hunting and herbs [closed]

Smallbean slumped around camp, readying himself to go out on the next patrol. He'd been going on patrols as much as he could lately, mainly as a distraction. His legs had already begun to grow tired from constantly being on his feet all day, but he didn't really care. He couldn't be in camp because it gave him too much time to think; too much time to mourn Larkflight. He swept his gaze across camp, trying to find a patrol to join. It seemed as though all of the patrols had already gone out. With a sigh, he looked around camp again to find any cats that didn't look too busy he could bring on patrol with him. He spotted Downpaw and reluctantly walked to him. "Hey, uh- D-Downpaw? W-would you mind going on a p-patrol with me?" He paused and saw Softpaw nearby. "S-Softpaw c-can come as well, if you w-want her t-to."

Downpaw had been sitting down, indulging in the indignity of boredom. With nothing to do, he simply watched the happenings of camp, eyeing specific cats in general. He kept a close on the leader, as well as his mate, Dappleshine, Ploverpuddle, and Zinnia. Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by a small voice. Smallbean. "Patrol? Tsk, fine, sure." He mumbled, getting up and stretching his sandy ginger legs. Looking over to Softpaw, he grinned and waved her over. "Hey, Softy! Wanna come stretch your paws?"

Looking up, the tom's littermate blinked at him and nodded, padding over to the duo. "Sure, I'm free. Aspenheart's with Morningdove, so I may as well make myself useful. Hi, Smallbean." Turning, she softly meowed a greeting to her kin, Goldengale's grandkit. "To the moors?" Softpaw asked, whiskers quivering at the thought of a hunt.

(OOC: I guess the predator will be "triggered" next turn? If you want me to be the predator i can, i think it'd be confusing for you to rp 2 cats and a predator))


Smallbean nodded toward the two and headed toward the camp entrance. It felt... odd, leading a patrol for once. He always remembered someone else taking lead. What if he did something wrong? He look over his shoulder to make sure the patrol was still following him. He really wanted to let Downpaw take the lead, but he knew apprentices shouldn't lead patrols. Keeping his attention ahead, he tried to determine where would be a god spot to start hunting. He saw a spot on the moor with many ridges. There was a thin patch of trees and bushes nearby as well, so maybe Softpaw could find some herbs if Aspenheart currently needed any. "That looks like a g-good place t-to hunt, d-don't you think?" He asked, looking over his shoulder.

He continued forward, and sniffed the air, quickly picking up a strong scent of rabbit. Once he saw the creature, he became very still and moved slowly until he was close to it. After building up some energy, he rushed toward the rabbit and bit it's neck, quickly finishing his catch. He carried it back to where the patrol split up and hid it for later.

Softpaw gave Smallbean an encouraging nod, feeling his nervousness. It must be odd, leading a patrol with an apprentice who is older than you, she mused. Downpaw had been an apprentice and a kit longer than usual, waiting for Softpaw herself to get her promotion. It can't be too far away now.. She thought. Aspenheart praised her often, and it couldn't be long before he would give her her full name. Dashing ahead, she nibbled a stalk of yarrow, happy to have already found some herbs.

Downpaw had marched on, completely unaware of the sense of unnerve coming from the leader of the patrol. His focus was on a hare he'd seen. With a swift leap, he landed just besie it, hissing as it ran away. He was about to pursue it once he looked up, noticing a rustle of leaves beside Softpaw, and yowled in alarm, smelling the scent of a predator. "Softpaw, look out! Goose!"

Smallbean saw that the two apprentices were still off hunting, meaning he could probably get another catch and return if he was quick enough. It was relatively easy to catch rabbits, after all. He ventured off once more, his nose in the air like he had previously done only a few moments ago. Like he had expected, the scent of rabbit wafted through the air, leading to the thin patch of trees. He crouched down, knowing the rabbit was nearby. Toning out everything else, he followed the scent around a tree and saw the rabbit eating berries from a bush. He prepared himself to attack, but the rabbit looked toward him and scampered away. 'How did it know i was here? Perhaps...' The small tom looked around behind him, and sure enough, a few fox-lengths away stood a large, white goose.

