Hunting With Snakes [Closed Hunting Patrol]

Blizzardshine padded through the trees, smiling as she reached her favorite hunting spot with her apprentice. It was finally time to teach him how to hunt, and she sincerely couldn’t wait. It was almost like if she was the apprentice about to receive the training instead of the other way around “Very well, we are here. Are you ready to start?” She meowed happily before turning to look at her apprentice.

Snakepaw followed, her tail lashing excitedly, even though she tried to control it. And yet, a small grin was plastered across her face at the thought of hunting.
"Indeed I am, mentor." she said,nodding solemnly.

OOC: Ok, time to go out of character again, I guess.

So, the first thing you need to check is the hunting system spreadsheet (Link to the Hunting System). There you’ll find a list of all the kinds of prey that exist on the site as well as the chances of catching them.

Once you decide to start the hunting you must pick one of the kinds of prey found in the site. Then follow the steps I gave to you on the battling system to pick a dice, though this time you must pick the “Hunting Dice”. According to the number rolled in the dice, you will catch the prey or not. There are two exceptions to this rule though:

-0: a cero in the spreadsheet means that the territory doesn’t have the kind of prey you’re looking for, and also keep in mind that there a zone-based prey. For example, you are a ThunderCan cat and for some reason want to catch a fish. You can’t catch a fish in the Snakerocks for obvious reasons, but if you’re in a place near water lie the Sunningrocks you may catch one.
-10: A ten means that while looking for your prey, you stumbled into a predator and a battle is started automatically. I won’t go into detail for now, and unless one of us rolls a 10 I’ll wait to explain this to you until you understand the rest of the system.


I’ll give you an example of how the hunting system is used. Since this is TC's territory we'll use squirrels, which are the easiest to catch in here. Remember to ask if you have any questions.

Blizzardshine smiled and nodded “Just call me Blizzardshine, no need to be so formal” She purred before looking around “First you need to find your prey, that’s where you use your nose, ears and eyes. Then you need to get close to it and wait for the perfect opportunity to catch it. I’ll try to find the nearest piece of prey and show you how it is done”.

Once she was done speaking she sniffed the air, the scent of squirrel making her ears perk up and her eyes follow the source of such aroma. She approached carefully, dropping into a hunter’s crouch when she was getting too close to not be spotted otherwise. Waiting for the perfect time, she pounced on its direction, claws ready to trap the rodent and fangs ready to give the fatal blow. The small creature had no time to react and its death was quick and painless.


(As you can see I rolled a 4. For a TC cat in their territory, the catch rate of a squirrel falls between 1 and 8. 4 is within this range, what means my cat successfully caught it)

Snakepaw nodded, slightly embarrassed. "Sorry, old habits die hard." she said, chuckling slightly. She focused on listening to her mentor, ears twitching slightly with every word as she tried to pay the utmost attention. Watching in awe as Blizzardshine caught the squirrel, she nodded with determination. "Alright...my turn."

Letting in air through her mouth, she tasted the air. Soon enough, she could scent another squirrel, possibly the first one's denmate. With a satisfied grunt, she dropped into her best hunter's crouch and crept closer. She kept her paws as light as she could, pouncing on the unsuspecting creature, killing it with a swift bite to the neck.

OOC: Ok, now we’re moving on to something a bit more interesting…battle encounters. This is the reason battle training must always be done before Hunting Training.

These are triggered each time a hunting dice falls on “10”, no ways around it. If you’re unlucky enough to get this, a predator will attack your cat while it looks for prey!

You must control the predator. Also keep in mind that the predator will be trying to win the battle, so you can’t just force the predator to lose the battle. More than one cat can attack the predator though, and it is really common that as soon as someone gets a battle encounter the whole group of cats will attack the predator immediately. Now, there is the other side of a coin, more than one predator can appear if more than one cat rolls a battle encounter.

You pick which predator appears, though some members like to make it random through number generators outside from the site to make it more interesting. Now, unless you want to bring the predator as prey to your camp, you don’t need to make it hit “0” on their HP. It’s enough to lower their HP to 1/2 of their full HP to chase them away.

