Subject: darling, everything's on fire (c) Mon 23 Sep 2024 - 14:15
Life in ShadowClan had received so many upsets lately that it felt as if the ground shook beneath her whenever she tried to find stability. Some had been good changes--like Fishpaw joining the Clan, or the new addition of Bubblebeam as a pleasant surprise. However, there had also been... problems. First and foremost of which was Wolfpaw's illness. Hedgepaw tried her hardest to move past the terror she had experienced, and to keep moving forward with her own progress as an apprentice, all the while hoping for her brother's swift recovery. She dwelled on it as little as possible. Images emerged in her dreams, blurry shapes and shrieks and chunks of fur, but she closed her eyes harder to will them away. In the light of the moon when she awoke, everything was okay. Camp was still safe. Everyone else wasn't scary. She still had Mamma, still had Hawkmist, Quillsplash, Fishpaw, Fernpaw, even Bubblebeam, and of course Silverhawk. Big brother Silver. He had always been a figure of stability and peace in her life. He always knew what to do. He would always be there for her.
After returning from a particularly exhausting patrol, Hedgepaw dropped the fresh-kill she'd caught in the pile, and was going to take a piece to eat--but she glanced around before doing so, and became distracted by seeing Silverhawk not far away talking with someone. She could not see the cat's face, but from the fluffy gray tail and the soft paws, she judged that it must have been Bubblebeam. What surprised her though was not their conversation, but the warm smile she saw on her brother's face. Normally that smile was reserved for his family and Hawkmist. He had many smiles--some bigger, some smaller--but she'd never seen him look at anyone else like that. Hedgepaw tilted her head to the side, considering the scene before her. Silverhawk had been one of the cats who knew Bubblebeam as a friend and invited her to ShadowClan, so it made sense that he would smile at her like that. Still, she couldn't deny the mixture of curiosity and longing swirling up inside her. What made the two of them such good friends? And... was it really a friendship, or something stronger? She didn't know much about the mate kind of love, having not seen much of it through first-paw experience, but she had occasionally wondered whether Silverhawk would ever find himself a mate. He seemed so content to simply give different smiles to most Clanmates, other than his family and Hawkmist (who might as well have been an honorary family member). Did he really see Bubblebeam as a friend? Somewhere in the back of her mind, she felt a sudden desire that was difficult to deny. If Silverhawk did choose a nice she-cat, then that would mean Hedgepaw would have an older sister. She wanted all the cats she loved to be close and bonded in ways that could not be severed. She wanted them all to be as close to her as she was to them. So... the idea of Bubblebeam officially being a member of the family seemed suddenly very appealing indeed.
Regardless of all the strange cavalcade of thoughts, though, mostly Hedgepaw just loved her brother. It seemed like as good a time as any to spend some time with one of her favorite cats in the whole entire world. So after Bubblebeam walked away, the small apprentice approached Silverhawk. She moved with stealth, as had become their custom, and gently batted at his tail from behind to signal her presence. When he turned around, she offered a wide, genuine smile. She loved her big brother. "Hey, Silver!" she chirped warmly. "What's up? What were you talking about?"

SILVERHAWK
The darker the weather...
Bubblebeam was a miracle. Did she even have to put any effort into the endeavor of lifting Silverhawk’s spirits? No, surely she didn’t. She merely needed to exist in his presence and his heart was buoyed. Silverhawk hadn’t felt right for several days, verging on a week or more, he’d stopped counting the time. He refused to let go of his fury regarding his demotion, and now the alarm of the situation with Wolfpaw which, similarly, would not leave his mind… All together, it was almost too much for him to bear. Not that he was inclined to detail his stress to anyone, even if it was evident in the slippage of his usually regulated composure (which only added to his constant aggravation). But when he had a moment to sit and talk with Bubblebeam… his concerns were nearly forgotten. Silverhawk was not capable of putting either of the largest stressors from his mind entirely, but he could push them far enough away to- to smile. He wasn’t sure how often he smiled these days. It was always easier with her.
As furious as he was with Leopardstar’s ruling, he was glad she’d had enough sense to let Bubblebeam into the Clan. Stars, he was grateful to have her now, have her somewhere he never had to let go.
