Assessment Time

OOC: Mainly intended for those who just need their assessment done to complete their training, along with their mentors if they want. However, I don't really think it matters if you do the assessment last or not... so as long as you've been on a patrol, have had battle training, and been around for a month, I think it'll be fine if you join too (I just don't want super new apprentices having their assessments already, is all ;-;).

IC: The sun had been relentless. For the last couple of days it seemed like it was determined to bake RiverClan alive.

Reedheart wasn't complaining, though. Birdsong filled the air to be replaced by the lullaby of crickets at Sundown, the sedge and reeds rustled with the movements of prey, and the fish had never been easier to catch, with the river being so low, lazy, and clear. Every day had been practically a feast; demolish the freshkill pile one night, and then completely fill it up again by sunup.

The warrior wondered with an amused smile how lousy ShadowClan was at hunting if they couldn't even feed their kits during Greenleaf. He shook himself out of his thoughts and tried to look alert, lest he be the subject of some cruel prank. Reedheart wouldn't put it past them.

He was waiting on some of the more elder apprentices of RiverClan and their mentors, including his own. They had an assessment today, and the mentors needed to monitor their skill and how well they were doing. Who knew, maybe if they did well enough, they'd be starting their silent vigil at sunset.

Cherrypaw padded out of the apprentices den to her mentor. She looked excitedly at him"What are we doing today?"she asked her brown tail flicking back and forth.

As the silver tabby walked towards Reedheart, she was fairly annoyed by the radiating lights of the sun. The past days were scorching ablaze throughout RiverClan territory, though Mintpaw didn't exactly complain about it. She thought it was a little nice honestly - and besides, if it's hot up there, it'd be so much better to jump into a stream and cool down, right? The sweet sounds of birdsongs filled the she-cat's ears, seeming to match in rhythm with the gentle breeze of the wind. Not to mention the prey was simpler to catch, keeping the fresh-kill pile higher than ever. It filled so quickly that it wasn't so hard just to eat without a care in the world. Turning her glance towards ShadowClan's territory, she let out a small laugh full of amusement, considering that they couldn't feed their own clan during greenleaf. That was a bit of a lousy bit, now. Shrugging, Mintpaw came up to Reedheart, before waiting to see if Silvershade was coming. After all, Reedheart wouldn't be able to watch over all their assessments, right?

More than likely correct, Mintpaw. A noise rustled behind the smaller cat and a white furred nose poked through the bushes, before the lithe form of Silvershade emerged. The sun beat on her back rather uncomfortably, it was one of the few moments she wasn't glad for her longer-than-average fur. She flicked an ear in annoyance, before padding over and sitting next to Reedheart, waiting for the rest of the apprentices to show up.

OOC: Hey man, don't be going an dissing my home clan, now. *snap snap* and I'm joining because why not? After this all I will need is battle training.

As the sun came up, Cinderpaw quickly fluttered her eyes open and got up with a start. She had forgotten for a moment that today was her assessment. Reedheart had told her that he was going to take her along with a few others to finish training today... well, the hunting part of it anyway. She knew she could do it, but it didn't stop her from being nervous. Who knew how she would do? Would she fail? No, she couldn't! She hoped... Quickly shaking out her fur, she padded out of the apprentices' den and found her den mates and Reedheart. With a proud look on her face, she reached them and sat down with an almost faked look of confidence. "Good morning!" She mewed happily.

Duckpaw yawned, woken up by Cinderpaw's dashing out of the apprentice den. Huh? What's she all nervous about? he wondered. Vision still blurry with sleep, be managed to make out the forms of a few cats, then remembered.. today was their assessment. Standing up he stretched, shook his head and walked outside. "Hi everybody." he greeted, sitting down next to Mintpaw.

Reedheart nodded in greeting to Silvershade and watched as the apprentices began to file in. There were so many, and they seemed so different from the naive kits he had known in the nursery. Now it was time to see how much they'd really grown.

"Is that everyone?" Reedheart mewed, looking around. Gah, he'd never be able to keep track. There were so many of them! The queens certainly have been busy... he thought internally as he let out a sigh. Oh well. Any apprentices who couldn't make it could have their chance later.

"Today, we'll be seeing how well you've grown over the past moons." the tom started, walking among the apprentices. "I want each of you to catch three pieces of prey and return here once you're finished. Silvershade and I will be watching you."

With a nod and lash of his tail, he looked over the apprentices again. "Good luck, and get going!" Reedheart exclaimed to send them off. They were lucky. He knew that the prey would be practically running into their paws. It wouldn't take long.

Smiling as Duckpaw sat next to her, she gave her fellow friend a gentle nudge. She had enjoyed being apprenticed with him and the others, seeing how they had grown so far together. Nodding a greeting to the others, Mintpaw carefully listened to Reedheart, giving a small laugh out of amusement of the fact that he couldn't tell that was all the apprentices. There weren't that many of them after all, and he was the mentor of some of them, so she couldn't help it. As the tom walked amongst them, she heard every word he said, listening as closely as she possibly could. Come back with three pieces of prey? That should be easy! The only thing that got on her nerve was that the two warriors would be watching them, and who would know when they were watching how they caught their prey? After Reedheart gave the signal, the she-cat nodded before dashing off.

