A grumpy mentor and his apprentice (CLOSED)

Batfang had been too busy with his kits that he almost forgot that he had an apprentice. And not a simple apprentice: it was Ivystar’s daughter. The charcoal tom let out a frustrated hiss. Why he would have so many apprentices? They were a burden and most of the time, he only wasted his time with them.
The warrior entered into the apprentice den and searched for the gray pelt of the She-cat.”Ashpaw! Get up already and meet me in the entrance! It’s training time!” He mewed loudly seeing at the apprentice with narrowed and annoyed eyes. Batfang left the den and walked to the meeting place, hating all the snow around him. It was cold and wet... and it remember him how his parents abandoned him in that wet nursery without saying a word.

Unlike when she was a kit, Ashpaw was now a light sleeper and woke up easily at the sound of her name. Lifting her head and uncurling, she was surprised to hear that it was her mentor, Batfang, who had come to fetch her. Passing her tongue through her fur a few times, she thought to herself, This is a first. I wonder how this will go. An optimist and dreamer, she characteristically hoped that the training session would go well.

With some quiet excitement, the silvery she-cat left the apprentice den and looked around at the snow. There were some larger pawsteps tracking through the cold, white material. These must be his, she mused. She traced her mentor's larger pawsteps through the snow until she found him.

Turning her glittering green eyes onto her mentor, she greeted in her high, quiet voice, "Hello, Batfang. What are we doing today?" Her tail was raised in anticipation.

”Today we will work on battle techniques, hunting and swimming. It’s going to be a long day and don’t expect me to be soft with you because you’re the leader’s daughter. Come and don’t slow down.” He said strictly. He lashed his tail and left the camp trotting through the snowy territories. He ran as he usually did, not considering too much about the shorter legs of the She-cat. A warrior should be strong enough to bare this speed of running and exercise her legs for future swimming.

The charcoal warrior stopped when he finally chose a good spot for training lesson. He turned his sight back at Ashpaw, narrowing his eyes seriously. ”I heard you went to a patrol with the deputy so I guess you know something about hunting. Tell me, what did you learn from them?”

Ashpaw lifted her tail in excitement as he mentioned swimming. Although she had been born into RiverClan, she hadn't yet taken a full dip in the water. She blinked at his last statement, a little taken aback by his annoyed tone and comment, but remained alert and nodded at him to show that she was ready to go.

Batfang traveled much faster than the speeds to which she was used, and so the sleek but small she-cat was forced to break into a run herself. Although Batfang remained at least a good fox-length or so in front of her, Ashpaw at the very least never lost sight of him.

When Batfang finally slowed down, Ashpaw ran until she caught up with him. When she stopped, she panted with her head facing the ground to try to catch her breath. "That was... much faster... than I've ever run before!"

When her mentor spoke again, the apprentice looked up and saw that his eyes were narrowed. He's much sterner than Jaystream ever was, she thought with a wary look on her own face. Swallowing to relieve a knot she felt rising in her throat, she mewed in her high, quiet voice, "Jaystream took some other apprentices and me fishing. We all caught something at least- I caught my first fish, thanks to Swanpaw showing me the proper technique. We also had to battle a raccoon."

"A battle with a raccoon? Interesting. Well, what are you waiting! Show me what you learn with the deputy." He mewed, pointing the clear water of the stream next to them. The warrior looked at him strictly while he approached the shore and waited to see how much she had learned about fishing. If she knew the basics, then he could teach her more complex techniques and that would speed up her training. Batfang wanted to finish this quickly so he could come back to his usual warrior duties and with his family.

OOC: Sorry that I've been away for a while; RL has been busy. Luckily, I came back before the 1 month dead thread thing.

IC: Ashpaw twitched her ear with some self-consciousness but took a deep breath, then padded over to the area to which her mentor had pointed. Readying herself, she raised her paw and looked into the clear depths of the water. Here goes nothing, she thought to herself.

With a small splash, she struck her paw into the water and successfully scooped up a slippery silver fish from the stream. Purring, she nudged the still floundering fish towards her mentor with her tail raised. She waited for a response.

The spotted charcoal tom looked at the apprentice with narrowed eyes and when she brought him the fish, he barely made an unimpressed expression. "Good enough. But, do you know how to fish using your jaws?" He mewed with an inquisitive tone, his tail flicking impatiently.

Ashpaw was a bit put out by his lackluster response at first, but then took on a bewildered expression. "With my... jaws? Uh, no, I've never tried that." No wonder he's unimpressed, she thought to herself uneasily.

The warrior stood up and walked to the water without saying a word to his apprentice. Walking a bit closer, he let the water reach his paws and there he waited for the first silver flash to appear. When the opportunity showed up, Batfang dipped his head swiflty with his jaws open. He closed them fastly around the slippery body of the fish and then he took it out of the stream. Thanks to his strong jaws, the fish didn't fight for too long.

The charcoal tom walked back to Ashpaw and left the fish in front of her paws. "Fishing with your jaws requires patient and speed. If you're not fast, you will end up with only water in your mouth instead of fish. Now, do it."

Ashpaw watched, impressed with her mentor. When it was her turn, she nodded and gave a deep breath, preparing herself.

Moving closer to the river's edge again, this time she crouched with both paws planted on the bank. Moving her tail slightly back and forth from side to side, she cocked her head and focused her green eyes on the river. Spotting a flash of silver, she craned her neck forward in her attempt.

Succeeding, she snatched the fish out of the water and into the air. She wasn't as strong as her mentor, so she dropped it onto the bank as it flailed, but she quickly ended its life with a swipe of her claws. Beaming, she looked up at Batfang with a glow of satisfaction.
