Newly-named Primroselight awoke from her slumber in the Riverclan warrior den. She wasn't completely used to sleeping in a different den, with her parents nearby, but Dustpaw and Beechpaw nowhere nearby. But she was happy to be a full member of her clan, siblings at her side, even if some of them were still apprentices.
Spottedstar's disappearance had shaken the whole clan, along with leaving them leaderless. He had left in the middle of the night, following a route now untraceable. The young warrior was related to the missing leader - he was her great grandfather. They had never shared anything nearly similar to a family bond, and more than once had had the thought that her closer family didn't particularly agree with him. It was undoubtable that he had made his fair share of mistakes, but she wouldn't have wished anything bad upon him. Wolfcall had taken over as leader, even though he hadn't visited the moonstone yet to receive his nine lives. The question of who would be deputy was still pending. Due to the clan's small size, there were few choices, but this would be an important decision. She was well aware that her father Bloodstrike was definitely in the running along with her mother Smokefeather.
Even if the clan was struggling with the loss of their leader, they still needed food. Trying to be excited for her first hunt as a warrior, she rose to search for Smokefeather. It didn't take long for Primroselight to locate her mother. "Hi mum," she said, recent events causing the usual cheerfulness in her voice to weaken little. "Are you free to go hunting?" She hoped her mother would be willing to go, but wouldn't put up a fuss if she was busy with more important things.

Smokefeather was curled up in her nest, chin resting against Bloodstrike's shoulder. The dark tom had finally allowed himself a few moments of rest and had even cleaned up, something that hadn't gone unappreciated.
All at once, it seemed like things were starting to finally happen in the clan. Two of Redfall's kits had been made apprentices. Smokefeather's own kits were becoming warriors. Spottedstar had simply vanished, a trail that lead towards Windclan's territory, lost to the chilly rain. They'd done their duty and followed it the best they could before losing it entirely, and it seemed as though Spottedstar was well and truly gone this time.
Good riddance, as far as Smokefeather was concerned. The selfish old tom had abandoned his clan after having hardly lead for the past season at least. She felt for those who had known the tom and actually considered him to be someone worthy, but she did not mourn his absence. Wolfcall had done well in leading them so far, and actually cared about his clanmates. He hadn't been to the moonstone yet, but he'd have to go soon enough, and that also entailed choosing a deputy.
Smokefeather wasn't really ambitious, she just did what she had to, to keep her family safe and fed. She could not bear to sit idle, and the whispers around camp all seemed to be focused on a pawful of names. Bloodstrike, Wrenspring, Swansong, Foxfire, herself. All capable warriors, all dedicated to doing what was right. Yet Smokefeather would happily say that she didn't want the position. Bloodstrike and Wrenspring were more capable leaders, she felt, as was Foxfire, even though he had stepped away from the position previously. She did what she could for the clan, it was true, but Smokefeather didn't feel like she could lead them. Training an apprentice was one thing, helping lead a clan quite another.
A soft voice pulled the she-cat from her thoughts, and she tilted her head to see her daughter.
"Hunting? Of course." She mewed, uncurling from where she had been laying, giving the half-asleep tom beside her a quick lick between the ears before following Primroselight out of the den.
"Enjoying being a warrior so far?" Smokefeather asked, glancing up at her daughter. She'd trained hard, and Smokefeather could not have been more proud of her.

Smiling at her mother's willingness, the pair set off out of camp. She took a moment to think about Smokefeather's question. Did she enjoy warriorhood? Was it really any different? "I mean, it's great and all, but it doesn't really feel any different. My name's changed, I guess, and I don't spend as much time with you, but apart from that? It's not exactly what I expected." Primroselight had almost believed that once she had her ceremony, all her problems would be solved. However, that was far from the truth. She still had her own personal struggles, along with the collective struggles of her misplaced clan. But she had only been a warrior for a few sunrises. Maybe all would change in time.
They headed towards the beech trees of Riverclan territory, the young warrior enjoying the scents of leaf-fall. Every few moments, a small stream would try and cross their path, but Primroselight managed to avoid most of them. The still unfamiliar territory felt strange underpaw, especially compared to the harsh stone of Twolegplace or the dirt of the forest floor. All was well until they came across a slightly wider stream. She felt the ground dip a little, and so she tried to leap over. But she had misjudged the width and depth of it, leaving her hind legs in the water as she smacked her chin on the ground. Luckily there was no blood, as her tongue had been out of the way. Face sheepish at her fail, she straitened herself up. At least only Smokefeather had been there to witness her clumsy episode.
"I'm alright, I promise!" She said quickly as she felt her mother begin to worry.
Only slowed a little by Primroselight's slip, it didn't take long for the two warriors to reach their destination. Hopefully there would be lots of prey in the trees, collecting food for the incoming leaf-bare. She parted her maw slightly to search for prey. Frog! The Riverclan prey wasn't a favourite of hers, but at the end of the day prey was prey. Her mind focused on the catch, she crept towards it in a hunting crouch. Ribbet. There, it had confirmed its location to her. Once the warrior was close enough, she leapt at the frog. Her paws were reached out, and her leap this time hadn't fallen short, but the frog was too quick. It sprung away from her at the sight of danger and hopped away.

