Nut to Fawn Training (For Poison Ivy)

Nutfur padded out of the warrior's den, feeling anxiety grip at her stomach. She hadn't even been a warrior for a moon, and she was already a mentor. Memories of Dawnsong and her own first day of training filled her mind as she padded towards the apprentice den. She missed Dawnsong, but knew that her former mentor would want her to be happy. Thoughts of learning to hunt filled her mind, and even the regret of not learning how to fish until late in her training. Well, that wasn't going to happen to Fawnpaw. By now, she had reached the apprentice den and had peaked her head inside, hazel eyes searching for her apprentice.
"Fawnpaw, wake up. Time to train," Nufur instructed gently. She stepped out of the den and waited for the apprentice to emerge. She was planning on teaching her the basics of fishing and swimming today, but the first day wouldn't be a good day for going to the river. She would start at the Broken Pools, and they would work their way up to the river.

Fawnpaw lifted her head, yawning. "Huh? Oh! Okay!" She got up and padded out of the den. "We'll be swimming today, right?" she asked.

OOC: Do you know the hunting system?

"Yes Fawnpaw. We are going to be swimming and doing a little bit of fishing. Follow me," Nutfur explained, gesturing welcomingly with her tail. She started padding out of camp, checking behind her a few times to make sure that Fawnpaw was following her. To get out of camp, they needed to walk through some shallow water, which was mostly covered in reeds. Instead of turning into the forest, she continued through the reeds. Soon they arrived at their destination.
"Here are the Broken Pools, where you are going to learn to fish and swim. How much do you know about either of those already?"

OOC: Well, I'm currently doing another hunting topic so I've already been told about how it works. You just choose the prey you want to catch, roll the dice and if it lands on a certain number(s), you can catch it?

Fawnpaw hesitated for a moment, trying to see if she did know something about that stuff. "I.. don't know actually," she replied thoughtfully.

OOC: Great. You can ask me if you have any questions.

"That's okay, I didn't expect for you to know anything," Nutfur replied, a little disappointed that Fawnpaw didn't know anything. "Anyways, first I'm going to teach you to swim. That is the most important thing to learn before you go fishing. You have to know how to recover if you are unbalanced and trip in the water. Now follow me." As she spoke, the warrior thought of training with Finchstream, Finchpaw at the time, and how the first time she had caught a fish she had fallen face first into the river. Smiling, she waded a little ways into the deepest pool, the cold water hardly even bothering her after moons of swimming. The water would only go a little over the apprentice's head in the middle, but that would be perfect for training.

Fawnpaw padd d after her mentor, excited. She always wanted to swim and fish.

"Okay, listen carefully. The water is going to go a little bit over your head here, but don't be afraid. Don't breath heavily or flail wildly. If it goes over your head, hold your breath. To stay floating, you have to move your paws like you're batting at a leaf, but with as much force as you can, while kicking your pack legs. Like this." Nutfur padded further into the pool, and once she was shoulder deep began to paddle. Due to the fact that she was a warrior, she was easily able to stay afloat.

Fawnpaw listened carefully to what Nutfur was saying. She watched the brown she-cat get into the water. Fawnpaw nodded and mimicked her mentor, carefully padding into the water.
The water felt great! Once she got to where it was deep, Fawnpaw was a little surprised when she couldn't touch the floor of the pool, despite what Nutfur had told her. She quickly began to paddle with her paws, and kicked with her back legs, using as much force as she could. She held her head up, and paddled above water. This wasn't so bad! "I-I'm doing it!" she mewed excitedly. "Should I try and go underwater?"

Nutfur swam across the pool, and turned around as soon as her feet could reach the bottom. She first noticed that Fawnpaw was a smaller apprentice than she had been, and that might make swimming a little harder for her. That fact added to her surprise when the apprentice began to successfully swim across. She certainly was a quick learner, and obviously had the natural talent that all RiverClan members inherited. The cream she-cat's next words surprised her further. Well, she seemed to be a hard worker as well.
"Great job! And if you think you are ready, you can go underwater. But you will have to use more force, close your eyes, and hold your breath, okay? I'll be right here if you need help." the chestnut warrior explained.

Fawnpaw nodded, though felt a little worried when she realized she will have to use even more strength. She was already feeling a little tired. I will be able to do this! she silently encouraged herself.
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, then ducked her head underwater. She kicked her back legs and paddled with her front legs as had as she could. She could feel herself move through the water. She was doing it! But it wasn't long before her legs were too exhausted, and she was running out of breath. She lifted her head back up above water, and swam to the shore, but didn't get out yet. She just clung to the edge as she rested, because the water didn't really have a current.

Nutfur watched excitedly, though also a little nervously. Hopefully she wouldn't end up having to help out Fawnpaw. It was hard enough to be in charge of an apprentice, and it would be even more terrifying to be have to save her life. Praying to StarClan that her apprentice would be okay, she watched as she ducked under the surface of the pool. There were a few moments of silence, where the only way she knew of the other she-cat's presence was the cream colored cat shaped blob under the water. Subconsciously, she held her breath until the smaller cat surfaced, and then let out a sight of relief. She nodded to Fawnpaw with a look that conveyed the pride and relief that she was feeling.
"You did amazing! Better than I did as an apprentice anyways. I think that it is time that you learn how to fish, seeing how much of a naturally talented swimmer you are. Follow me," the warrior praised, genuinely awed by her apprentice. She wondered if she had been so quick to learn when she was that age. She climbed out of the pool and shook the water off of her pelt. Though that was a good pool for swimming in, more fish lived in the ones that had small streams feeding into them. She padded over to one like that and waited for her apprentice to catch up.

Fawnpaw purred as her mentor's praise. She climbed out of the water, and followed Nutfur to Learn to fish.

Once Ivypaw had arrived, Nutfur stood up and looked into the water. Mostly just minnows lived around here, and it would take about three minnows to feed a cat. But how could she teach fishing? It was almost like an instinct to her, and she never really thought about how to fish anymore. Finally she decided just to demonstrate, and then see if she could explain afterwards. 
"I'm going to show you how to fish now. Watch carefully," she informed, looking at her apprentice for a few moments before turning back to the pool. Taking a deep breath, she waited for a minnow to come into her line of vision, and flicked her unsheathed paw just ahead of where it was, causing it to basically swim into her claws. Because of the size of the fish, just her claws killed it, and she didn't need to bite its spine.

Fawnpaw watched carefully, making sure she didn't miss anything. "Okay. So basically I catch it with my claws?" she asked. "And are there other methods of catching fish? Like for bigger ones? Just wondering."

OOC: I need to use the hunting dice for catching fish, right?

OOC: Sorry this took so long! And yeah, you do use the hunting system, I just forgot. Once again, my apologies.

Nutfur nodded at Fawnpaw's question. "Yeah, you flick your claws about a whisker length in front of the fish. And you're right. For bigger ones, you bite their spine, but these will just die from the force of your claws. Like this." Once again, she searched the slow but steady current for a small spot of silver, and soon one caught her eye. Tightening her jaw in concentration, she flicked her claw at where it would be in just a moment. Once again, she killed it pretty easily, the force of her claws killing it right away, She placed it next to the other minnow and looked to her apprentice. "Any other questions? If not, you can try to catch your own."