Jumping into the bushes, Mintpaw rushed to the closest stream - considering that's where prey liked to come around - and continued along, leaping across the stepping stones carefully. Once she reached the other side, she went to a nice cool area on the water's bank and got into position. Straightening her body, the apprentice put her tail behind her, with an occasional swirl, checking if her shadow was over the water, fixing the mistakes she had, and observed the rushing water carefully. At the corner of her eye, she saw a school of fish - how timely! Silvershade said prey was bountiful, so this should be an easy assessment if she catches them. This school of fish sure was a bit small though, compared to what she's seen. Perhaps she'll try for two of them?

Flicking her paws across the water's glistening surface, Mintpaw saw the two she aimed for leap onto the shore. Pinning one down with a forepaw, the apprentice bit into the scaly, smooth flesh of the fish gently until it stopped flopping about. Stopping its movements dead, the silver tabby did the same with the other one. Purring at her successful catch, Mintpaw wondered whether she should try for another fish, considering how simple it was to catch the delectable creatures.

Cherrypaw nodded and padded off. She had her ears pricked and her mouth parted. She looked back and forth before passing a little ways forward and stopped next to the river. She sat crouched her claws unsheathed she saw a shadow in the water and quickly shot her paw into the water.Cherrypaw watched as it landed on shore she quickly bit into it until it stopped flopping before watching the water again for another fish.

Quickly, Cinderpaw turned from the group and took off in her own direction. Taking a deep breath, she tried to gather the scents around her, hoping to find anything that smelled like prey. Of course, she wanted to go to the river to start, but she had a feeling that she wasn't gong to be the only one there. She wanted to be on her own. Try to catch things by herself. Mainly because if she made a fool of herself, no one would be there to laugh. As she stood there, a scent finally passed over her nose. It was extremely familiar to her, especially since it was one of the things that was found in the freshkill pile a lot... other than fish.

Quickly, Cinderpaw dropped into a crouch as she searched to find the water vole that had been in the area. She couldn't see it through the reeds yet, but she was certain that it was here. The scent smelled fresh enough and it she looked, she would find it. After a few moments of following its trail, she froze as she heard the rustling of the reeds. As she drew closer, she finally found it. Its tail was facing towards her, and she tried to remember what she was taught. Making sure she had everything perfect, she pounced for the animal, her claws extended as her sleek body sliced through the air...

...And yet it still went wrong. As soon as her feet left the ground, the vole instantly shot up and took off, taking cover into the safety of its burrow not too far off. Cinderpaw didn't even have a chance of catching it. As she readjusted herself, she huffed at her failure, already feeling a little bit of aggravation as she turned to go towards the river.

As she progressed to stare down into the stream, Mintpaw got a bit... bored. Then again, she didn't want to leave the stream to find another piece of prey, considering that the other apprentices might steal the fish she caught. Then, a familiar scent hit her - a type of prey that appeared on the fresh-kill pile often - besides fish, the water voles were plentiful around RiverClan territory. It shouldn't be too difficult to catch one of those silly creatures, right? In her opinion, since Cherrypaw came by her stream for the assessment, Mintpaw took hold of both of her fish and hid them in the reeds before getting ready to track the vole down. Seeing a brown tuft of fur hidden in the various tall grasses of the marshy territory that belonged to RiverClan, the she-cat leaped gracefully to get a little closer, going back onto one of the stepping stones, before getting herself ready.

The water vole, a bit large in size - perhaps almost half the size of Mintpaw - was nibbling on one of the stalks. It was quite hypnotic to watch it rip off piece by piece, but as soon as the silver tabby apprentice shook her head, she quickly got into a crouch. Of course, she had lost track of where it was since it was on the move, but using her nose, she tipped back her head, took in the remaining scent of where it was, and started to follow its trail. As she continued to follow it, she noticed quickly she was going in a circle - it was heading back to the stream! Grumbling, the she-cat soon saw the vole once again, except it was swimming towards its home in the reeds. Going on the stepping stone closest to the brown furry creature, Mintpaw double-checked - heck, even triple-checked - if she was perfect before pouncing, her sharp claws unsheathed, and her body elegantly following the creature's path.

Slipping her paws into the water vole's soft flesh, she bit into the fur of the prey gently before it went limp. The water around her seemed to be going in slow motion, reflecting the death of the vole, dripping around like the rain before going into a beautiful ripple of waves. Taking the prey into her mouth, she went back ashore, feeling the gentle breeze and the warmth of the sun, grabbing the two fish from before. It would seem she may be the first to finish. Passing by Cherrypaw, Mintpaw gave her a nod and showed in her eyes a sign of good luck before heading back. She hadn't seen Duckpaw yet, neither did she see Cinderpaw, but they're most likely somewhere else. Dropping her three pieces of prey onto the same area where the apprentices and their mentors met. Sighing, the she-cat wished she hadn't finished early because now she would have to wait for the others. Sitting by her prey, she watched the clouds, remembering that she was actually quite gentle and patient, which was why she could catch prey so much more easily than the others. Though, she had to admit that she wanted to have Duckpaw finish next, considering that before the ceremony, she wished to speak to him.

Mintpaw had grown to like the tom more than she expected, though whether or not he liked her was a different case. Now, all she could do was wait and be a drifting cloud awaiting for the time it would drop its raindrops onto the surface of the world...