Eventually, Bubblebeam had to go, called off for a final patrol of the night. Silverhawk nodded and waved his tail farewell, watching over his shoulder as she went. He would have wilted after she’d gone, turned sour by the absence of any comforting presence, but no sooner than Bubblebeam had made it out of camp was there the sensation of small paws swiping at the end of his tail.
There were two cats who would greet him like that: Nettleweaver, perhaps, if he was feeling brave, and far more likely, Hedgepaw. Silverhawk did not need to turn around to know which it was. He would know his family anywhere, in any way. His smile, which had started to fall, was rising again when he did turn around to blink down at his sister. ”Hedge,” he greeted softly, voice warm with affection. There was a moment, looking down at her, where he was gripped with fear: was she hurt in any way? Was she safe? In distress? Did she need him? But then Silverhawk took in the roundness of her eyes, the height of her upturned mawline, and he relaxed.
At ease, Silverhawk let his smile grow a little wider. He turned around to face Hedgepaw fully and reached out to place a paw atop her head, gently ruffling the fur there. What were they talking about? What an odd question. It made Silverhawk’s whiskers twitch. Maybe it was with amusement; maybe it wasn’t. Even he wasn’t really sure. ”Nothing important,” Silverhawk answered with a light chuckle. And that was the truth. All they spoke of was how Bubblebeam was settling, their individual schedules for the rest of the night--when they’d see each other again. Silverhawk had promised to wait for her. Why did he feel defensively about sharing that with Hedge, of all cats? He blinked and settled on adding, ”Just schedules.” Then a wrinkle, this a sign of proper amusement, appeared in the bridge of his muzzle. ”Why?” Silverhawk hummed, light and teasing as he leaned down to be closer to eye level with Hedgepaw. ”When did you get to be the nosy sort, hm?”

Any jealousy that Hedgepaw could have mustered at seeing Silverhawk smiling at someone else had little chance to even grow, given that it vanished without a trace when he grinned that way at her. Her big brother was still her big brother. Getting any time with him, any of the positive attention he was so good at giving, was more than enough. Her own smile only grew. The heavy presence of a paw upon her head took her back to the days when she'd been a kit. How had it been she had grown so little since then? His paw was still nearly the size of her head... nearly. Still, she rubbed into the gesture, feeling a deep purr rumble out of her chest in satisfaction. "Just schedules? Got it." She understood. When she was talking with cats she liked, it didn't matter what they were talking about--she would still enjoy it.
Asking about what he had been doing was nosy? Hedgepaw let out a good-natured huff, flicking one of her small ears in response, though her smile did not waver. "Is it so weird that I want to know what my brother's up to?" she asked innocently. "Especially when he's talking to the newest cat in the Clan." Her tail waved slightly behind her, a sign of her enjoyment of the conversation. Green eyes met their strikingly similar counterparts, glittering with a certain mischievous roguishness she'd borne even since kithood. "Don't worry, though, I don't mind. Bubblebeam seems nice! I'd never met anyone from SkyClan before. She told me that they climb trees over there. She said maybe she'd teach me. I bet she'd teach you, too, if you wanted." A small white paw batted at Silverhawk's large gray forepaw. Nonchalant, as if it didn't matter, she moved into the next point of her conversation--the question that had seized hold of her the moment she saw that smile. "You two are... friends, right? Just friends?" Of course, it didn't really matter, all things considered. It wouldn't change how she felt about either her big brother or her new-friend-possible-sister-substitute. But... she wanted Silverhawk to be happy. If love made cats happy, then didn't it stand to reason that she wanted him to find that happiness, whether it be with Bubblebeam or someone else?

SILVERHAWK
The darker the weather...
Silverhawk couldn’t help but laugh at Hedgepaw’s defense. He supposed it wasn’t wrong, no--he felt the same curiosity whenever he saw her speaking with Fishpaw, though his interest held a more aggressive edge than hers ever could. And again, another sound of humor at the statement that she didn’t mind. Though Hedgepaw’s continuance made his whiskers twitch. When had they spoken? He hadn’t seen it. Possession in regard to both cats made his blood run briefly hot. What did they need with each other that had nothing to do with him? A blink. He was being ridiculous, wasn’t he? They were Clanmates now, and Bubblebeam was bound to be considered family one day besides. Why shouldn’t they talk? Besides, he wanted his family to like her; to approve of her. Talking was a good thing. But it soured Silverhawk’s stomach. He wondered if he’d ever recover from what had gone wrong inside him.
