Subject: Hunting Herbs [Hollypaw] Mon 11 Nov 2024 - 13:26
Wolfstar padded alongside Hollypaw as they made their way to the great ridge. Today's agenda was looking for herbs, and finding them on Skyclan soil would help reinforce what the young medicine cat apprentice already knew. Wolfstar was limited in what she could teach him, but even so she would do what she could to support Hollypaw's path to becoming a medicine cat.
"Hopefully it's still early enough in the seasons that we can get a good haul out here." Wolfstar mewed. "Cobwebs, traveling herbs... We ought to stock up on coltsfoot and tansy if we can find them as well. Catmint too... Though that's a bit rarer on this side of the fence."

Hollypaw followed Wolfstar to the Great Ridge to gather herbs for the upcoming leafbare. That sounded good to him. SkyClan needed the right herbs to stay healthy, and leaf-bare was going to be rough if they didn't have the chance to stock up. Wolfstar seemed strong, yet calm. Hollypaw wished he could have been the same.
"Is it... lonely, being SkyClan's leader?" he asked. Perhaps she felt lonely in her position too, that she was separated from her clanmates due to her position. Hollypaw understood the feeling all too well - he didn't hunt or fight, he slept in his own den, and he felt emotionally distant from many things that normal cats talked about.
He looked inside a rotting log for cobwebs, pulling a couple of them from the crevices. "I got some cobwebs," he said, turning back to Wolfstar.

Lonely? She could imagine being a medicine cat was, far more so than being leader or deputy. Still... Wolfstar nodded at Hollypaw's question. "Sometimes it is, yeah. Clanmates start to look at you as a leader first, rather than just a clanmate. And if there's ever conflict within the clan, you're expected to solve it. Not to just offer a willing ear or a shoulder to lean on. I think some of my friendships had started to change even when I was still deputy, though I try hard to maintain them." She mewed, "The younger cats will never know me as anything but Wolfstar, I expect. And she's a different cat than Wolfblossom was." Lighttail, the former Shadowclanner, had become one of her best friends. And there was Stormwatcher who was like a younger brother to her. But she'd grown more distant from some of the cats who had once been her companions - even those when she'd been a newly-named deputy. And then there was her relationship with her own sister Trufflesnap, forever soured and tainted by the change in rank.
"My mother always said that being a medicine cat was the most isolating of the leadership positions. I'm not sure if that's quite true for everyone, or if that was her own experience talking. Smokepetal and Thymelight were well-liked and had lots of friends in the clan. Hemlockfox was more of a loner, but he was always close-knit with his siblings before he left to Windclan." His loss still stung, even in keeping semi-regular contact with the medicine cat. Not enough contact, but at least it was something.
Something bright caught the leader's attention and she moved toward it. "There's some daisy here. Can you remember what it does?" She called to the apprentice, beckoning him over with her tail. He'd found cobwebs - always useful, always needed.
"It takes more work, I think. And maybe it depends on the type of cat that's come into the role of medicine cat too... But I think you'll do alright. Getting out of your shell and actually getting to know your clanmates can be difficult sometimes, more when there's a disparity in rank between them. But it's doable."
