a small woosh of breath and leapt. He sailed forwards with insane accuracy, as if he'd practiced leaping in that same spot a thousand timed. Nipping the lizard on the neck, Emberpaw straightened, eyes gleaming with a proud and smug light. He turned back to where Ebonypaw and Ashpaw still stood, scraping the large creature into a pile of dirt. If this success kept up, it would be an amazing day, heightened by the fact Smokepaw was so uncomfortable.

Ashpaw watched silently as the patrol dispersed to hunt. So Emberpaw and Smokepaw hated each other, and Ebonypaw is annoying, she thought, analyzing the situation. Shaking her head, she pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind. She would ponder over them later. Why did she care about them anyway?

Focusing on herself, she took a deep breath to calm down. When she was more relaxed, she padded away from the others so she wouldn't annoy them and they couldn't annoy her. Scanning her surroundings, Ashpaw dropped into the familiar hunter's crouch when she caught the scent of a mouse. She spotted it near the roots of a pine tree. After checking that the breeze was blowing in the right direction, she crept up to the unsuspecting rodent. She pounced, pinning the prey beneath her paws. With a swift bite, it was dead. She gently picked it up in her jaws and trotted back to her patrol.

Ebonypaw uncomfortably shifted away from the patrol. She had heard Ashpaw and had a glimpse of Emberpaw’s hate towards Smokepaw. It seemed like nowhere was really friendly...at all. Sighing, Ebonypaw tasted the air carefully. What she sniffed first was mouse. Ebonypaw smiled, before blending into the shadows, tracking her prey down. Pouncing, Ebonypaw trapped the mouse underneath her paw, keeping it from wriggling away. When it seemed like it couldn’t escape anymore, Ebonypaw smashed a paw onto the head of the unfortunate mouse. “Sorry, not sorry.” She whispered under her breath, before digging a hole and dropping it inside. Filling it with dirt once more, Ebonypaw turned to Smokepaw in concern. He was half blind...it made hunting slightly harder.

When Emberpaw finally shattered the contact, Smokepaw could scarcely suppress the shudder. Had their exchange really been that scalding? The tight atmosphere constricted his chest; tension robbed the air of oxygen, and, all of a sudden, exhaling rendered into a tediously mechanical exertion. Hackles prickling in palpable unease, he scoffed at Emberpaw's unfortunate success, side-eying that lizard with spiteful distaste... as if saying, 'why didn't you make more of an attempt to escape, you pitiful scrap of nothing'. What an infuriating catch. Smokepaw had promised himself to not dwell on any triumphs that the other tom experienced... but, as his mind so irritatingly wanted not to, to no avail, It's nothing but luck. If he had to deal with eyesight that's as vexingly problematic and dead as... a-as Brackenstar, life wouldn't be so willing to always let things go his way, huh? If only... One could only hope. Maybe, if Smokepaw wished hard enough, someone's eye could be slashed at. What a jovial day that'd be.

He had vaguely witnessed Redwolf's catch, too. Now that, was something he thought had been exhilarating. Smokepaw would always be in awe of the warrior, and, making mental note of her technique, squinted in a well-natured blink to acknowledge her success. Taking plodding steps backward, his gaze fluttered to Ashpaw. Smokepaw observed, with bitter rue, that her high spirits from before seemed to have splintered. It was unfair... and yet, he felt the same way. As the she-cat trudged futher from the assembly (wanting space, most likely, which he certainly respected), he tore his eyes away, flickering subconsciously to Ebonypaw. A ghost of a grin tickled his maw as she slammed her paw down onto an ill-fated mouse; wisps of 'Sorry, not sorry' traced his ears, sparking faint amusement. A unique tactic, he liked it. And then he was caught off-guard. Smokepaw blinked twice, thrice, freezing when she swivelled her focus to him. Those eyes were so stunning... radiating warm sympathy that gave sparkle to its sheen. As if lakes danced in them... as if ice shivered in her depths...


This time, his technique, wisely, possessed more thoughtfulness. He shuffled into the appropriate position, wispy bundles of fur shivering along the ground as he barely brushed over the clammy marsh. Smokepaw's left eye squinted, murk enveloping the edges of his vision as he attempted to obscure the shivering light in the distance. It was blindingly vibrant, and as he propelled forward, a irked huff buffeted from his maw. This time, he knew he was gonna be triumphant– oh, wait. That glare wasn't the moonlight. At best, he managed to land a flopping landing. The toad scrambled away clumsily on floundering limbs, and yet Smokepaw didn't seem to register it had escaped. Really, he hadn't even been aware. Azure lights stole his attention, capturing his sight with blinking radiance. He was stunned momentarily, recognising their source fleetingly... Ebonypaw..?

A small smile turned the corner of Redwolf's mouth as Smokepaw gave her a glance of approval of her easy catch, and she waved her plumed tail in return, wishing him luck. As the red warrior crouched again in order to track down her prey, a crash in the sparse undergrowth behind her told her that there was an attempt to hunt, and her gut told her that it was a miss. Regardless, she kept her eyes on the land in front of her, and soon picked up the scent of another prey item nearby.

Yet another mouse was snuffling in the sparse growth covering the ground, and Redwolf crept towards it ever so slowly, setting her extra-toed paws down carefully as to not alert the mouse to her presence. It's back was to her, and she hoped to keep it that way. When she was close enough to the mouse, she pounced. Just like before, the mouse didn't even have time to squeal as it was flattened to the ground by the red warrior, and she quickly dispatched it with a nip to the back of it's neck.

Redwolf attempted to catch a mouse. She was successful.

Emberpaw couldn't scent any prey, so he figured they'd scared all of it off in the area. Turning around, he was going to call the patrol in -- they'd probably caught enough prey -- when he saw a flash of white fur in a nearby bush. A rabbit? He hadn't thought there was any prey nearby, but maybe there was! He bounded over to the bush, crouching down, trying to keep low and quiet. He sighed as the bush rustled and the white patches of fur bounded out... only, beady eyes and striped fur, and definitely much bigger than a rabbit. No, this was a badger, probably about to kill him. Backing away slowly, the tabby apprentice called out to his patrol, "Badger!" He was sure Smokepaw would love this...

Badger was not having a good day. Food was scarce despite it being greenleaf, as it always seemed to be. He was desperate enough to go for cats, even in a group as large as this. Growling, he stomped out of a bush, beady eyes glaring at a small, dark cat. Easy enough prey. One of his front paws came flying out, landing a heavy blow on the small cat's head. The other paw made a deep gash on his back. Badger glared in delight as the cat crumpled down, and he turned his attention to the other cats who would surely come out at the commotion.

Badger used Heavy Blow on Emberpaw, dealing 25 damage and costing 20 stamina. Emberpaw is KO'ED.

Ashpaw froze, her mouse still in her jaws as the scent of the predator reached her. She turned, and as if in slow motion, she saw the blow of the badger connect with Emberpaw's head. The other apprentice crumpled, and Ashpaw realized they had to fight their way out. Surely it wouldn't be that hard, with four cats against one badger. Dropping her prey carefully to the side, noting where it landed, she unsheathed her claws. Die, Badger!" she screeched and dashed towards the striped animal. With a quick strike, Ashpaw felt her claws connect and she leaped back, her gaze fixed intently on her opponenet.
