The fresh-kill pile was anything but low. Still, Mudpaw had seen the looks on the faces of RiverClan’s few warriors, had heard whispers about leaf-bare and the prey shortage it would bring, and it didn’t occur to her that whatever she caught now would be long gone by then. Her one-cat patrol had brought her to the Gorge, then across the little land bridge connecting its halves—she was no drypaw, but she’d seen the rocks and water at the bottom, and she didn’t particularly want to know what it felt like to hit them. Now she padded across the moor, head held as high as the grasses despite the wind blowing into her face.

Had she been thinking, she might have realized the scents around her were starkly different from those of her home. But when Mudpaw set her mind to something, she set it so thoroughly there was no room for anything else. She was searching for a river, and she would find it. As she passed yet another strange hole in the ground, she stopped to squint into it from a few fox-lengths away. Nothing. At this rate, she’d never find a fish.

You could say that Sandpaw was almost suprised. No, she was surprised. She had been exiting a tunnel, dirt clinging to her pelt, when she came face to face with another cat. Before she could think, Sandpaw lashed out and swiped the other cat across the nose, giving her enough room to bolt past. All she knew was that this was not a WindClan cat. As the other cat recoiled from her original swipe, Sandpaw shoved past and spun around, attacking the cat again. Once out of the dirty tunnels, the scent of fish was clear. It was for sure, a RiverClan intruder. [color:e269= #9966ff]"What in StarClan's name are you doing here?" she hissed. It was clear that this cat was an apprentice... like herself, unfortunately.

The thing that emerged from the tunnel didn’t immediately register as a cat. For a moment, as Mudpaw reeled back and reflected on how the breeze made the stinging of her nose that much worse, she wondered if any of the nursery stories had mentioned this. She remembered being warned about birds a lot, but this… A blow came from her other side. This time, she spun toward her opponent, her eyes narrow and flashing. Under all the dirt was something distinctly cat-shaped—distinctly WindClan, by the scent. At once, Mudpaw realized two things: first, that she was trespassing, and second, that, trespassing or not, she needed to defend herself. ”I don’t have to explain myself to you!” she hissed, bristling to the end of her tail, and pounced. Her claws dug into the older apprentice's back, more to keep herself steady than to harm the other cat; fighting someone who was neither Berrycloud nor one of her denmates was proving to be a completely different experience.

Sandpaw yowled as she felt herself getting knocked to the ground. "You're on WindClan territory! Yes you literally do!" The small, but very adult warrior squirmed feircely. Ugh! he hated being pinned! "You're lucky I'm pinned right now!" she threatened.

The WindClan cat had a point. Admitting that, however, was as good as leaving the battle then and there. ”It’s still my business! Not yours!” Mudpaw retorted kittishly, digging her claws in deeper as the other apprentice squirmed. Though she was far from kit-sized, holding down a warrior-aged cat was considerably harder than holding down one of her similarly-aged sparring partners, and she was still in training besides; her grip wouldn’t last, and she knew it. Sheathing her claws momentarily, she leapt back to ground level. She’d never appreciated how nice it was to have something solid to stand on before. Her paw shot out to swipe at the WindClanner’s nose much the way the WindClanner had swiped at hers.

Finally, the pressure sprung off her back. She huffed, spinning around and was met with claws in her face. "It is my business! I'm a WindClan cat." This apprentice was starting to annoy her. With a yowl, she launched herself onto the cat and raked her with claws. "Ha! How does it feel now?"

It was too soon to rejoice. Mudpaw let out a yelp that turned from startled to pained as the WindClanner’s claws raked across her side; it did, in fact, feel terrible, but she wouldn’t admit that either. Once she’d gotten her breath back, she choked out, ”Why were you underground, then?” Based on what she knew of them, a WindClan cat belonged in the ground about as much as a RiverClanner did in the mountains. Something long and stripy dangled in front of her. She latched her teeth around it and yanked, then promptly grimaced—the tastes of WindClan, fur, and mud did not mix well.
