Cindersky
I loved you...
She was reciting the words she had to say even before her paws grazed the top of the Willow Branch as she hauled herself up. The last one she had done was moons ago, and in truth, she expected this to be moons further away. Murkyriver and Dovetails kits, perhaps. They were the only kits there were. She certainly did not expect her own, though not by blood, to be preened and ready to present himself to the clan. She had spent hours working that little pelt of his.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting!" She called, though kept her attention on the nursery for the emergence of the little kitten that called her 'mother'.
Burnetkit was groomed to perfection. Patiently, he waited at the boundary of the nursery as instructed by his mother before she left to call the meeting. He was a good kit and followed her instructions diligently. Finally, she called his name forward and he bounded out proudly into the waiting clan and approached the branch that hung over the camp to his waiting mother. His head was held up and he wore a huge smile across his face that he shared with every cat he passed. The kit nearly bounced all the way to his spot until he came to a gentle stop, gazing up to his mother.
She shuffled on her paws, heart swelling with pride and boundless love as the tomkit walked himself over. Every cat, he gave a smile. So full of kindness, of joy and warmth. She blinked slowly down at him, and then turned her voice outward.
"Burnetkit," She began, struggling to keep the endless purr from her voice. "You have reached the age of six moons, and the time has come for you to become an apprentice. From this day forward, until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Burnetpaw."
Her cheeks ached from smiling. Oh, perhaps it wasn't very 'deputy-like' to be beaming like a mouse-brain in the middle of an apprentice ceremony. But he had come so far. From a scared, blood-stained mewling newborn at the river, to this little ray of sunshine. He needed a good mentor, someone loyal and good who would teach him well. She knew just the cat, fixing her eyes on the pale, fluffy molly ahead of her.
"Your mentor will be Swandive," She meowed. "Swandive is a steadfast cat, who's loyalty is as rooted as the oldest tree. She will teach you well and thoroughly, and I have full faith that together, she will shape you to be one of the best RiverClan warriors that you could possibly be."
Swandive was among the crowd when Cindersky called the clan meeting. One of the kits was to be named, and the deputy was grinning so hard Swandive thought her face might split. Swandive couldn't help a small smile of her own, Cindersky's excitement was almost infectious.
The pale warrior had not expected to hear her name called, dipping her head to the deputy. "I'll do my best, Cindersky." She knew little of the deputy's adopted kit, but she'd meant that. If Burnetpaw disappeared like Lightningpaw had... Swandive gave her head a shake and pushed the thought from her mind, padding toward the newly named apprentice.
"Hi, Burnetpaw," Swandive mewed, lightly touching the apprentice's nose with her own, "You can get a nest set up in the apprentice's den, we'll start training bright and early tomorrow."
