Dewshine watched Mosspaw tease her with an amused look in her eyes. Though she blushed and looked away when he called her an amazing warrior. She didn't think she was that good, but didn't stop to correct him as he plunged off after new prey.

His yowl made her race towards his voice, only to pause at quiet bewilderment at the last words. Did no one teach the little tom how to kill? The thought that Silverfang could be so neglectful made her pelt itch as she padded swiftly up to him.
"Lean down, and bite it's neck." She explained, then prodded the spot very carefully with one paw. Not enough to move it, but to demonstrate where it was on a creature like this. "Make sure to thank StarClan for it's life after it's been killed." She meowed calmly, then stepped back to allow the apprentice to make the actual kill on his own, though ready to catch it if the frog managed to wiggle free.

"Bite it? Like -- you mean -- bite it?" Mosspaw mewed, feeling nervous even as Dewshine calmly instructed him. He knew what it meant, to eat prey -- of course they had to kill them -- but in the moment, struggling in his grip, the frog felt so... alive. The little black tom felt like a bully, forcing the thing to be still underneath his weight, just waiting to...

What did you think it'd feel like? he chastised himself, just hearing Silverfang's sharp bark if she'd seen Mosspaw then. They needed to feed the clan, of course! He couldn't hesitate!

"I'm sorry..." the tom whispered beneath his breath, leaning down where Dewshine's paw had lain. And before he could think more on how the frog moved, almost like his denmates wriggling beneath him in play, he snapped his jaws quickly around its neck.

It was like eating fresh-kill -- the way his fangs sunk in through slimy flesh and hit bone, cracking it with a snap. And almost immediately, Mosspaw felt the little limbs beneath his paws still. Lifeless.

The tom wasn't sure what to feel after, licking the familiar taste from his lips. It had been different when Mosspaw had lunged for the dog -- the beast had been hurting Silverfang, and Spotfur, and Jaystream... And in the moment, Mosspaw had hardly felt any hesitation as his teeth sunk through filthy fur. Mosspaw ate frogs and fish all the time, too...

He had been staring at where his fangs had met the frog's neck for so long, he'd forgotten. What did Dewshine say? To thank Starclan?

Well, with his skills... it really must have been Starclan that did it. But Mosspaw felt Dewshine was talking about something else.

"Thank you..."

Taking a deep breath, he shook himself -- trying to shake off the lingering unease. It wasn't gone, but when he thought about it -- how he'd finally caught something to provide for his clan -- it did brighten his spirits. "I did it, Dewshine. I... I did it! Silverfang would be proud, wouldn't she?"

But would she? Of course she would, though! Mosspaw had never been able to before -- even if he hesitated... The little black tom's tail flicked. "Is it always so... hard, though?"

He wasn't talking about the stalking, or the tracking, or anything about the hunt itself.
