With all that had happened of late, including Jaystar's death just days ago, Torrentstar had not spent much time with Redpaw. She was his daughter and his apprentice, yet he had barely been training her, and he had spent even less personal time with her. It was obviously a problem that needed to be fixed as soon as possible. Thus, one particular morning, the rising sun shone upon a small patrol at the edge of RiverClan's wetland territory. Torrentstar and Dappleshine were both accompanied by their apprentices―Redpaw and Stormpaw. Despite the early hour, the tabby leader's emotionless mask gave away no hint of exhaustion. If anything, he was as stoic and as seemingly unflappable as ever. As he prepared to address the apprentices, he first caught Dappleshine's blue gaze. He had already informed the young warrior of the plans he had for today's training session, and he was pleased to have her assisting him. He would leave her to give Stormpaw any advice necessary. "Stormpaw, Redpaw." He began, calling both apprentices' attention to him. "This is no ordinary hunting patrol. It is a chance for the two of you to demonstrate how well you have learned the basic techniques. The first one to catch three different types of prey will be the winner." The rules were simple enough... However, as he looked at the two of them, his expression briefly grew harder. "As you might expect, sabotaging one another is not allowed. The two of you are clanmates and should always behave as such. Dappleshine and I will observe your competition; if anything goes wrong, we will swiftly come to your aid." Raising one non-existent eyebrow, he finished, "I believe there are no questions?" His pale-green gaze drifted to Redpaw. He had high expectations for the young she-cat. Her diligent attitude made it clear that she intended to learn, and training her was much easier than training Wasppaw by far. Some cat looking on might have noticed the cold attitude he seemed to hold toward her, but the reality was that Torrentstar simply wanted to make sure that she would turn out strong.

Like a good soldier, Redpaw followed her dad diligently and quietly, keeping a close distance from her mentor. She didn't quite know Stormpaw or Dappleshine so she did not have an interest in talking to them. She was only here because father said so and she wanted to learn. When Torrentstar started talking, she fixed her yellow eyes on the tom, perking her ears to listen to him clearly. A competition, huh? She wasn't sure how to feel about that but the apprentice was not one to complain to her mentor's wishes. After all, her main goal was to prove everyone she was a great cat to be the daughter of the leader and his apprentice as well. Redpaw had to live to those expectations.

The coldness of the tom's face could be intimidating to some but not to her, who was used to see her dad and teacher almost every day. Actually, she liked it and had learned to imitate that cold, yet diligent attitude he always held. That's why when he asked if there was any question, the red-tailed simply nodded affirmative and padded away from the two warriors and the apprentice. The instructions were clear: three different pieces of prey. That shouldn't be hard especially is one of them fish. Fish is always easy to find. So when she reached the riverbank, she simply dove in and waited for the first shadow to appear. With a swift paw, she tossed it up and her jaws caught when it reached the ground, ending its life ina few seconds.

Stormpaw wasn't expecting to go out with her mentor, her leader, and his apprentice today. She just thought she was going to go on a hunting patrol but it turned into something bigger. A chance to make her mentor and her leader proud. Amber eyes flicked over to the other apprentice. She didn't know much about Redpaw. Only that the other apprentice seemed like a stone personality wise, but she wouldn't say that out loud.

Once Torrentstar started to speak, amber eyes flicked over to the leader as the apprentice listened intently. Three different pieces of prey? That sounds fine. She had been hunting many times before and knew how to catch many different things. As much as she wanted to beat Redpaw in this competition she held down her want to talk trash. "Three different pieces, no messing with each other. Got it." She repeated the directions casually to the two older cats before turning and making her way to the river as well. Once she was satisfied with her spot she waited for a shadow to come by before flashing her paw out into the water. Once the fish landed onto the shore the gray apprentice killed it quickly before moving on to another area.

Dappleshine's stomach had twisted with worry and anxiety when Torrentstar had approached her, asking about a patrol, and revealed his desire to have a friendly competition. She had been working hard with Stormpaw, and had full faith in her abilities, but there were still days she worried about her own shortcomings as a mentor. She hadn't been herself, understandably, since Dacepaw had left. She still worked hard though, and readily agreed, confident in Stormpaw's abilities.

She stayed quiet, merely nodding to her apprentice encouragingly as Torrentstar explained the competition. Both apprentices stated their understanding, and off they went. Meeting her adopted father's eyes as they both went for the river, she gave him a small, tight smile, one that still wasn't fully the same as it had been, before quietly stalking after the two to watch them. Both had excellent techniques for catching the fish that they scooped out of the water. She nodded in approval, waiting to see where the two went next. At this rate, they would be warriors in no time.

Redpaw moved away from the water after delivering her piece of prey to her father and quickly returned to the forest of reeds and beech trees. No fish now, which might be a little more challenging. But there was still plenty of land prey to catch here in Riverclan's lands and the red-tailed was not planning to miss one. Crouching and hiding among reeds, her nose caught the scent of a squirrel and in no time, she noticed her objective by the side of a puddle. Preparing her haunches, she flattened her ears against her skull and when the prey was distracted, the apprentice leapt forward for the catch. Her jaws close around the small animal's back and she freed it just for a second just to sunk her fang into the neck and end its life quickly. It was not a clean catch but it was a catch.