It was early morning, the perfect time for finding food. The goose had been wandering into unfamiliar territory lately, trying to find more food, as the spots it frequented most seemed to have been picked clean before it arrived there. So today's mission was to find new places to gather food. It set off, Waddling across the moors, almost desperately trying to find a new spot to feed. The moors were almost always empty anyways, as it was a wide open spot that most other birds got to first; it had to find a place that could be somewhat hard to get to. It wasn't long until it waddled upon a small patch of trees and bushes. Perfect! This was a great place to look for food. It pushed through the bushes to find that there was something... not quite right. It heard rustling, but not of small animals. It looked around and found a cat. This goose had dealt with cats before, and they were no fun. It quickly made it's attack, thrusting it's beak into the cat's side. That should keep it away, right?

Smallbean stood frozen, unable to move. He'd never encountered an enemy that wasn't a cat, despite how common fox and badger attacks were. The fact that it was a bird scared him even more. He shrunk away as the goose charged at him, wincing and letting out a yelp as it jabbed it's beak into his ribcage. The force of it knocked him to the ground and took the breath out of him. He laid on the ground for a moment, desperately trying to catch his breath. When he could breath again, He called out into the air "D-Downpaw! I need your help! Th-there's a g-goose!" How weak of him, having to call for an apprentice to help him. He was supposed to be the stronger one, the one who could keep the patrol safe. But he obviously couldn't, his body felt so weak already. But he had to at least try. With a yowl, he lashed out of the goose, tearing his claws down it's side.

"Why are there so many geese?!" The ginger furred tom hissed, bounding forward. Slamming head first into the goose, he whirled around, nimbly ducking under it before raking his claws down its back. "Go away, you oversized pidgeon!"

Softpaw shrieked with utter horror, and dashed off, coming back a heartbeat later with jaws full of cobwebs. She sat back, ready to spring if absolutely needed, waiting for them to deal with the horrible creature. She couldn't fight, but she could heal Smallbean and Downpaw once the fight was over.

Never had Smallbean felt so relieved than when he saw Downpaw running his way, with a worried Softpaw behind. Softpaw disappeared withing moments of arriving, probably to get herbs. Turning his attention back to the goose, he narrowed his eyes. Though he didn't feel very determined, he knew he couldn't let Downpaw or Softpaw get seriously injured. But it seemed like Downpaw was handling himself well. He was, after all, older than him. Rising up on his haunches, Smallbean struggled to be tall enough, but somehow managed to claw at the goose's face.

The goose honked in surprise when another cat joined in on the battle. It rolled it's eyes with annoyance. 'Will i ever get a break?' Now it had to deal with two cats! All it wanted was to find some food, but it seemed as though it always ran into some sort of trouble. It defended itself the best it could, but unlike cats it couldn't dodge attacks very easily. Finally having enough, the goose honked again an slammed it's wing into one of the cats.

Goose used Wing bluff on Downpaw, dealing 10 HP each time it hits and costing -20 each time it hits. It will only hit once.

Softpaw ran back as fast as she could, and watched in a dazed horror as the goose attacked her *brother*. "No! Leave him alone!" She yelped, charging towards the creature, throwing her paws helplessly at it, looking like a kit than a fearsome foe. Immediately, she backed up, eyes wide, fear in her posture. Her ears slicked back, and her legs shook. Uh oh...

Downpaw was dumbfounded as Softpaw ran towards the goose and swatted at it. "What are you doing, mouse-brain? You're gonna get yourself killed!" He shrieked, jumping in front of her and aiming an unsheathed paw at the goose's eyes. The goose tried to dodge, but instead, made him land a devastating blow to the neck, killing it. "Don't you ever do that again, ever." He hissed, swiveling around to face her.

Unflinching, Softpaw padded gently over to Downpaw, inspecting a trickle of blood down his pelt. "you're bleeding. Stay still." Softpaw instructed, grabbing a wad of cobwebs as she pressed it to his wound. "You'll be fine, Smallbean, how are you feeling?" She asked, turning to face the tom.

Smallbean jumped back when the goose attacked again, this time hitting Downpaw. He rushed forward to help, only to dodge back as Softpaw came sprinting toward the goose. "H-hey! You're gonna hurt yourself!" He cried. Surprisingly, Softpaw landed a decent hit on the goose, and a moment later Downpaw finished it off. He looked over to see Softpaw checking Downpaw over for injuries before applying some kind of herb to it. It wasn't long until she faced him, asking him if he was okay. "Yeah, i'm f-fine, no major w-wounds." He replied. " I think we should get back to camp, it's already been a long day, and i'm sure we're all tired." He walked over to where the prey was hidden and picked up as much of it as he could carry before leading the way back to camp.
