Sprucebark was getting ready to leave for the journey and quest to try and find his son. All the arrangements were in neat and tidy order. He had eaten his meal allowed and had spent extra time fishing for an extra fish to eat as well as other fish for the camps pile, a pitiful attempt at trying to make his absense not be as hard on the clan. He knew it would not last long, not nearly as long as he planned to be searching for Elmstorm his lost son.

His mate, Scorchlight would be going with him and if fate had been kinder to his brothers leg he would have asked him to come to. As it was, he couldnt ask that of his brother.

As he stood at the entrance to the elders den he took a deep breathe thinking of all the times of their younger selves arguing over the most pointless of things. 'mommm rowie broke the rules againnnn' he cringed laying his ears back at the past words he spoke of that played in his mind as if it were yesterday. He put a front paw on the elders den wall entrance. Since then though, they had become so close to each other. They were very different but he enjoyed time with his brother a lot now... it just had taken them both so long to grow up and realize it.

He sighed and finally entered the den his eyes squinting in the harsher lighting of it all. "Rowie?" he meowed his littermates nickname and went over to his nest settling beside him.

"I got permission from mom. I'm leaving for a little while to go search for Elmstorm and hopefully bring him back home." his voice was orderly as it always was but ... there was something clearly wrong, his pelt which was so usually nice and groomed without a hair out of place was messy, unkept and even ruffled in places??!

The warrior had been looking everywhere in riverclan lands for his son. Now that he had permission to go outside the clan's borders it gave him a lot to think about, he had been drilling his hunting on land in case river access was not available, he had been practicing spar drills in case he and scorch ran into threats, practicing jumping, climbing and anything else imaginable that might give him even the slightest better odds to bring his son back home. Through it all he had lost the ability to be the perfectly presentable cat that he so usually was.

He glanced over at his brother and swallowed hard.

"I don't know how long I will be gone. I ... I'm going to miss you alot but this is something that I have to do... I know what the twoleg capture places are like, the icky food they try and make you eat. I wont have my son be there a day longer than necessary!" he moewed determained.

His mind was made up and the only barrier had been official approval from their mom which he now had. Nothing was going to stop him now.

He laid his ears back expecting to hear a long list of why he shouldnt do this from his brother and elder.

"I'm going... and I won't be told otherwise. But... if you have advise for me... please share" he meowed his voice teetering on even being able to speak the words

"what would you do? Is there anything i'm forgetting?" he meowed feeling his eyes sting up more and more. He knew there was a possibility he wouldnt ever see Rowan again and it was really starting to get to him.

He moved forwards pushing his nose gently into his brothers pelt as he shivered with nerves and worry.

ROWANSONG
I want for us this...

When he heard someone shifting outside, Rowansong blinked curiously and lifted his head. It took no longer than a moment for him to note the scent of his brother--the last of them left. He was already smiling when Sprucebark entered the den. Even when the sight of his brother--disheveled and tired in a way he so rarely allowed himself to be--gave him pause, he maintained the happy expression. ”Spruce,” he greeted softly, head bobbing in a nod. Rowansong’s heart squeezed in his chest and the smile finally drifted from his expression. He’d known Elmstorm was missing, had known Sprucebark was looking for him desperately--and this seemed, of course, the obvious path of that search. But the logic of it did not soften the delivery of the blow. There was a discomforting finality in the air, though it could have been imagined. Rowansong did not know what he’d do if Sprucebark failed to return. He’d lost so many cats already. He refused to lose more. But however staunchly he wanted to refuse, he was powerless to stop the ebb and flow of lives from his own.

Sprucebark made it clear there would be no arguing with him. His meow was fierce with determination despite the exhaustion obvious in him, and he said the words himself, that he could not be talked out of it. Even so… he wanted to hear something. His voice cracked and his eyes were growing misty at the edges. Rowansong welcomed the press of Sprucebark against him when his brother moved closer, shifting to lean into the push of his nose.

Rowansong did not say anything for several breaths. He just let their breaths fall in sync and gathered himself from the fear of losing his brother, his closest and his last. Then he shifted back slightly so he could look Sprucebark in the eyes. ”I wish I had words to sway you, or belief that they would work,” he sighed softly. ”I do not want to see you gone for an indeterminate time… I do not want to spend my days worrying you have joined Silverpelt, and I will never find you.” Rowansong grit his teeth before expelling another breath. Then, gently, he smiled again. ”I do not want you to go at all, but I believe that is rather hypocritical of me, as I would do the same in your place.”

Rowansong leaned in again, taking his turn to press his nose into Sprucebark’s ruffled fur. He took in his brother’s scent for a moment before rasping his tongue over his ribs, smoothing the fur there. ”I do not have advice you do not already know,” he went on. ”To be careful. Avoid twolegs and their hounds and their traps at all costs. You are a smart and strong warrior, as is Scorchlight; do not let yourselves get caught. I hear the water may be poisoned in Twolegplace--be careful drinking it, if that is your destination. And,” Rowansong laughed gently, ”keep your belly full, if you are able. It will keep your mind clearer. Your spirits will remain higher as well.” Rowansong groomed the spot of Sprucebark’s fur a few more times before pulling away. ”And this is not advice, but a request… a demand, even. Return home to me and Mama. Bring your son home.”
...that we are well.
