Poppyshine
Poppyshine and Perchstar left in the morning with news that they were visiting the Highstones, but Poppyshine returned that evening, half a day earlier than expected, and alone. She’d had enough time on the walk back to cry all she needed, and then calm down from her emotions. Her mind was still racing and her heart ached terribly, but she was no longer on the verge of shattering like fresh ice over the ponds in leafbare. She walked swiftly to the Willow Branch and leapt up onto it. She turned back and announced louder than she did for typical ceremonies, “All cats of RiverClan, come to me at once!”
Everyone needed to be here. Even the kits that could not participate in what she was going to talk about should at least be aware of what was going on in the clan. Everyone needed to know what happened.

It was just another day full of anxiety, but the second Poppyshine entered the camp her mind was fully panicked. Why is she home early!? Stars something happened! Oh stars where’s Perchstar?? What happened!? Her throat closed up. Sandyshell was already picturing the horrid idea her leader was gone forever, lost or carried down the river as a corpse. The molly’s own clover eyes frantically searched her mother’s matching pair as she scurried to the Willow Branch, bundles of feverfew and goldenrod abandoned on the ground.

Kitespring stepped into the clearing at Poppyshine's voice. She knew of her going with Perchstar, so the fact that she was calling this meeting without Perchstar anywhere to be seen...
What happened to her? Why did she disappear? Where did she go? Was she dead? How did she lose seven lives so quickly? Kitespring's thoughts sprung into a panic once again. Why... just why did this have to happen?

Cranekit stepped out of the nursery warily at the deputy's summon. Clan meeting summons never sounded so urgent and usually didn't require everyone to attend. Something must've happened and it made her cautious.
The kit took a seat at the outer edges of the group and looked up at the deputy. Poppyshine looked frantic and just not as put together as usual. The kit frowned. Poppyshine would explain what happened but before then, the kit's mind raced with possibilities. She also noted the lack of Perchstar anywhere. This didn't look good.

Minksplash had retired for the night, but the sound that came from the willow branch had woken her up immediately. Too much about it was simply... wrong. Those weren't the words usually used, not to mention the fact that it was coming from her mother and not Perchstar like she would have expected. They sounded almost... frantic? It didn't allow for the warrior to feel any better about the situation. Rising from her paws, it wasn't much longer until the russet-ticked warrior was within the crowd. It seemed she was sharing the same feeling as many of those around her, and unease quickly pricked at her paws. She found her sister within the crowd, giving the medicine cat a greeting with a gentle rest of her tail along Sandyshell's back. At least if they were together... they could be okay.

“is it really so wrong to dream?”
In all of the observations the young kit had been partaking in, one of which seemed to be the typical loud call that swept over the majority of the camp on any occasion that deemed more than just a few cats' attention. She'd grown to subconsciously listen for this call, to hear one of two voices sweeping across the camp. That information had been critically passed onto her of the knowledge that it was two particularly important faces who called those summons: Poppyshine and Perchstar. She had done her hardest to store those names in memory, to figure out the difference between the two of them.
That crucial attention seemed to go out the entry to the nursery as one of them called for the Clan to gather. There was no, 'let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather,' it was simply, 'all cats of Riverclan.' Unfortunately it had meant that the young alabaster feline had failed to initially heed the summons, but something had told her to follow the mass-movement of kits and queens alike from the nursery in this instance. None of them all left at the same time without the call of a clan meeting, so surely, this was something important. She found herself gravitating towards a particularly familiar face, the young silver she-cat being of particular interest for the other young clan-member. "...Do you think someone died?" Egretkit's voice came out enough to be heard by those around her, but there was no particular target.
She had yet to witness a death in the customs of their Clan, and it was the only reason she could think of for everyone to gather. Wide, honey-glazed eyes found themselves focusing on the calico upon the branch, her ear half tilted as she studied her face with an almost intense ferocity. It looked like there had been some sadness on it, certainly. Was she right?

