Making friends [closed patrol]

"Ravenpaw!" Mudfoot meowed loudly, walking through the Carrionplace. Great StarClan, he'd never realized how big it really was and padding next to Smokepaw, he prayed that the apprentice was still alright. Where could she have possibly run off too?

When Mudfoot turned to go searching for Ravenpaw, Smokepaw quickly fell in step next to the older warrior. Panic seized in his chest, worried that she could get hurt. He had heard tale of rats and while one was often not a problem for a warrior - they could come in swarms and easily take down a patrol. Why had she wandered off by herself? "Ravenpaw?" he called out, hoping to help. They had been denmates as kits - even if it seemed they weren't on the best of terms now, he still cared for her. He prayed to StarClan that she would be safe.

Ravenpaw was deaf to the shouts in the distance, down low and focused on a small creature scurrying across the mud, her claws flexing eagerly in and out. There was a lizard not too far off and she was determined to get it. Pawstep after pawstep, the she-cat crept closer and - when finally ready - made a leap for it. The prey was quick to see her coming, but her leap was far too might. It's tail was pinned by her claw and she pulled it in, quickly skidding through the dirt and ending it's life with a swift bite to the neck.

It was totally ungraceful and she had completely dirtied her pelt from belly to tail, but what did that matter. "I caught it! I caught it!" She jumped back on her feet, running back towards the area from which she'd came - or she thought she did anyways, not noticing the scurry of dark shapes following her.

Trying with the best of his ability to sniff out the apprentice or spot any sort of movement, the tom had no success and was starting to get even more worried. Please be alright, please be alright, Mudfoot prayed over and over.

"Ravenpaw?" Smokepaw called out again, fear prickling at his fur. They were getting deep in the Carrion place now and still there was no sign of his denmate. He glanced over at the warrior, his heart sinking when he saw how worried the warrior was. Where could she be? Why had she run off? He could only pray that she was alright as well, his ears perked as he tasted the air for any traces of Ravenpaw.

Over the sharp stench of Carrionplace, and the overwhelming smell of fresh lizard filling her nose, it was a miracle at all that she'd managed to pick up the slightest sign of her denmate on the cool breeze. "Smokepaw!" The black she-cat called, her voice muffled through the prey in her jaws. "Guess what I go-" A dark shape leaped out of nowhere, making a dive for her ankle and biting her down on the leg. The apprenticed cried suddenly, shaking the thing off as a swarm suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

After what felt like ages of searching, Mudfoot finally picked out Ravenpaw's scent among everything else although it was extremely faint.

Suddenly, before he was able to start tracking the apprentice, her cry rung out into the air and she was closer than he'd thought. Flicking his tail to Smokepaw for him to follow, Mudfoot raced towards where her voice had come from. "Ravenpaw!" the tom meowed in panic, skidding to a halt a few foxlengths away from the apprentice who was now being swarmed by rats.

Where in the world had they come from? There were tons of the little beasts and thinking fast, there was only one solution. He'd have to fight them off. Although Ravenpaw hadn't been the nicest cat, she was still his clanmate and he'd never forgive himself if he lost an apprentice on a patrol.

Letting out a yowl to get some of the rats attention, Mudfoot bared his teeth and unsheathed his claws. "Come on Foxhearts!" he hissed, raising his hackles. A couple rats couldn't control themselves and sure enough, they started scurrying towards him, long front fangs showing.

Swinging a paw at the first rat, he hit it hard and it went flying into a pile of Twoleg garbage with a thud. Being protective of his clan, Mudfoot would teach these rats a lesson, even if he had to kill each and everyone of them. No one messed with ShadowClan, no one!

Smokepaw's ears perked when he heard Ravenpaw's voice, relief flooding though him as he quickly followed Mudfoot. But the moment he heard her cry out in pain and he saw the rats swarming over her, he came to a stop. His eyes widen as his breath quicken, panic rising in his chest at the sight. Th-there was so many! His paws were frozen to the ground as Mudfoot yowled to gather some of their attention but his eyes remained fixed on those who still swarmed the mostly black apprentice.

Finally, he shot forward in a sudden burst of speed and slashed at one of the rats that still clung to his denmate letting out a sharp, but clearly terrified hiss. His fur stood on edge as he did his best to free Ravenpaw from under the swarm that threaten to consume her and fight down the fear that threaten to consume him. He didn't care how much Ravenpaw was rude to him - she was still his friend and he couldn't bare to see her being attacked like this.