Another blink, and his eyes were sliding down to watch the smaller white paw swat against his own. A chuff left him. He was considering a response when Hedgepaw went drawling on with a question that made the just-dissipating heat rush back into his veins. It was moderately difficult to resist flattening his ears, narrowing his eyes. Though he wanted to appear crossly, he just looked at Hedgepaw with a sort of mild curiosity, or perhaps surprise. He brought on a smile, though it was pinched at the corners. What had he done to give her the idea they were anything more than friends? He’d been too obvious, hadn’t he? Worn his foolish heart squarely on his pelt. Silverhawk’s stomach turned again, sick mostly with himself now.
”Of course we’re friends,” he said, easy and jovial despite how he felt. His tail curled back and forth behind him. ”I wouldn’t have invited her to the Clan if we weren’t.” He laughed. He wasn’t helping himself at all, was he? No, he was certainly making things worse. Most cats that went to that length only did so for love. Silverhawk could practically feel any ground he had to stand on evaporating beneath his paws, leaving a cold and plummeting feeling to fill his body. ”And that’s all we are. I’ve known her for a while, and we’re close.” He shrugged. He hated to lie to Hedgepaw, but he couldn’t bear to profess the truth to anyone that wasn’t already aware of it. He still frequently envisioned Leopardstar breathing down his neck. Would she believe him? Would she share her idea with others? What if she turned to Hawkmist, who she was frustratingly fond of, to inquire about his opinion? What did it matter? Silverhawk cleared his throat. ”Why?” He hummed, light as he could. ”Somebody give you ideas?”

Hedgepaw looked up, studying her older brother's features. Something about them always seemed so regal, so strong--so cool. No matter what happened to him, he never lost his composure. Not that she'd seen, at least. Maybe aside from when he was in danger, but who didn't yell and growl when a fox lunged out to attack? If anything, the competent way he carried himself in those situations only made him seem all the more perfect in her eyes. Even if they weren't related by blood, their green eyes were nearly the same shade, hers perhaps a tinge deeper of a color. She noticed the slight difference to his smile, though she didn't understand its reason until he spoke. Oh. So I was just imagining things, after all. She nodded to show that she understood. It was a good thing she'd asked! If she'd gone on with her assumption, then Silver might have been upset with her, and she would have hated that. "Just friends. Not anything else. Got it." Hedgepaw sent a wide smile up to Silverhawk. "No reason! Nobody else said anything, I promise. And if they were, I'd set 'em straight. Looking at the way you were smiling, I thought... well. I just really want you to be happy, like... like Mamma and Daddy were." Her face grew serious for a moment. "I know having a mate isn't the only way to be happy. It's not the most important thing in the world, or anything. But if you did love someone, I'd be happy for you. Really I would. Whoever it is."
Still, that left her initial problem unsolved... how to make sure that Bubblebeam truly became part of the family? How to make sure that she felt tied to them, enough so that she would consider them brothers and sisters? If that deep desire of her heart could become true... Visions of outings to the Pine Grove with Silver and the others suddenly seemed that much lighter and more magical with the presence of a fluffy gray she-cat. Hedgepaw tilted her head to the side as she always did when thinking, as if tipping the thoughts inside her brain would make them generate ideas faster. Her other brothers were too young to be taking on any mates. It was a shame that she only had one older brother, and no aunts or uncles to speak of. Wait--was that true? Hedgepaw blinked at the face that came to her mind. Hawkmist. He was not related to her by blood, either, but neither had Silverhawk been and he was as much her older brother as it was possible to be. What exactly Hawkmist was to her, she had never quite had a name for--but it was obvious that he was family to her, just as much as Silverhawk and Fernpaw and Wolfpaw and Mamma. Pineblossom nearly considered him a son, too, from what the little apprentice could tell. Then, if the only way to ensure Bubblebeam joined their family was by her romance with an older cat in the family, and Silverhawk wasn't interested in such a thing... That left an option that seemed so easy she had no idea how it had not yet occurred to her.
