He had not expected to meet the ShadowClan deputy on a herb hunt of all things, but he supposed with so little able-bodied warriors in all the Clans it would only be a matter of time until even deputies would have to be sent out to try and salvage something from these strange lands to save their dying clanmates. He dipped his head in greeting, pelt flushing with embarrassment as he looked down at the pitiful bundles of leaves that laid at his paws. He did not recognise even half of them, but figured at this rate it wouldn't hurt to try other herbs as well. The WindClan warrior knew that he should be on tense terms with a ShadowClan cat, especially the deputy and leader, but he couldn't find it in his heart to despise this stranger for the deaths of his friends and clanmates. | Sablestrike was one of the blessed few that hadn't caught the sickness plaguing the clans. As one of the few able-bodied warriors in his clan Heatherberry had tasked him with finding herbs and bringing them back to restore what little herb stocks his clan still had. She had made him fill his nose with all kinds of different scents that he should be looking out for, and those scents had lead him to a bundle of herbs sitting at the paws of a Windclan cat. Even through the dense scent of herbs Sablestrike was able to distinguish the tom's scent.
For a few moments Sablestrike considered walking in the opposite direction to continue his search, but that could take too long. He was a novice when it came to finding herbs, the only reason he was able to find the Windclanner was because he already had a bundle. If he wandered off now it could take all day to find anything of worth. "You know where I can find more of those?" Sootstorm blinked as Sablestrike asked him where he found the useless herbs at his paws. It didn't feel right to point him in the direction of some herbs that might not even work, but thankfully he had found some poppy seeds and marigold around. They might not work all that well, but at least they were herbs that he had seen in the forest before. "There's some marigold over that way, close to a cluster of ferns. Poppy flowers are that way, in the open field surrounded by beech trees," he replied, pointing vaguely in the directions with his tail. Only after he gave the instructions did he realize how many cluster of ferns and beech trees there were in the area. "Do you need me to accompany you?" | Marigold, poppy seeds... It wasn't what Heatherberry had asked him to search for, but with their herb stores quickly depleting he was sure any herbs at all would be welcomed. Dipping his head in thanks Sablestrike began setting off towards the fern patch the Windclan tom had indicated. The deputy froze however as he was offered... Help? From a Windclan cat? Honestly Sablestrike had been expecting to follow the directions given to him only to be met with empty fields. "I, er... Would be very grateful to receive your help." Accepting the help of a Windclan cat felt like some kind of betrayal to his clan and to the cats that had lost their lives from Nightstar's petty little war, but he couldn't be picky at a time like this. With a guide Sablestrike could quickly acquire the herbs he wanted and return to his clan before sundown, allowing him to return for the herbs that he actually needed. It was too good of an offer to pass up on.
Fixing a golden gaze on his new guide Sablestrike waited to be lead off, black tail lashing behind him. "I suppose I should ask your name. Sootstorm nodded as his help was accepted, and began moving off in the direction that he had come from. "My name is Sootstorm, warrior of WindClan," he introduced himself, while making no reply to Sablestrike's comment. The ShadowClan deputy didn't seem the friendliest of cats, but at least he saw anough reason to accept help when he needed it. Perhaps ShadowClan could crawl out of the hole that the previous leader had dug for them with the help of Sablestrike and Leopardstar.

| As he had expected, Sablestrike had no idea who this tom was. "Tell me then, Sootstorm, why offer me help? Am I walking into some kind of ambush?" No, he was sure nothing of the sort would happen but for some reason there was a nagging feeling at the back of his head. Windclan and Shadowclan weren't on the best of terms, or at the very least they shouldn't be, so why was this Sootstorm offering to help Shadowclan's own deputy? Something about it felt strange to him, but Sablestrike couldn't quite place his paw on what it was. "What's your angle here?" ______________________________________ Art by Copperbeans! "Ambush?" Sootstorm repeated, a look of bewilderment on his face. Where had that come from? Did he really look that aggressive? No, Sablestrike look genuinely puzzled. Was "help" such a foreign concept to ShadowClan warriors? "I have no reason not to help you, seeing as we're all stuck with this sickness and no knowledge of these lands," He finally replied, trying to appear as passive as possible. Please don't start a fight now!

| "I, er-" Stars, what was wrong with him? Sootstorm had given him help without being asked simply because he was a kind cat, why did he feel the need to probe the tom? "I apologize. It's just... Our clans don't have a very hospitable relationship, and receiving help from a Windclanner wasn't something I ever really expected to happen. You can understand why I'd be wary of you." Foolish, he felt utterly foolish in this moment, and perhaps a bit shocked that Windclan wasn't completely full of feather-headed fools. "You raise a fair point, we're all just trying to survive this stars cursed sickness. I appreciate your help, Sootstorm."
How long had it been since he'd conversed with a cat from a different clan? When gatherings came Sablestrike stayed quiet next to the other deputies, and on the journey here he had actively avoided anyone not in Shadowclan. He felt out of his depth when it came to speaking casually with a cat like Sootstorm, so he let the silence stretch on between them for as long as possible. Small talk wasn't his strong suit in the first place, but Sablestrike couldn't help asking another question. "Are we almost there?" If he had something to do with his paws he could focus on that instead of trying to converse with the tom. So that was why. The inability to trust an unfamiliar face, along side the hatred they had been born and raised with, was what steeled the ShadowClan deputy's heart. Sootstorm was not unused to such cats; there was bound to be cats like that in every Clan, his included. He recalled his kithood banter with his littermate, Aspenpaw. Even then, he was already praised for being so eager to sink his claws into a ShadowClanner's throat. Thank StarClan he never listened.
What took him by surprise was the word of thanks that was offered to him. It was as formal as it could be, but even hearing it made his heart warm. That's right, Sablestrike was no fool, he knew when peace was to be appreciated. "Don't sweat it," Sootstorm replied casually, a casual mask hiding his pounding heart.
As he slowed to a stop, Sablestrike asked whether they were close. Sootstorm flicked his tail towards the small rise of the hill ahead of them. "On top of that hill is the patch of marigolds. Over the hill is the field of poppies," He informed the black tom, then picked up his own bundle of herbs. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I must get going," He mewed with a dip of his head, voice slightly muffled by the herbs in his mouth. He had to return to his Clan soon, or they'll start worrying.