Rowanpaw hadn't noticed his mother's return until her voice echoed across camp. Immediately his eyes blinked open, and the doze he'd fallen into was shaken off in seconds. Looking towards the Willow Branch, he saw Poppyshine there, as he expected– she looked shaken, though, and Perchstar seemed entirely absent. Brow furrowing, Rowanpaw tamped down the nerves starting to knit in his chest and rose to his paws. He padded over to sit on the other side of Sandyshell, nodding quietly to both his sisters as he sat. The discomfort and tension in the air seeped through his fur, but Rowanpaw lifted his chin and turned his focus on Poppyshine. If she happened to look his way, he offered a supportive wave of his tail as the rest of the Clan gathered around them.
Rookkit
The deputy was back in camp. Notably, she'd come back without Perchstar. Rookkit's ears wiggled, watching the calico move swiftly through the clearing ascend the Willow Branch. They'd spent the last few hours sitting just outside the entrance to the nursery, doing little other than watching the usual business of camp, leaning against Larkkit. They did feel better today, although tired, but seeing Poppyshine on the Branch always made their stomach do an uncomfortable flip. They were about to ask Lark to retreat back into the den when a stilted summons rang out, demanding all of RiverClan's attention, and those still in the nursery were brushing past them. A distantly-familiar voice made their ears twitch, and out of the corner of their eye, they saw one of the newer kits, asking if somebody had died. Ears flattening, Rookkit pressed silently closer to their brother, unwilling to join the larger crowd but bound by the call to listen and the arresting weight in their stomach.

At the sound of the call, Storkkit lifted her head. She'd only witnessed a few ceremonies, but the summoning seemed different this time. It was more urgent than just a apprentice or warrior ceremony. She could sense something was wrong from the faces of the older cats around her. She stood up, wobbling slightly on her lanky legs. They'd grown quite a bit recently, and she was still getting used to walking on them. She wasn't quite sure where to sit, so she found herself gravitating towards some of the kits she knew. She felt more secure with them near her. One of the other kits started speculating, and her stomach dropped. "I hope not," she murmured in response. "but I don't know what else this could be about." she continued after a moment. She flicked her tail back and forth anxiously. The tension in the air was heavy, and she just wanted Poppyshine to break it with whatever news was coming. The whole clan was here, desperate to know what was happening. Storkkit just wanted to get it over with.

Riverclan Camp
Stormdance’s ears pricked up at Poppyshine’s call, and immediately the edge to Poppyshine’s voice made his heartbeat pick up a pace. That was before he registered that it was Poppyshine calling the meeting, not Perchstar, and their leader was nowhere to be seen. Hadn’t she left with Poppyshine just that morning to go to Highstones? For Poppyshine to come back this early, with no Perchstar with her… Something must be very wrong. Stormdance’s mouth felt dry as he joined the gathering crowd.
His mind flew through possibilities, wondering what could’ve gone wrong. He thought of seeing Perchstar lose a life a few moons prior, and his claws dug into the dirt. She still had plenty of lives left, didn’t she? That’s what Poppyshine had told him. She couldn’t have lost all of them so quickly, surely… Stormdance took a steadying breath, pushing his anxiety at bay and just tried to wait for Poppyshine’s announcement. Despite himself, his tail kept twitching nervously.
Sunkit
Riverclan Camp
Sunkit had been on his way to the Elder’s den when the call went up. His ears twitched as he swiveled his head to see Poppyshine up on the branch. The call was for all the cats of the clan, which seemed unusual, and Sunkit wondered where Perchstar was. Abandoning his earlier task of going to bother Twistpool, Sunkit approached the crowd and sat off to the side, close to the nursery, where he could get a good look without being lost in the press of larger cats that were gathering. He turned his head and saw Rookkit and Larkkit still sitting by the nursery, and he found himself shuffling closer to them. He didn't quite sit beside them, but he sat close, and he offered a brief little smile before he turned his head back to watch Poppyshine

Darkpaw had been grooming himself in a patch of sunshine outside the apprentice's den when Poppyshine's call brought his attention to the Willow Branch.All of RiverClan? Darkpaw thought, shaking out his pelt as he padded closer to listen. Even the kits and elders? Darkpaw's eyes automatically scanned the growing crowd of cats, searching for Toadpaw. The wiry tom was probably scared out of his wits hearing Poppyshine sound so worried.
Wait...where's Perchstar? Darkpaw's heart pounded in fear. The pair of cats had left for Highstones earlier that same day, but...
A flurry of thoughts pounded in Darkpaw's mind, as dark and threatening as the river nearby. What had happened to Perchstar?