Green eyes, which had been fixed on a distant point, suddenly brightened. Hedgepaw raised her gaze once more to meet Silver's, a warm smile curling onto her face again. "I just had a great idea." The small brown she-cat stood up from her seated position, her short tail waving behind her in excitement. "I was mostly thinking about Bubblebeam, and how it would be really nice to have an older sister--not 'cause our family is bad in any way! I love you so much, Silver, and you're the best thing in my life, along with Mamma and Fernpaw and Wolfpaw. But... y'know, now that I know her, I just think it would be--nice--to have her as family, too. 'Cause what I have together with all of you is so good, it must be wonderful to have more." Her voice rambled a little bit, explaining her train of thought, words almost falling over each other in her eagerness. Distantly she hoped that she remained somewhat coherent, though she had never been as smart at expressing herself as Fernpaw or as eloquent as Mamma. "So! If I want Bubblebeam to be my sister, and you aren't an'thing more than friends with her, then what about Hawkmist? Maybe I could get them together! 'Cause he's basically an extra brother, or more like a cousin, and if they were mates then that would make Bubblebeam my family." Having finished her spiel, she looked up at Silverhawk, eyes glowing luminous in the darkness. It was the pleading, artfully cute expression she always used when asking him to go on a walk with her, or asking to play hide-and-seek. "Will you help me, Silver? Please? Then you'd be her family, too! If you like her well enough to invite her to ShadowClan, then I bet you'd like to be even closer with her, right?"

SILVERHAWK
The darker the weather...
Silverhawk returned the nod of understanding with a shallow bow of his own head. Hedgepaw’s smile--and the explanation that came with it--made his features soften as he regarded her. To be happy like Forestbreeze and Pineblossom were… yes, that did sound nice. Especially to share that happiness with Bubblebeam (and Hawkmist). The gentle earnesty of her admission nearly--though only nearly--made him want to relent and share the truth of his feelings with Hedgepaw. Instead, Silverhawk just issued a hum of acknowledgment and gently ruffled the fur atop her head again before retracting his paw to let her think.
It was a few moments as Hedgepaw tipped whatever she was considering around in her head, but eventually, she came to a conclusion. Silverhawk’s own head dipped to the side as she turned to regard him once again, smiling brightly. What could she have come up with, especially relating to the topic at paw? What mischief? What idea was so great?
The answer to his questions came slowly. At first, she spoke of Bubblebeam--a reasonable connection--though the speech made something sour twist to life in him. What did she need with another sibling? Hedgepaw assured that she loved him--and the rest of their family--quite dearly, but still, Silverhawk found his weight shifting a bit. She had him. Wasn’t that enough? Silverhawk had never wanted for more in the aspects of family; he’d just been blessed with it. And however little he liked their closeness, she had Hawkmist as well. There was a part of him that supposed Bubblebeam’s magnetism was impossible to resist, even in the familial, but that did not stop the illogical bitterness.
And then there was the conclusion of her idea: to set Bubblebeam up with Hawkmist. Silverhawk felt as if the soft ground had dropped out from beneath his paws, though he did not give the feeling away. For the first time, he wanted to snap his teeth at a family member--at little Hedge. For a few moments, Silverhawk just sat very, very still, quelling the tempest that rose with a suddenness to life within him. Wasn’t it bad enough that Hawkmist was nearly capable of stealing his sister away from him? (She said it herself--he was practically family to her.) Enough that Bubblebeam had stumbled into Hawkmist’s life, too, that they’d known each other far before that Gathering and that they were good to each other? That it would be entirely reasonable if Hawkmist came to realize one day, of his own accord, that Bubblebeam was far better company--far better in soul--than Silverhawk tended to be?
His weight finally began to shift again. Silverhawk’s head moved to the side, eyes sliding away. A low, thoughtful hum rolled out of his throat. What could he say to Hedgepaw that was not crueler than anything she deserved to hear? That would still keep his deep and complicated feelings about Hawkmist a secret? His feelings about Bubblebeam, as well? His jagged-toothed possessiveness?
Eventually, Silverhawk shook his head and managed to swivel his attention back around to Hedgepaw. He studied her for a moment, levelly meeting her glowing eyes--almost hard to deny, but not quite--before saying, ”Don’t you think I know her well enough already, if I like her enough to invite her to ShadowClan?” His nose wrinkled and he smiled teasingly, though the humor didn’t quite reach his eyes. ”Besides, we must know different Hawkmists. I can’t imagine mine falling over himself for anyone.” Was that true, or was it perfectly easy to imagine them entwined with Bubblebeam the way they often sat in privacy--and terribly difficult to imagine Hawkmist harboring the same emotions for him? Silverhawk blinked slowly.