When you rp as a predator, the predator will ALWAYS move first since they ambush your cat. After that, it will be a constant back and forth of one turn for the predator, one turn for your cat unless you use a stun move on them. Then you can post twice or trice with your cat, depending on how many turns the predator is stunned.

I’ll force a battle encounter to show you how it is made, so no dice will be used this time. We will use the easiest predator to defeat on the list, the owls (Yes, I know the raccoons have less HP, but their SP is higher and their moves deal a lot more damage than an owl’s, so they are considered way more dangerous, especially for apprentices, as they can KO them in one hit while owls need at least two. Plus, the raccoon has two moves on its arsenal while the owl only has one). This will be considered a real battle, so HP and SP won’t be regenerated. Don’t worry about your cat though, since you’re the one going under training, the attacks of the owl will be locked on my cat only.

Blizzardshine smiled and nodded, clearly proud to see Snakepaw catching their first piece of prey “Well done! You learn quickly” With that she turned around to try and find another piece of prey, completely unaware of the big bird looming over them. It wasn’t until the owl dropped from the sky and slashed at her with his sharp talons that she knew she had dropped her guard, focusing only on the training and forgetting to check for potential predators around them. She let out a yowl of pain and surprise, but was glad that the owl had gone for her and not her apprentice.

Snakepaw let out a gasp and yowled as an owl suddenly swooped down towards her mentor. "Blizzardshine, no!" She leapt forward, attempting to shield her and attack the owl, using Front Paw Strike on it.

OOC: Yeah, the member that rolled the battle encounter takes the role of the predator. Just as a side-note here, all the cats attacking the opponent or fighting alongside someone must be listed. The owl’s HP is down below half now, so I’ll let you chose if you want to chase it off or hunt it to bring to camp as prey. Also be careful, you forgot to edit the Owl’s HP on your post.


Blizzardshine hissed at the owls after she felt its talons scratching her back, turning around with her claws unsheathed and ready to fight it off. If she had known that the owl would be around here during their training she would’ve chosen another spot, but now it was too late for that. She had to act and fast, before the owl decided that Snakepaw was a better prey.

Snakepaw felt a surge of energy and determination. This could be great prey for the Clan! With that thought in mind, she leapt once more, using her paw to try and strike down the owl.

Blizzardshine hissed as the owl turned it's head, his cruel eyes landing on Snakepaw after probably noticing it wouldn't be able to beat her and deciding the younger cat would be a way better pick. However, as soon as the owl tried to attack the apprentice she jumped right between them without thinking, recieving the blow once more. She didn't care if she needed to go back to camp and pay a visit to the the medicine cat's den, she was going to make sure Snakepaw made it back without a single scratch.

Snakepaw watched in shock as Blizzardshine jumped in between her and the owl and attempted another attack. "Blizzardshine, no!" she yowled and attempted to slash the owl's wing.

Blizzardshine turned towards the owl before it could fly away, clamping her jaws on the feathers of its tail and pulling it down to the ground with a strong yank, the strength of the pull causing the feathers she was holding to get plucked off the big bird’s body and end up stuffing her whole mouth. She knew she could’ve gone for the kill right then and there, but she wanted to give her apprentice the chance to finish the job and bring the owl to camp as her own prey. Defeating an owl and bringing it back to camp was quite a great story for a new apprentice to take pride on, and she wanted to grant this golden opportunity to Snakepaw. She just had to act fast, attack before the owl could recover and take flight once more.

Blizzardshine used Tail Yank on the owl, dealing 9 damage and using 10 stamina. The owl is stunned for 1 turn.

Snakepaw smirked and nodded to her mentor. This was her chance and she was glad to see Blizzardshine had provided her with the opportunity to get her first kill. She lunged towards the owl, slashing at it once more to secure the kill.

Blizzardshime smiled and nodded at Snakepaw as she finished off the Owl “You take it back to camp, it was your kill after all” She meowed happily before heading towards the place where the two squirrels were, grabbing them by the tail to go back to camp. She was wondering if Snakeaw would be able to carry the owl on her own though, and was willing to help if the bird ended up being too big for the apprentice to do so.
