Boogers and all (open)

Sitting beside the camp entrance with his short tail tucked neatly under his large paws, the newly named Bugpaw sat in silence, enjoying the fall breeze that blew through the grass. Sniffling and letting out a somewhat suppressed cough, he hoped that his lingering illness wouldn't deter cats from joining him on a patrol. He hadn't gotten much time out of the camp yet and hoped to stretch his legs, that was, if anyone dared to join him.

Larchbreeze had spent a good few minutes longer than usual grooming his multicolored pelt this morning in preparation to double his mentor duties. Sickness or not, Bugpaw was his apprentice, and by the stars, he was going to do his best to train the little guy. Any opinions, he could keep to himself. He'd get on Rapidfire's good side yet. The WindClan warrior strolled out to see his apprentice sitting by the entrance to camp. He offered a warm smile. "Hey, Bugpaw," he said, keeping his tone friendly. "Ready to go and do some hunting? Are you waiting for anyone in particular?"

"Hey, you two!" Laurelriver mewed.

The calico she-cat padded towards the mentor-apprentice duo of Larchbreeze and Bugpaw. "Mind if I join you on a hunt?" Moldpaw was still recovering from her injuries - Leopardwind had told her to take care of his siblings when he left, but there wasn't much she could do to help her right now. And Laurelriver could catch prey for the clan while she healed.

He should've expected his mentor of all cats to want to join him but for some reason he had been expected someone else, though he wasn't quite sure who exactly. Giving the older tom a respectful dip of his head and a shy smile, he stood up and gave his fuzzy pelt a shake, trying his best not to throw the boogers that had been dripping down his nose everywhere.

"I'm ready and nope, not waiting for anyone in particular," the apprentice mewed. Before they were able to leave, Laurelriver's voice called to the pair and he greeted the warrior with another dip off his head. "You're more than welcome to join us," Bugpaw spoke happily, glad his clanmates wanted to spend time with him. He wasn't exactly a fan-favorite with his odd enjoyments such as collecting insects, but he always hoped his general friendliness would make up for his shortcomings.

Larchbreeze did not grimace at the snot hanging down from his apprentice's nose. He almost wanted to point it out so that Bugpaw could fix it, but would that be more or less embarrassing than pretending he didn't notice it? If he looked for one more second he might vomit, so instead he offered a smile and then looked away at the other cat who had joined them. One of the younger warriors, around Leopardwind and Falconpaw's age. Her name was... Laurel... something? Oh, right, Laurelriver. The smile on the calico tom's face grew sweeter as he met her gaze. "We definitely don't mind," he assured her, golden eyes glimmering. "More company is nice, especially from a cat as easy on the eyes as you are. Well, then, let's head out. This morning isn't going to enjoy itself." He flicked his tail, then turned to go out of camp, leading Bugpaw along behind him. It wouldn't be so bad to have his second apprentice along with him, if he could show off to a nice she-cat how good of a mentor he was. And well, worst case scenario, it was a gorgeous day outside. Why not enjoy himself on a patrol?

Walking across the moors, it didn't take Larchbreeze long to catch the scent of prey on the cool morning wind. He waved his tail once, indicating to his patrolmates that he was going off to hunt real quick. Obviously it wouldn't take him long--hunting was one of his best skills. Sharp eyes narrowed until they caught sight of two gray ears popping up just above the long grass. Cautiously he stalked forward, his ears pinned back in concentration, his white paws making no sound on the soft soil beneath them. Then, when he judged that he'd gotten close enough that he could make a run for it, he broke into a sudden sprint.

Of course, he caught it easily. The rabbit didn't even have time to squeak when Larchbreeze bore down on it, snapping it up in his jaws and ending its life with a swift bite. A flare of pride licked at his heart, warming him up more than the leaf-fall sun did. Impressive, Larchbreeze. You've still got it. A quick glance upward was all the thanks he gave StarClan before trotting back to Bugpaw and Laurelriver, eyes glimmering. "Sorry, got distracted. Gotta take prey where you can get it, y'know?"

Laurelriver giggled at Larchbreeze's comment. "I could say the same about you," she said, before following him on the patrol. Stars, she almost forgot how much fun flirting was. It made her feel amazing, the banter and playful chirping and everything.

As Larchbreeze broke away to hunt, Laurelriver turned to Bugpaw to talk with him. "How is Larchbreeze as a mentor, by the way?" she asked. "Asking for a friend." Perhaps that would tell her a lot more about Larchbreeze than asking him herself could.

After Bugpaw's response, Larchbreeze quickly returned back with a rabbit in his jaws. "We can turn this into a hunting patrol, if you really want," she mewed, playfully smiling back. "But I'd also love to get to know you a little more." She stepped closer to the calico tabby, her flirtatious smile growing wider and wider until-

The wind breeze changed, and fresh rabbit scent hit Laurelriver's nose. "Smells like my chance to match you," she whispered, waving her tail before slipping down into her hunter's crouch. Perhaps it would make Larchbreeze anxious for her to continue, though, so it could be better than it seemed at first.

Hiding in the tall grass, she stalked it until she was close enough to chase it down. The rabbit didn't stand a chance, and Laurelriver was able to easily sink her teeth into it. Thank you, StarClan, she thought, before bringing it back. "Ta-da!" she said, her smile breaking past the rabbit she had in her jaws. "How'd I do?"

Sniffling and pawing at his face in attempts to rid himself of the boogers that dripped down his maw, he hastily trotted after the patrol to catch up. The two of them seemed fairly cheery with one another and it brought the young tom joy to get to hang out with his clanmates. Ever since he was a kit he hadn't had many close friends, but it seemed like he'd been making more and more of them as he got older.

Ear's perking at Laurelriver's response as he watched his mentor veer from the group, he couldn't help but let out a happy little chirp. "He's been the best! He knows a lot and is a really good hunter," the cream colored apprentice purred in reply to her inquiry. He wasn't quite sure why she seemed so interested in his mentor of all cats, but had no problem telling her about how cool of a warrior he was. Before he was able to say anything else, Larchbreeze returned back with a rabbit in his jaws and before could comment on the tom's successful kill, the she-cat had strayed from the group to catch some prey of her own. Standing beside Larchbreeze, the scent of rabbit grew overwhelming in the air and he wondered if his mentor had stirred up a family from their burrow nearby.

Sure enough, Laurelriver returned with her share and the apprentice's paws itched with excitement as he began to kneed at the dirt below. "Great job! Now it's my turn!" Bugpaw exclaimed happily before bounding off through the tall grass. Following the scent, he crouched low to the ground and made sure to keep his tail tucked. Stalking forward, it wasn't long before he caught sight of a smaller rabbit and he slowed his pace. Staying as quiet as possible, he bunched up his haunches and with a swift spring to his step, leaped forward.

Having been too eager, he fell right behind the rabbit and before he was able to raise his paws to claw at it, it leapt away. The apprentice gave chase for a few moments, but as he grew further and further from the patrol, he slowed his pace. It wasn't worth the risk of leaving the safety of the others and he'd have to try again later.

"Darn... it," he said through huffs and puffs as he returned back to Larchbreeze's side, trying to catch his breath. Being sick for so long had really taken it out of him.

Bugpaw attempted to catch a rabbit and was... not successful.
