New Kid on the Block (closed)

It had been a few days since Dawngaze's new apprentice was appointed and since the death of Dacedream. The biting pain of loss still lanced the warrior like a persistent thorn, even though she tried her hardest to bottle it all up. She was numb, unsure what kind of energy was flowing through her veins, and she was very, very angry. But she still had a duty and she would carry it out till the end. Willowpaw was her apprentice now. "Wake up, Willowpaw. We have work to do." Dawngaze meowed rather roughly, backing out of the apprentices' den and sitting by the gorse tunnel to wait for her.

Willowpaw leaped to her paws immediately. She was a rather light sleeper, and couldn’t wait to see her mentor. As she walked out of the apprentices’ den, she met Dawngaze at the gorse tunnel. “Hi! What are we going today?” Willowpaw asked curiously.

"We're going out around the territory. I'm going to teach you how to hunt so you can start providing for the clan." Dawngaze meowed simply, then nodded her head towards the tunnel to signal they were heading out.

They walked through the trees for a short while before the warrior found space good enough to practice the hunting crouch in. "Alright, let me show you what to do." Dawngaze sank into a hunting crouch with her chest low to the ground and her weight perfectly balanced. Her tail lifted slightly, swaying in the gentle breeze but under enough control not to brush against the bushes around her. "It's important to watch where you step as you stalk something. See if you can copy me, then try to track and catch something."

Willowpaw copied Dawngaze’s hunting crouch. She lifted her tail slightly, so that it wouldn’t alert the prey that she was here, and tried to keep her weight balanced. Willowpaw sniffed the air, then suddenly caught the smell of a mouse.

She watched Willowpaw expectantly, observing her form and nodding as she did it correctly. Dawngaze could tell she picked up a scent. "Well?" She whispered, crouching as well to avoid startling Willowpaw's prey. "Don't just stand around, go get it!" She urged, giving the apprentice a little nudge.

Willowpaw creeped up to the unsuspecting mouse. She waited for the moment, then pounced onto her prey, trapping it beneath her paws. The mouse wriggled and squeaked, but Willowpaw gave it a quick bite on the neck, killing it.

Dawngaze watched carefully, paying attention to Willowpaw's crouch and observing her stalk her prey. It was rusty and a little awkward, but the apprentice did well and slew the mouse. It was satisfactory, but she had her own work to do. Prey was finally plentiful and she wanted a chance to dig her claws into something that bled.

Tracking a squirrel through the undergrowth, Dawngaze slipped into her hunting crouch and approached just enough to feel good about the distance. She leaned back, pounced, and cracked the squirrel's neck with a heavy paw before burying it somewhere safe.

Willowpaw followed Dawngaze’s action and buried the mouse, hopefully a safe area. “I did it!” She purred happily, wanting to do yowl her victory to the sky.

OOC: 1-6 is a successful catch right? Just checking.

"Yes, you did. Good catch." Dawngaze admitted, glad to have something to bring back to camp. It was... nice to have the young cat with her. When she was alone, she brooded and felt bad and thought terrible things. With others, she focused on her job. "Do you want to hunt more, or are you ready to go back to camp?"

Noticing Dawngaze’s slight sadness, Willowpaw decided to spend some more time with her mentor. “Let’s hunt. I want to learn how to improve my skills!”

She wasn't expecting the energetic response. Dawngaze nodded to Willowpaw in agreement and then lifted her head to listen to a few birds chirping in the trees above. It was definitely newleaf now that the birds were back and singing. "Alright then, Willowpaw, I'll teach you how to catch a bird. You've got to be fast and you need to make sure they don't let out an alarm call and scare all the other prey away. Watch me do it first, then you try." She crouched down, then jumped to grab onto a tree trunk and claw her way up to a low branch. A bright red cardinal sat chirping on a narrow shoot. She started her approach carefully, but the bird saw her at the last minute and flitted away. "Foxdung!" Dawngaze cursed quietly, embarrassed by her mess-up. That was certainly not the way to teach apprentices.

Willowpaw tilted her head. She stifled a purr. “It’s ok. Birds can fly, us cats can’t. I think I can try it.” Willowpaw spotted a starling and decided to catch it. It seemed quite weak. Willowpaw clawed her way up silently and quickly and saw the starling on the low branch. She crept and towards the bird, and leaped. Willowpaw killed the starling with a bite at the neck, then leaped from the low branch, dropping the starling at her mentor’s feet. “Is this ok? Did I do well?”
