After what felt like ages of dragging their paws across mountainous tundra, the Clans had the forest in sight. It was time to go home. Unanimous voices had announced the decision to simply return back to camp, to observe the monthly vigil by returning to the lands that they truly called home. In their time away, it seemed the forest had healed, once more holding the familiar leaf-bare air that many warriors knew. Peace was on the horizon, and the trials appeared to be over...
...but not quite. For in the marshes, dwelled a lingering threat. Tension lurked in the air, hostility right on its heels. As if bringing with it the remnants of what had led them to flee towards home in the first place, a growling in the distance closed in on the outskirts of Shadowclan's camp as its occupants returned.

The season so far had been long and cold, every day a struggle to survive. But as pawsteps approached, the beast realized that this was a gift; an abundance of prey walking directly into their line of sight.
The beast leapt forward, howling to its companion as it swiped one massive paw toward the front of the group to push them down.
Dog #1 used Heavy Blow on Sablestrike, dealing 17 damage and costing 22 SP!

Shadowclan's trek through the mountain pass was finally coming to an end, their familiar territory beginning to envelope them on all sides as Sablestrike lead his clan through the marshes. They were home, but their camp would undoubtedly be in need of repairs from the moons of neglect. Nests would need replacing first and foremost, but before that could happen he planned on sleeping the day away. Sablestrike turned his attention to Leopardstar, ingraining himself in the idle chatter they had held for the past few hours. Then it hit him. It felt like a tree falling on his head sending the tom stumbling in the mud. He had no time to call the clan forward, nor was it needed. Sablestrike launched himself at his attacker, a grisly looking dog. It was massive compared to him, but nowhere near as threatening as the beasts they had run from.
Sablestrike used Front Paw Strike on Dog #1, Dealing 11 HP and Costing 7 SP Night Finesse is active

Drool dripped from the maw of a scarred beast as it joined its brother in the assault, snapping its jaws closed on the prey in front of it. There seemed to be a pack of these morsels congregating behind the two in the front, but those tasty mouthfuls would have to wait until this one was digested.

Badgermask had breathed scarcely a word since the trek back to the Clans had begun - she had no words to speak to her Clanmates after all. She was angry. Angry that the world - the Stars - would not give her family a break. Angry at herself for her inability to protect said family. She had not gotten much sleep as every time she closed her eyes she was haunted by those she had failed. Batswarm, Moondancer, Echomist... Every death chipped away at her soul and she wasn't sure how much was left.
She couldn't deny that she was happy about finally returning home but as her ears caught the growling on the horizon, her expression quickly soured as she came to a stop. Her heartbeat quickened, the howling that had preluded her father's demise was brought to mind but she shoved it all down as she focused on the rage of the situation instead of the sickening fear. Ah - so the Stars were not done chewing on her family...She could only hope that enough of them would be standing when they elected to finally spit them out.
Perhaps she would have spoken a warning - but even with her advance notice due to not being distracted...There was no time before the two dogs were upon them. Dogs that went for the two cats leading the group - Sablestrike and Leopardstar. The sight of her mother being struck spurred Badgermask into action before she could even think - she would not make the same mistake again. She would prove herself good for something. An angry snarl ripped its way out of her throat as she raced towards the dog that had bit down on her mother - any sense of self-preservation was gone in the wake of perhaps losing another loved one.
She slipped below the beast, preparing to crouch and launch herself at its belly but the dog shifted - its claws ripping into her shoulder as she bit back a hiss of pain. No, this wasn't going to work - there wasn't an opening like she expected! With a snarl of annoyance, she spun and darted free - sliding to a stop as she turned to judge what her next action would be against these foul dogs.
Badgermask used Belly Rake on Dog #2 and failed, costing 25 stamina and taking 5 recoil damage.

Larkpaw was padding along beside her mentor, chattering away. There was hardly a time where she wasn't talking, due to this she didn't hear the growling or howling coming from the beast in front of her. She did however see a flash of fur leave from her side, that drew her out of her chatter. Her eyes widened and ears laid flat to her head as she spotted the dogs attacking her clanmates.
"Not again She hissed not sure what to do. The Predators were a lot stronger than she was and that terrified her, but she couldn't let that stand in her way. She needed to help protect her clan, but Badgermask's words flooded her mind, "its better to use your energy to flee and live than waste your life in a pointless battle". 'But this battle isn't pointless is it' Larkpaw was trapped in her thoughts, she broke free long enough to dart into a hole in the ground. Once inside she was petrified , her claws digging into the ground as she watched the drooling monsters attack her clan... again.

Tawnyshadow certainly was not expecting that as soon as they stepped foot into their homeland that they'd be attacked. The wound on her shoulder was still sour, and grew worse with each passing day that herbs were not available to her. She would once have insisted on sparing herbs for other clanmates rather than herself, but if there was even a scrap of leaves now she'd take them without complain. Walking itself hurt, and she found herself useless for the first time in her life at hunting. Everything hurt, but when did she ever care about herself? As soon as the dogs appeared, all caution for her injuries were thrown away and she flung herself at one of the dogs, teeth closing around it's tail and yanking it back with as much strength as she could muster.