Larkkit’s eyes narrowed as the deputy’s call urged cats to gather. He did not have to look at his sibling to know that Rookkit was just as confused. They pressed back against their sibling in turn when some callous kit they shared the nursery with whispered to another. Upon glancing around, Larkkit had to guess that if a cat had died, it would be Perchstar, who was not present. But leaders were supposed to reawaken after they died, yes? He did not think that their leader had lost all of her lives before they were born, but he supposed he didn’t know how many she had in the first place. Regardless, Larkkit’s tail brushed over Rookkit’s back. He focused on Poppyshine at the branch, stubbornly not looking towards Sunkit who had inched closer to them.
Twistpool
Twistpool walked out of the elder’s den when the clan was summoned. His eyes narrowed upon seeing the deputy at the Willow Branch. The deputy had never really felt much of a leader to the elder, and she was not seeming so even now. His eyes swept around for their actual leader, and was met with similar confusion to the cats surrounding him: Perchstar was not here. He was not a fan of the leader, but his stomach did still do an odd flip. He had experienced something like this before. Memories of Ivystar filled his mind before he quickly pushed that all away. It was unlikely that an incident such as Ivystar’s death had occurred…even still, he moved closer to Sunkit who neared the nursery, and his eyes flicked around for any sign of trouble.
Poppyshine
Poppyshine watched her fellow clanmates gather around her. Her heart ached as she knew that she was going to have to explain everything to her poor clan. The urge to cry again bubbled in her chest, but she shoved it down and away. There would be time for that later. She could not fall apart in front of her clan. She had fallen apart enough over the past half-year.
“RiverClan,” she began, in a voice that she hoped was steady, “as many of your know, Perchstar and I left to the Highstones early this morning. When we arrived at the Thunderpath, I crossed first and Perchstar followed behind me but-“ Her voice caught in her throat and she swallowed it down. “But a monster surprised us and she was struck. Unlike usual monster attacks, this one stopped and twolegs emerged from its belly, where they took her into the monster and they ran off. It escaped so quickly that I did not even have time to react.”
Poppyshine looked steadily over her clan, giving them a moment to process the information, before he continued. “Perchstar still has plenty of lives left, so I know that wherever the twolegs have taken her, she will reawaken. It seems our time dealing with the twolegs is not yet finished. While we do not know exactly where she was taken, we are going to do all we can to locate her.”
Her eyes swept over her clanmates. She’d had some ideas for how to deal with the situation at hand, but there was still plenty of things to attend to. “Some search parties are going to be organized to search for her immediately. Apprentices and warriors that remain with regular duties, you are also to keep your nose out for any sign of Perchstar, should she return on her own. For the moment, I want to meet with the following cats in the leader’s den: Sandyshell, Kitespring, Stormdance, and Rowanpaw.”
Poppyshine allowed her words to hang in the air for just a moment before she dropped down from the Willow Branch. Should anyone have questions or need to speak with her, they could catch her before going to the leader’s den; otherwise, it would have to wait until after she’d spoken with her called-for cats.