”I’ll see what I can do,” he promised after a beat. His nose wrinkled again and he smiled kindly. Would he? Certainly not. Perhaps he would invent some terrible lie to tell one or both of them, something that would ensure they would never speak to each other again--but no, he couldn’t do that. Largely not to Bubblebeam. But he wouldn’t be happy with the result, either. What then? He would have to intervene somehow. Perhaps he could arrange their array of schedules so he could be the sole occupant of both cats’ time--and to keep Hedgepaw from interfering. That couldn’t be difficult, could it? Hedge would be happy with the belief that he was aiding on her asinine quest, and he would quietly engineer marvels to keep her goal from ever being realized. She would never be the wiser. Neither would Hawkmist, nor Bubblebeam.

Hedgepaw felt a small, quiet purr rumble through her at Silverhawk's paw resting atop her head. The gesture felt so familiar, so brotherly, that she couldn't help enjoying it. He'd done it ever since she was a kit smaller than his paw, and now it felt that her head had almost grown enough to bear the gentle pressure. Not quite--her "growing spurt" was still late, Mamma claimed--but enough that she finally felt as if she would be nearing warriorhood soon. It had taken a while, and there had been several setbacks, but things were finally beginning to look up. Warmth radiated from the top of her head downward, reaching all the way down to the tips of her toes. This joy had her so lost that she missed the brief stillness that took over Silver's entire form. Instead, by the time she centered herself back in reality, she looked up to see his face as calm and kind as ever. The wrinkle of his nose made her giggle. His agreement made her ears perk up, and her grin widen so much as to nearly make her cheeks ache.
"You will? You actually will? Oh, that's great!" she chirped happily. So it had been a good idea, after all! Though Silverhawk had mentioned something or other about knowing Bubblebeam and Hawkmist better, she hardly remembered with the rush of eagerness flooding through her. Images of snow falling in leaf-bare, running through and playing with her brothers again like when they were kits, danced in her head--except this time, they were in camp instead of at the scary lakeplace, and Bubblebeam joined them. "I'm so excited. My family's so good, and you're so good, Silver. You're the best big brother ever." She was, and they were. Soon she and Fern and Wolf would be warriors, and then Bubblebeam and Hawkmist would be official members of the family, and everyone she loved would be so close to her that they would remain safe and sound forever. Picture-perfect. Even thinking of this idealized future sent her heart racing. Though she knew that life would never be quite that easy, with plenty of predators and scary monsters waiting outside in the forest, camp would be safe. As long as they stayed at home, everything would be fine. And Fishpaw and Quillsplash and Nettleweaver and everyone else she cared for would be there forever. They could face scary things, as long as they were together.
But the dream would never come to pass if she didn't make it a reality, so it was time to get to work. Hedgepaw stood up and shook out her short brown fur decisively. "I'm gonna set up a meeting with Hawkmist tomorrow night at moonhigh!" she said. It was so cool to be part of this. Like a secret plot, or like the games that she and Hawkmist played as kits, except the victory would be so much sweeter. Bright green eyes shone as they met Silverhawk's gaze. "I'll go meet with him, and then you can meet with Bubblebeam, and we'll have them bump into each other and it'll be all romantic. And I mean, if it doesn't work out, that's okay! But I wanna try. 'Cause she's really nice, and so is Hawkmist, and so I bet they'd get along just great." Sure, the two of them were different, but that didn't mean they couldn't love each other. What would Hawkmist's face look like, smiling at a mate? Would he finally get out of his quietness and be just as glad about the world as she was? She wanted to see it. She wanted to see him right now, and to help him be as happy as he could be. "Anyway, I gotta go talk with him. Just remember I love you, and you're the best. Bye!" Hedgepaw stretched her head as high as she could to press her nose into Silverhawk's fur. Since she was still too short to reach his face, she settled for his chest, and then turned to dart away as quickly as she could. Excitement left her feeling giddy like a kit again. I'm gonna make everybody happy.