Quillsplash returned with ShadowClan with guilt weighing down each step. Tawnyshadow's situation became more and more pitiful by the day, and each time pain flashed through the she-cat's eyes, he felt his stomach churn. He had made himself hunt twice as much to make up for ridding the Clan of a warrior, but he could see that it only made the she-cat feel worse. What was there left for him to do but apologize for his incompetence? When she flew past him, teeth bared and claws at the ready to defend her Clan once more, he couldn't help but remember Pineblossom's words. About how he didn't have to stay in this Clan, with these cats. He could be free, without having to protect anyone... and with no one to protect him either. He owed his life to her, and the least he owed her was an attempt to make sure her wounds didn't get any worse.

Swiftheart was not sure what she felt when they finally were getting back home to familiar lands. The lands being familiar helped but the missing clanmates that were supposed to be there with them still never left her thoughts.
She was just about to go over to Sablestrike and see if he would like a chance to talk things over after.... the incident between the two of them when they were under attack yet again.
Her claws slid out of instinct as she watched her leader and deputy get attacked by dogs.
She was closer to Sablestrike having already been approaching him to try and make amends for their past encounter.
She leapt at dog 1 and raked her claws down it.
She joined the battle this time fighting side by side with sablestrike

Sunflare’s heart soared as he took in the familiar marsh scents. He was home at last, and he relished digging his claws into the soft earth. But it seemed the marsh was still hostile. At least it wasn’t wolves this time. Sunflare had seen dogs before. He was sure he could handle a dog. The cinnamon tom leaped into action, charging towards the beast that had his former mentor cornered. Now was his moment to impress Sablestrike!

There was never a moment in their trek through the mountain pass that any of them felt the need to let the group of cats they followed know that this Nomadic group had ever been near. Virtue avoided hostile confrontation where possible, and his beloved companions were of the same mind.
However, this was a different story. The familiar sound of growling followed by ferocious barking had Virtue’s full attention. The one-eyed, battle-hardened tom held no hesitation in his stride, singling to the others that he had full intention to aid the small band of cats in their fight.
From the shade of dried bushes and felled logs came sharp teeth that nipped at Dog #1's heels, the satisfying thud of it collapsing to the ground in yelping pain as fangs met the soft tendons of its heel.
Virtue used Ankle Biter, dealing 8 damage and costing 30 SP.
Ankle Biter in effect! Dog #1 deals half damage for 1 turn!

Creating conflict was never something he wanted, but protecting others from conflict was a no-brainer for the tom. These cats had been kind enough to forge a path for their fellow nomads to tread, it was only fair that he and his pay them back for their unknown generosity.
Emerging from the shadows and slipping around the back of a beast, Steadfast sunk sharp teeth deep into leg of one of the mutts. It crumpled to the ground with yells and yips, but these violent creatures deserved no remorse from him.
Steadfast used Ankle Biter, Dealing 8 HP and Costing 30 SP.
Ankle Biter in effect! Dog #2 deals half damage for 2 turns!
What had once seemed like an easy feast had turned into a swarm of rats nipping at him from all sides. The beast swung a heavy paw at wounded feline aiming to bat her away. The beast's balance was thrown off as something sharp clamped down on its back leg, the resulting blow only succeeding in giving the prey a light blow.
Dog #2 used Heavy Blow on Leopardstar, Dealing 9 HP (Halved from Ankle Biter), and Costing 22 SP

The dog howled again; this time in distress. Lashing out at one of the others--there were so many, and more leapt out from the shadows; as if the shadows themselves had come to life and wanted vengeance. Vengeance for what, who could say?
Dog #1 used Iron Bite on Swiftheart, dealing 11 (halved) damage and costing 30 SP! Ankle Biter is no longer in effect.

Pineblossom was relieved to be home. When they finally entered the forest, she talked with her kits about ShadowClan territory, telling them about the smell of pines and the blessed darkness and how cool it was in the hot months. That relief was immediately snatched away once they neared camp and were confronted by these sudden huge beasts, snarling and growling at them. Pineblossom had faced off against dogs only a couple of times in the past, and after the scare with the wolves, she had no desire to face off against their smaller cousins.
“Keep back,” Pineblossom hissed to her children and she immediately shoved them back and behind her. Her fur bristled and she bared her fangs. They would not just run from these dogs as they had the wolves. Pineblossom wouldn’t engage unless they tried to attack her children. Her priority now was keeping her kits safe and away from the vicious jaws of these hounds. She would trust in her clan to do swift work of them.
Pineblossom is defending her kits but not directly engaging.
ShadowClan cats are used to the darkness and the things that the shade can hide. Stealth at night is one of their prides. Yet there was another presence that had failed to be noticed in the chaos of the dogs’ arrival. After two of the stranger cats burst onto the scene, so then came a third, emerging out of the darkness like a living shadow and whining as she ran up behind the cross smoky tom.
“Steadyyyy!” the she-cat whined. She came up behind him and leapt forward, latching her teeth onto the dog’s shoulder and tearing into the flesh before the force of its panic caused her to drop off. She moved back, slinking against Steadfast’s side. “I wanted to be the one to bite it! It’s the most fun move you’ve taught me!” She looked back over her shoulder at the other cats gathered, and flashed them a dopey-looking grin. “We were passing by and thought you could use some help against these fleabags!”
Cherish used Snap on Dog 2, dealing 8 damage and costing 7 SP.