Perchstar has been killed by a monster. The medicine cat leaned over and faced the ground, trying to control her sparse breathing. She’s dead. Gone. Taken. She tried to fight her nerves, but her tan tabby body helplessly shook against her sister’s tail. Frustration seeped into her panic attack. Be calm for Starclan’s sake! Perchstar will be fine and you’re freaking out over nothing! Completely unprofessional! Sandyshell knew every single cats’ eyes were on her, disapproving or disgusted. What an irrational nightmare she forced herself into.
❖ Brookstonewas left reeling after the news that Poppyshine had dropped on the clan. The deputy and the leader had left early that morning and headed to Highstones to visit the Moonstone. She was alarmed when Poppyshine had returned much earlier than expected, leaderless. It had taken all of the tabby warrior's will not to panic and she had slowly made her way over to where her clanmates were gathering once Poppyshine had called for an urgent meeting. What she told them had chilled Brook to her core. Perchstar was missing after being hit by a monster. She had lost a life and twolegs had snatched her up without hesitation. Their leader was missing and they had to pray to Starclan that they could find her soon. Brookstone was determined to help in any and every way she could. ღ
❖ Therecent problems the forest had with twolegs were still fresh in the minds of many. She still hadn't forgiven those furless beasts for having taken away half of her clanmates with no remorse—she doubted she ever would forgive such creatures. Her thoughts were pushed aside as a few cats were called to the leader's den. She wondered what they would be discussing there. For the moment, there wasn't much she could do. Patrols would be sent out to help search for Perchstar but she wasn't sure when. Perhaps she would be discussing that with those she had beckoned into the den? Brookstone was itching to search for the leader but quickly calmed her frayed nerves. She still had duties to perform. The clan had to keep running, leaderless or not. ღ

As Poppyshine spoke, Kitespring made sure to listen thoroughly. Perchstar was in fact missing, it seemed, but she should still be alive. Just... yeah. Their leader was captured by the Twolegs. What in the world could go wrong?
When Poppyshine called Kitespring into the leader's den, Kitespring quickly followed. It seemed like she wanted to talk with her, Sandyshell, Rowanpaw, and Stormdance right now. She wasn't sure why, but she'd listen. She was the de facto leader now, and also someone Kitespring trusted with her life. Stepping into the leader's den, she wondered what Poppyshine had to say to them.

As Poppyshine delivered the news, Stormdance’s eyes went wide and his head reeled. It was worse than he could’ve imagined. Perchstar, losing a life in such a violent manner, and then stolen by twolegs. His mouth went dry and he dug his claws into the soft earth beneath him as a mixture of horror and anger rolled through him. When were the twolegs going to leave their clan alone? So many of their clanmates had been stolen away over the moons, and now this? Their leader. Perchstar. His chest ached. He cared deeply for Perchstar, not only as his leader, but as a cat. He could not imagine Riverclan without her.
He shook himself and focused his gaze on Poppyshine again. Poor Poppyshine; she’d already been through so much recently, to have even more settled onto her shoulders… He resolved to do anything he could to support her right now. To his surprise, she finished her announcement with a call of his name. He took a deep breath and pushed back the emotions threatening to overwhelm him. He needed to be strong.
He followed Poppyshine into the leader’s den, noting absently that he’d never been inside the den before. It felt wrong to do so now, but he ignored the feeling in favor of focusing completely on Poppyshine.

Rowanpaw’s attention was fixed on Poppyshine as she began to speak. The tension in the air was unmistakable, but clearly not unreasonable: their leader had been crushed by a monster, dead before it even got its paws off her. And the twolegs dwelling within, they’d crawled out just to take away her body. The slow tightening in his chest grew heavy all at once. Do they have nothing better to do than torment us?
Jaw tightening, he forced himself to listen as his mother continued. Regular duties would continue, alongside special patrols whose only objective was to look for signs of her. Subconsciously, he adjusted his posture. Whether he was ready or not, he had a feeling he would be a warrior soon; and whether he was or wasn’t, he would be do all he could.
A little start went through him when his name was called among others more reputable, though Rowanpaw got to his paws quickly despite his surprise. But as he was standing, Sandyshell was doubling over beside him. Glancing at Minksplash, he leaned down, nosing his sister’s shoulder gently. “Mama wants us. Come with me,” he mewed softly, pressing his nose into her fur a little firmer. And again, nudging her until she would look up, if not stand. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Kitespring and Stormdance filtering into the den. “Perchstar will be alright, I am sure of it. Poppyshine needs us now, though.” He couldn't ignore his own fear thick in his lungs, but... Rowanpaw looked between Sandyshell and the den they'd been summoned to. He didn't see an opportunity to address it.
With another press against his sister, Rowanpaw stepped away from her side, padding only a few steps to wait for her to join him. When she would follow, he would lead them to joining the group forming within Perchstar’s den.