"I could find you more work to do, if you'd like." Smokefeather's tone was light and teasing, relaxed as she followed Primroselight out of the camp. "It's a bit boring without an apprentice to bother. Half of my days are suddenly quiet." She added, whiskers twitching. All things aside, Smokefeather was in a good mood.
Smokefeather leapt backwards at the splash of water as Primroselight misjudged leaping over the small stream, only to rush forward in concern.
"Are you okay?" She asked, and while Primroselight assured her she was fine, the pale tortoiseshell kept an eye on her daughter until they reached the beech copse. She wasn't a kit anymore, but she was her kit still.
The pair split up to hunt, and it wasn't long until Smokefeather spotted a small bird in the branches of a beech tree. Circling, Smokefeather climbed up the opposite side of the tree trunk from where the bird was perched, silently making her way towards it. The feathered prey didn't see her until it was too late, the mottled warrior landing lightly on the branch, teeth snapping closed around its' neck.
Smokefeather made her way down from the tree, bird in tow.

Only the slightest bit disgruntled from her missed catch, Primroselight opened her jaws once again to pick up a trace of prey. The gentle breeze carried with it the scent of squirrel, and so she followed it deeper into the copse. Now a fair distance from where they had parted, the warrior breathed in deeply again to check she was going on the right direction.
Her ears pricked as she heard a rustle in the branches above her. Moving as silently as she could, she crept up the trunk of the tree. Unlike most of her clan, Primroselight wasn't a big fan of climbing trees. It was strange that she didn't enjoy it, as they were known for their ease in climbing trees. The cream warrior, on the other hand, didn't like the unreliability of the branches that hung over her head. Still, she hung on to the trunk. The squirrel, scared by some unknown thing, dashed down the tree that she was clinging onto. Confident that her claws were sufficiently dug into the wood, she reached out a paw to catch the furry-tailed mammal.
But the squirrel was too quick for her - it had reached the ground and fled before she was ready. The extra time she spent ensuring she wouldn't fall meant that her paw didn't move swiftly enough. She still had no prey to show for her efforts, but at least she hadn't made a fool of her self again by falling out the tree. Hoping that she would catch something on her next attempt, she scampered down from the tree.

Burying her prey to come back for it later, Smokefeather tested the air once more, unsatisfied with a single catch.
Scenting squirrel, Smokefeather padded farther into the beech copse. It didn't take her long to catch sight of the furry animal, and she dropped into a crouch, slowly stalking towards it. When she was close enough, she leapt forward.
The squirrel slipped from her paws, and Smokefeather's tail lashed in frustration. They'd have to keep searching for prey, it seemed, as she glanced up to spot her daughter making her way down from a tree empty-pawed as well.

Refusing to go back to camp without some of her own prey, Primroselight continued hunting. Birdsong. Her ears swivelled in the direction of the tune, and her body soon followed. She could hunt birds, right? Well, at least better than frogs or anything up a tree. The bird perched on a low branch, making its presence known to its hunter. Her paws light on the ground, she crept forward in a hunter's crouch. Once she had decided that she was close enough, she pounced, hoping to be successful this time. The bird, however, had other ideas. It let out a shriek of alarm and fled as the warrior leapt at it, leaving her with only a few tail feathers. To make matters worse, it found another branch nearby, perched on it and continued with its cheerful song.
As sweet as Primroselight may be, the three failed catches were starting to annoy her. They had already had the worst of luck as a clan, couldn't they have the tiniest bit of luck at hunting? She did believe in Starclan, but recent events left her feeling as if they could do a bit better. Maybe they were just dead cats, some good, like Silentwhisper, but some indifferent to the living clans. Like with everyone else, she wanted to believe the best in them. But the current times made her think otherwise.

Smokefeather let out a quiet sigh. It seemed as though neither mother nor daughter were having any luck today.
Turning, she began to follow the scent of another squirrel... or maybe it was the same one that had escaped them earlier. Either way, Smokefeather would be glad to catch something else. The squirrel came into view once more, and the warrior crouched, carefully stalking forward once more.
Claws latching onto the fluffy pelt, Smokefeather leaned forward and gave the squirrel a quick nip to end its' suffering. Gray-green eyes lifted to watch her daughter's progress.

Primroselight followed her trail back towards Smokefeather a little - she didn't want to wonder too far from her hunting partner, especially in unfamiliar territory. She also thought that she might've scared away all the prey where she was hunting earlier. Her sharp nose picked up a trace of frog. There was a chance that it was the same one from earlier, and the warrior hoped that this time it would be a success. Another try. You can do it this time. She told herself.
This time, the frog was smart enough to keep its mouth shut, but Primroselight was soon sure where it was from scent alone. She dropped into a hunting crouch and prepared to pounce. This time she would get it. Or maybe not. The frog once again leapt out of her grasp, escaping into the trees. Why?
"Mum, how have I not caught anything? Every time I try, I just fail." Four out of four times she had missed, and her usual patience was starting to dissolve away. Turned out being a warrior didn't fix any of her issues.
