The Poppy's Assessment [CLOSED]

Froststone entered the apprentice's den once again, now searching for the ginger and white apprentice. Poppypaw was a fast learner, he was sure he was ready to be a warrior. He just needed to test him. "Poppypaw, come meet me at the camp entrance please." He then receded from the den and sat near the entrance to the camp. Poppypaw was ready and would be a great warrior when his time had come.

Poppypaw's head lifted from where he was resting next to Orchidpaw, who was grooming his forehead. With a soft, sleepy chirp of farewell to his brother and an affectionate parting nuzzle, he stood up from his nest and padded out of the den, then bounded across the camp to meet his mentor. His amber eyes glistened brightly with anticipation. "Yes, Froststone? What do you need me for?"

Froststone smiled as he saw his apprentice gleefully bounding towards him. "Today will be your assessment. Your instructions are that you must catch one mouse, one frog or toad, one lizard, and one piece of prey of your choice. I'll be following you to ensure that you're alright, you just won't see me. Good luck, you may begin." Froststone would enjoy watching his apprentice, he was an excellent hunter. He'd do just fine. Poppypaw would become an excellent warrior along with Orchidpaw, he was sure of it.

Poppypaw's already eager grin grew even wider with elated excitement. "Wowie! This is going to be fun! You just wait and see, Froststone, I'm going to catch all that prey before sunhigh! ...Er, before we go back home!" With an excited swish of his tail, he began setting out in search for his first prey.

Nose up to the air and lips parted, he scented the murky marshes for any little creatures, and immediately the warm scent of mouse tickled the roof of his mouth. He crouched down into the basic hunter's crouch and searched for the little rodent, finding it among a small clump of mushrooms, and began to stalk towards it slowly and carefully. He pounced when he was close enough, trapping the mouse's tail underneath a paw when he had slipped on pine litter during his jump. Fearing the mouse just may still pull its tail free and escape, he bent down quickly and nipped the back of its neck, killing it instantly. With a shaky huff and a quick prayer to StarClan, he buried it and resumed his search.

The next prey Poppypaw encountered was a lizard laying on a rock near the marshes trying to find any kind of warmth under the moon-covered sun up above. Lowering himself once again, the ginger-and-white tom stalked towards it before pouncing, taking care not to slip this time. His paw pinned the lizard to the rock with accuracy, the impact of heavy paw crushing it against solid rock killing it. Burying it, he continued his hunt, his tail waving high with happiness and confidence.

The next creature was one he spotted just before scenting it: a frog resting on a tree stump a few tail-lengths away from shore in the marshes. Remembering where to place his paws when wading through the thick muddy water, Poppypaw silently slipped in and crept up on the green amphibian from behind. He slipped up onto a nearby thick tree branch and pounced onto the stump, pinning the frog down and bending down to kill it with a sharp nip to the back of its neck. He carried it back to shore and buried it under some mud and resumed his search with a wide, excited grin. He just needed to catch one more prey of his choice and he would pass his assessment flawlessly! He couldn't wait to tell Orchidpaw when he got back to camp, or to see the proud look on Froststone's face when he sees just how cool an apprentice he has!

Poppypaw stopped at the sound of skittering underneath some nearby fallen pine needles, and he turned to spot a shrew nuzzling between the green and brown needles in search of food. Trying to quell the excited heavy thumping of his heart, he crouched and stalked towards it. Unfortunately for him, his own excitement proved to be his downfall; the shrew was able to hear his heartbeat, and it dove into a nearby burrow before he could get any closer.

Huffing with disappointment, Poppypaw stood back up, his tail-tip flicking. Then, he shrugged and continued his search. At least he was able to catch three other pieces of fresh-kill without fail. He would just have to calm himself down before trying to hunt another creature.

The ginger-and-white tom's eyes widened in surprise when he suddenly encountered a squirrel while venturing closer to the Thunderpath. What a rare find! If he were able to catch this squirrel, that would definitely make up for the shrew he lost! He crouched down and stalked towards it. It spotted him quickly when he accidentally lost his balance and stepped down rather heavily, and it bolted right over the border. He gave a desperate, frustrated huff and stalked away from the Thunderpath. Perhaps he would have to stick to prey he knew how to hunt best if he was going to pass this assessment.

As luck would have it, he encountered yet another mouse scurrying near a pine tree for food. He repeated his crouch and stalk technique that was rather quickly starting to become second nature for him at this rate. When he was close enough, he pounced... and just before he landed on it a large figure swooped in from the sky and snatched the rodent right up from under his paws!

He looked up in alarm, his fur bushing out, as he saw a giant bird he had never encountered before turning sharply in the air before diving down after him, one set of talons clutching onto the still-squirming mouse as the other stretched out its sharp claws to slash into Poppypaw's haunches when he quickly dodged.

Poppypaw yowled in pain and collapsed to the ground, staring up in horror at the abnormally large bird as it dived down towards it again.

Owl used Talon Strike on Poppypaw, dealing 10 damage and costing 10 stamina.
