Sunpaw's Assessment

Heatherpetal panted and fell back to all fours, gnashing her teeth as she tried to bear through the pain under her eyes, fresh blood trickling from the wounds. She smiled at Sunpaw's comment, though. "It takes a lot of practice and balance. I wasn't able to get the move down until I became a warrior. I'll teach it to you when you're older, though, promise. For now, let's give your assessment one more try and pray to StarClan we don't run into anymore predators. If we do, we'll just have to go back to camp. Are you up for trying one last time?"

"Yes! I don't want to become a warrior without passing my hunting assessment! And I don't think I could do another battle either... is your eye okay?" Sunpaw asked, concerned.

"Don't worry, I've dealt with worse pain before. I don't want to cut your assessment off too soon. You go on and give the rest of your hunting the best you've got." She purred and rested her nose on his forehead. "And as far as I'm concerned, you've already passed the assessment. I know that finishing is just for its own sake, but tomorrow I will talk to Leopardclaw about taking you to visit the Moonstone."

Sunpaw hopped on his toes in excitement. "Alright, let's give it another try! I still need to catch a mouse and a squirrel, so it shouldn't take too long!" He purred, and off he went. The russet tom sat in a hunting stance under the Great Sycamore, listening and smelling for a squirrel. After a few moments, he saw one through the underbrush, and he slowly but steadily approached it. He leapt when the time was right, his powerful hind legs springing him across the clearing. He brought both paws down hard on the squirrel, killing it swiftly. He purred as he sent a thank-you prayer to Starclan, then went on his way to Snakerocks to find a mouse.

Sunpaw carefully approached Snakerocks, keeping an ear out for any adders. He had heard many a story as a kit of powerful warriors being brought down with one fatal bite from the creatures, and he wasn't willing to meet one himself. Keeping a wide berth from the pile of rocks, Sunpaw sniffed the ground, searching for the scent of a mouse. He decided to settle down and wait- it had served him well for the past few hunts. A mouse soon came into view, and Sunpaw wiggled his haunches slightly in anticipation. He was nearly in range when he could have sworn he heard a hiss from the rocks, and he darted away, fur bristling. He realized that he had just scared away the mouse, likely over nothing, and sighed heavily. Time to try again.

Sunpaw settled down, this time much further from the rocks, and waited for another mouse to wander past. After enough time, the russet tom saw a mouse skittering in the underbrush. Sunpaw crept forward slowly. But as he crept forward, an owl swooped at him. He tried dodging, but its talons dug into his shoulders, and he shook harshly to try to make it release him.

Another predator?! You have got to be kidding me... Heatherpetal rushed to Sunpaw's aid a third time, rising up on her hind paws again to slash her claws against its face as her apprentice held it down.
