Jaypaw's Assessment [closed]

The Leafbare air was heavy with a damp coolness that promised snowfall later in the day, despite the fact that there were hardly any clouds visible in the bleak sky. Even if the damp weather was seemed somewhat miserable in comparison to the usual chilly dryness that most anticipated during Leafbare, they still had to go on with their duties as normal. Shaking out her short fur, Brindlewhisker's face screwed up ever-so-slightly in response to the bitter chill that nipped at her exposed and defenseless face and ears, doing her best to remain somewhat warm as she continued to wait, occasionally wincing as her paws came into contact with a particularly damp patch of brittle earth.

Wrapping her tail neatly around her paws, Brindlewhisker exhaled a smokey breath as she waited for Jaypaw to approach. Ever since the privilege of overseeing her son's training had been bestowed upon her, she had known it wouldn't be long before she was faced with the duty of completing his training- and with each passing sunrise, they seemed to be drawing closer and closer to their intended goal.

Jaypaw walked out of the apprentices' den and towards his mother. He had an inkling about what was on today's agenda.

"Good morning Jaypaw." Brindlewhisker chirped, chin rising at the sight of her son making his way towards her, eventually reaching out to brush her cheek against his own once he was within reach. It was strange that it seemed like only a few sunrises ago her son was nothing more than a mewling scrap of fur, but now he was on the verge of becoming a Warrior. With each kit she reared, they seemed to grow up faster than the one before it. "I trust that you've caught on to what today's task will be about?" She questioned, gazing at him with expectant eyes.

Jaypaw had grown to accept his mother's affection without much fuss, he realized it drew more attention when he did complain about it. He silently nodded, at Brindlewhisker's question. The gray tom knew he was prepared for this hunt, he knew that his mother had trained him well enough to succeed at this test and as a warrior.

"Excellent! Then I suppose we should get going!" Brindlewhisker mewed, a slight hum edging her words, her powerful shoulders rolling softly as she rose to her paws. Feeling another slight breeze cut through the camp, the Deputy flicked her tail as a sign that Jaypaw should follow suit and took off towards the gorse barrier. Once the pair slipped out of the safety of the camp, the weather seemed marginally less pleasant, but they continued deeper into the snow-dusted moorland with little delay. "I know that you know the basics of every assessment, but it's always helpful to review the details. As standard with every assessment, you'll have until sundown to complete the tasks given to you- it should be more than enough time, so there's no need for you to rush or feel pressured." She eventually began, whiskers twitching sightly as she caught another damp gust of wind, her gaze occasionally flicking back to Jaypaw as she spoke. "To complete this assessment, you'll need to catch three pieces of prey, although what you choose to hunt can be up to you. I'll be monitoring your progress throughout the assessment and I'll also be nearby in case you need my help." The Deputy finished, halting several paces ahead of Jaypaw, her claws pricking at the brittle heather beneath her paws.

"This is as good of a starting place as any," Brindlewhisker began, "So now we can officially declare this assessment underway. Good luck Jaypaw, and remember that I'll be observing you throughout the day." Dipping her head slightly, the Deputy quickly picked her way in the opposite direction of her son, her brindled fur soon vanishing among the wilted heather and grasses.

Jaypaw listened to the explanation from Brindlewhisker and nodded when she finished.  "I don't need luck when I have skills mother."  The apprentice laughingly mewed over his shoulder to the deputy before setting off.

Jaypaw soon spotted a rabbit trying to cover itself with a withered piece of heather.  The gray cat stalked the unsuspecting creature, and took off towards it. His claws sunk into the small shoulders of the rabbit and Jaypaw quickly killed it, before placing in hiding until he could come back and pick it up.

The apprentice spotted a nested bird on the ground.  To the untrained eye it would have blended in with the wispy and dried grass, but Brindlewhisker had taught him to be very conscientious about viewing his surroundings.  Jaypaw laid low to the ground and inched his way towards the nest until he got close enough to pounce. The pounce was precise, the bird was in his grips and the eggs under paw were crushed. Jaypaw added the bird to his pile and moved on to his last piece of prey.

Jaypaw began to look for his last piece of prey, and luckily the young tom spotted a hare.  The critter was slightly larger than his first piece of prey, but he knew what he was capable of.  He set off to take the prey down. He was a WindClanner after all and speed was on his side, but it was on the side of the hare as well. The only advantage Jaypaw was that he began running a heartbeat faster than the hare did, which allowed his to bring down the animal.

The apprentice looked around for the deputy, and waited for her to reveal herself. Jaypaw sat with the hare at his paws.

Carefully hidden from sight throughout the assessment, Brindlewhisker closely monitored Jaypaw throughout each of his hunting endeavors. Feeling her gaze narrow slightly with each of his catches, the Deputy let out a relieved sigh as the young tom skillfully brought down each of his intended prey. The Clan would eat well tonight. Emerging from a prickly patch of dead heather, she quickly strode towards Jaypaw, a pleased expression wearing heavily upon her features as she gazed at her son.

"Well done! Not a single piece of prey missed- that's quite an accomplishment, even for the best of hunters." Brindlewhisker praised, stopping a short tail-length away from Jaypaw, "We should gather up what you caught and head back to camp. I need to report to Ashstar about your assessment."
