A Young Hunting Patrol (CLOSED)

Heatherpetal waited patiently by the entrance of the camp. The morning hunting patrols had been organized, and Heatherpetal had been asked to lead a small patrol and take Wisteriapaw and Robinpaw with her. She didn't particularly know either of them personally, so being able to hunt with them would help her get to know them better. The best part was she was hardly shy about officially meeting them. She supposed she had no trouble being around much younger cats or kits.

Why had she been specifically asked for? Wisteriapaw quietly padded out of the apprentices' den with her normal anxious expression on her face. The only good thing about this was that at least some cat knew she existed. Other than that, Wisteriapaw could find nothing else positive. Robinpaw and Heatherpetal would probably want to talk, and it would be fairly rude if the shy apprentice didn't respond. The she-cat sighed. She was growing up and getting older, but that also meant that she had to become more mature. Talking to cats was a normal part of life. Wisteriapaw padded over to the warrior and attempted to put on a smile, but her tiny attempt at a grin faltered immediately as she silently looked down at her paws. If Heatherpetal listened closely, then maybe she would be able to hear the quick and barely audible 'hi' that the apprentice managed to let out.

Heatherpetal knew perfectly well how it felt to be extremely shy and withdrawn from socializing. She wanted to make sure the apprentice felt as comfortable around her as possible. She purred her greeting to Wisteriapaw in response, smiling sweetly at her.

Robinpaw walked over to the patrol with a spring in her step. She had finally been let out of the medicine den after that awful RiverClan tom attacked her while she was on a solo patrol. She had been told her wounds had healed enough for her to get out, and the first thing she did was go on a patrol. Brimming with excitement, the she-cat walked up to Heatherpetal and Wisteriapaw, ignoring her scars from the attack and grinning at them both. ”Hello! Sorry if I’m late.” She greeted them.

"You're just fine, Robinpaw. I suppose if you both are ready, we can head out now." Heatherpetal led the way through the gorse tunnel and up the ravine into ThunderClan territory. She steered as far as she could away from Sunningrocks; the last thing she wanted to do was meet up with any RiverClan cats and get into a skirmish. She stopped by the Great Sycamore and turned back to the apprentices. "I know I'm not either of your mentors, and I shouldn't really be giving you any orders, but I still think it would be a good idea for you two to stick close to me while you hunt. While you two must be exceptional fighters, no apprentice can take on a fox or a raccoon all by themselves if they encounter one. If you run into any predators, we'll all work together to drive it away."

With a smile and a quick, "Good luck!", Heatherpetal padded off to begin the search for prey. Not too long after she spotted a squirrel nibbling a nut it found under the snow next to a tree. If she messed up even the slightest bit, that squirrel will be as good as gone. She began stalking closer and closer to it, and once she was close enough she pounced. Thankfully, she landed right on top of it and nipped it sharply behind its neck, killing it. She buried it in the snow to keep it hidden from predators and resumed searching for more prey.

At least the two cats on the patrol weren't rude. Wisteriapaw stayed silent as she nodded politely at Robinpaw before following Heatherpetal out of camp. Sticking close to the warrior seemed to be the smartest thing to do. While there was a possibility that they could run into a predator, Wisteriapaw would hate it if yhere was an encounter. The apprentice lifted her nose and sniffed the air. The scent of a squirrel flooded her nose, and she looked over in the direction that it was coming from. Stalking forwards like she had been taught, the she-cat watched as the squirrel poked around at the fluffy snow. After waiting for the right time to jump, the she-cat leaped into the air. She landed on top of the squirrel and trapped it under her paws. Before it could escape, she snapped the neck of the creature. In the she-cat's eyes was a silent apology towards the dead squirrel. She buried her prey in the snow before moving on.

Robinpaw nodded at Heatherpetal's instructions. She didn't want any battles to break out. Sniffing the air, she scented a mouse. She followed the scent and found it, a small grey one. It was pitifully thin, but it was better than nothing. She sprang forwards with her claws outstretched. The apprentice caught the creature and ended its life with a swift bite to the neck, silently thanking StarClan.

Heatherpetal made sure to always keep Wisteriapaw and Robinpaw within earshot as she ventured deeper into the forest. She softly gasped when she spotted the bobbing fluffy tail of a white rabbit. Rabbit was her absolute favorite prey. Licking her lips, trying to quell the rumbling of her stomach, she crept towards it. Unfortunately, the rabbit must have heard her creeping up from behind, and it dashed off into the forest. Even though she tried to pursue it, she didn't want to stray too far from the apprentices. Growling in irritation, she turned back to try catching something else.

(OOC: If all three of them continue making successful catches -- even though Heatherpetal didn't, haha -- we can wrap this patrol up in two more hunting posts each. :3)

Wisteriapaw had spotted a bird near the base of a tree. She had instinctively crouched down low and lifted her tail a bit so that it glided over the snow without making a single sound. Lightly using her paws to move her towards the creature, the ginger-and-white apprentice stayed silent and kept her breathing shallow so that the bird wouldn't be able to hear her. The little black rook lifted its wings, and Wisteriapaw thought that it would fly away before she could catch it, so she sprang forwards so that she could attempt to catch it. The rook let out a squawk as the apprentice landed squarely on top of it. She lowered her head and firmly snapped its neck. The she-cat couldn't help but cringe a bit at the small snapping sound that she heard. Thanking StarClan silently for her catch, the shy apprentice buried the bird underneath the snow and glanced around to see if she could find some more. She wouldn't be able to carry all of her prey back to camp if she kept it up.

Robinpaw lifted her head, mouth open slightly to draw in the scents of the forest. The ground felt good under her paws, a pleasant change from the mossy medicine den. The scent of bird hit her, and the apprentice's tail flicked happily. Her favourite prey was nearby! Songbirds were especially easy to catch. She moved slowly, one paw in front of the other, as she tracked the smell. And then, she rounded a tree trunk, and saw it. A small brown bird, with a distinctive red chest, was pecking at the frozen ground. A robin. Robinpaw grinned, happy to find her namesake, as she crept closer towards the unsuspecting creature. She leaped forwards and neatly trapped it's wings under her paws on either side, quickly snapping it's spine with a bite to the neck. She lifted up her prey. It was small, but should make a good meal for the kits, at least. She kicked some snow over it so no predators would take it and continued her search for prey.