Stormpaw started to move out of the water. The gray she-cat carried her fish away and put it somewhere for safe-keeping for now. She didn't need a repeat of an eagle coming to take her prey. She knew she couldn't fish again so her eyes started scanning for another prey to catch. Her mouth open as she scented for anything. As soon as she caught a scent of a frog she followed it back to the muddy bank of the river a little distance from where she was. Crouching low, Stormpaw crept closer and closer until she was close enough she could pounce on it. As soon as she leapt the Frog noticed her and jumped away cause her to fall into the mud. The now gray and brown she-cat looked up as soon as she heard a growl. Her ears falling back, amber eyes going wide with fear. A dog.... How did she not see it before? She stood there, fur fluffing up as she tried to keep out of reach. "Torrentstar! Dappleshine!" She called fear in her voice as she back up trying to avoid the creature.

The brown-furred apprentice was soon to come back with her recent prize when she heard the distressed voice of her rival. Her ears perked and quickly, she buried her lucky catch and rushed to the place where her voice was heard. And what she found, left her paralyzed. Never in her life, she had seen such a large with those scary big fangs. Was that... a fox? A dog? She couldn't tell for sure since she hadn't met any of those until today. Redpaw gulped, a second away from running away from danger but then her yellow eyes were fixed on Stormpaw, on how scared the young she-cat was too. What if Stormpaw was in her place now? Would she help her in such a situation? Redpaw couldn't tell for sure but one thing was clear to her: she would want to be saved and that was what she was going to do for Stormpaw. Or at least... try to help her. That what was a warrior was meant to do.

Even with fear filling her chest, the small apprentice ran at high speed and tried to tackle the best to one side, hoping it would distract it enough from her fellow clanmate. "Go and get my dad!" She yowled, her fur bristled, facing those mean eyes that were desiring blood.

"Torrentstar! Dappleshine!" The sound of her apprentice's voice, shrill with fear, brought Dappleshine sprinting out of where the two had been watching. Her attention had been focused on Redpaw, and she cursed herself for not paying more attention. Bursting through the reeds, she didn't hesitate to slam into the Dog head first, sending it tumbling as she stood and shielded the apprentices with her own body, standing between them and the dog hissing fiercely.

Dappleshine used Run-and-Tackle dealing 13 damage. -5 SP (protecting an apprentice).

One moment, everything had been fine. The two apprentices had swiftly cleared the first part of the competition. As expected, they had both decided to fish. They were both naturals, as evidenced by the ease with which they scooped their prey from the water's grasp. When they moved on the second stage, the two split up. Leaving Stormpaw to her own mentor, Torrentstar followed Redpaw away from the river. He kept close enough to watch her, but far enough that his presence would not interfere with her performance. The second time, Redpaw's catch was a little messier. It was clear that catching land prey was not her strong point. In some way, it was to be expected; they were RiverClan cats after all. But Torrentstar was not content with settling there. A cat could improve at almost anything with enough practice. His sharp eyes analyzed her technique. In approaching the squirrel, she did well; to the very end, the critter did not catch sight or scent after all. It was her pounce that would need some work... Just as the large tabby was considering the best way to teach his apprentice, a high-pitched shriek cut into the air.

One moment, everything had been fine. The next, a dog was bearing down on both Redpaw and Stormpaw. Torrentstar took in the scene at a glance. What was such a beast doing here? It did not matter. Even as the thought was racing through his head, his paws were already moving as he charged forward. He had to reach them, before any one of them was hurt. Move! He urged himself, furiously. He should never have let his guard down. Fortunately, Dappleshine reached the scene before he did. The young warrior immediately shoved the dog back, driving herself protectively between predators and apprentices. Torrentstar breathed a sigh of relief inwardly, but there was no time to dwell upon it. Dappleshine was just as important to him as the apprentices were. With a fierce hiss, he descended upon the dog with unsheathed claws.

Torrentstar used Rear Up to Slash, dealing 20 damage and costing 10 stamina (protecting apprentices).

Relief flooded the apprentice at the sight of the other three cats showing up to help her out with the Dog, but it still didn't help that the dog had strong teeth that could hurt either of the apprentices real badly, but she still had to try. She wasn't going to sit back and cower while her mentor and leader and fellow apprentice fought the dog. The apprentice charged forward sliding under the dog once up on the other side she gripped the dogs tail in her teeth and yanked hard.

Stormpaw used Tail Yank on the Dog, dealing 2 damage, -10 Sp. The Dog is Stunned for one turn.

The dog growled as it got attacked from all sides by more than one cat. Its eyes going back and forth between all the different cats but its eyes followed the first cat that it wanted to attack. It watched as it ran under neath it and pulled it's tail. The dog let out a howl as the shock of it's tail being pulled shocked it.

The dog is no longer stunned.

The red-tailed she-cat felt a little safer when both Dappleshine and Torrentstar showed to battle. The paralyzing fear that was about to make her flee the battle was not so bad now and actually... she felt strong adrenaline and urge of fighting now that she was by her father's side. With this new-found boldness, the small apprentice snuck under the predator's body and swiftly, she slashed the exposed belly before sneaking as fast as she arrived. Redpaw soon rushed to Torrentstar's side, her fur bristled and claws unsheathed ready to counterattack if it was necessary.
Redpaw used Belly Rake, dealing 7 damage and costing 10 stamina.
