Leopardstar's steps were swift and sure as she walked the secret paths of ShadowClan's territory with all the ease and grace that came from a lifetime of traversing the marsh. Trailing behind her, close enough for safety and not quite able to keep up, was the formerly-SkyClan warrior--Bubblebeam.
"We aren't trying to trick you when we say that this path will not be easy," she said, a final warning as they approached the camp. Stepping into the muddy hollow, she took a deep breath. "Sablestrike! Pineblossom! Silverhawk! Hawkmist! I need to speak with you. As swiftly as possible."
She had half a mind to call Nightpaw and Sunflare as well, to let the council as a whole discuss the matter. If they came at her call, she wouldn't turn them away, but neither would she invite the entirety of the Clan to gather around just yet.

What little of the marsh territory Bubblebeam had seen over the former border had not really prepared her for the walk she had just gone on. The thin deciduous trees changed quickly to thick sprucey conifers, and the relatively firm ground quickly gave way to mud so squishy and slippery that she'd nearly slipped several times. The stench that she recognized from Gatherings rose into her nose with every step, and she only managed to bear it by reminding herself how many times she'd caught that same scent from a warm embrace rather than cold pine needles. Eventually, though, she made it--though she knew that the journey would be the easy part. Now would be the first of many difficult tests to pass. From here on, she was an outsider, an interloper. A curiosity at best and an enemy at worst. Hopefully a trusted Clanmate to some... but she knew that many would never trust her. She would just have to come to terms with that. Glancing around at the unfamiliar scenery, though, her eyes could not rest on any one place. She felt very truly alone in this strange camp, coated with brambles and full of suspicious glances.
Wordlessly she followed Leopardstar into the center of camp, hardly able to hear the names that the leader called out. She sat down on the odd terrain and swept her bushy tail over her mud-stained paws. This entire scenario felt unreal, almost like a dream. Maybe any moment she would wake up back in her nest alongside Sorrelmist and Ploverwing and Hemlockfox. Her mind felt oddly blank, probably overloaded by the simultaneous relief and worry and anxiety that had been flooding her senses ever since the Gathering. Bubblebeam hoped quietly that only the cats Leopardstar asked for would come. She did not know whether she had enough presence of mind to be stared at right now. Though of course, she knew that was not something that she could dictate. Everything from here on out was startlingly outside of her control.
--
Hedgepaw was accustomed to the leader's voice summoning the entire Clan, but to hear only a few specific cats named--and for most of them to be her family members--piqued her interest immediately. She peeked around the edge of the apprentice's den, and then immediately withdrew back behind it in shock. Who was that? Leopardstar had brought back a cat she didn't know! Was it a nomad, like Cherish and the others? Or maybe a rogue like Fishpaw? Fear of the unknown tingled in her paws, but her curiosity got the better of her, and she stole another hidden glance. The she-cat might have looked scary, with the massive scar over her eye, if not for the fluffiness of her gray pelt and the nervous twitching of her whiskers. She was so fluffy. She didn't smell like Fishpaw had, though, not from this distance anyway. What was a new cat doing in camp? Was she going to join, or just here to visit? Hedgepaw stayed at a distance for now just to be sure, but kept watching. Whoever this cat was, Silverhawk and Hawkmist and Mamma Pine would sort it out. They were the smartest cats that she knew.

SILVERHAWK
The darker the weather...
Silverhawk had stopped eating a few moments ago, abandoning the frog he lay sharing with Hawkmist to turn his attention toward the entrance of camp. The rich and familiar smells of tree-bark, leaf-litter, and warm stone had caught on the air. A SkyClan cat was approaching. Selfishly, he hoped… well, it had to be Bubblebeam, didn’t it? SkyClan had no other reason to bother them, so far as he knew. He’d wanted to have a chance to tell Leopardstar about her first, and by that he was a little put off, but if it was her he scented on the wind… Well, Leopardstar accepted enough of her to guide her back to camp. Silverhawk’s body grew taut with expectation, muscles bunching under his fur.
Soon enough, their leader was broaching the tunnel that led into the hollow--and with her, a fluffy, gray-coated warrior. Silverhawk had to swallow to keep himself from smiling at the sight of her. It was no surprise that his name was called, but Hawkmist’s was a surprise. Had Bubblebeam mentioned him when she spoke to Leopardstar? She must have. Pineblossom, Silverhawk--those names made sense. But he hated the closeness between Hawkmist and Bubblebeam, of which he actually knew little. The thought wilted him a little, but he recovered quickly. Silverhawk exchanged a look with his best friend and flicked his shoulder as an additional summons. He only waited a beat for Hawkmist to gather himself before rising to his own paws and crossing camp.
Silverhawk was there in a moment. Though he wanted to, he refrained from pressing against Bubblebeam’s side. He stood opposite where she sat instead. He dipped his head first to Leopardstar and then to their expectant. ”Leopardstar,” he said evenly. ”Bubblebeam.” It was a great effort to keep the smile off his face now. He managed, though. His expression was always in control. Silverhawk blinked and turned toward his leader again, head inclined slightly to the side--toward Bubblebeam. ”So: I imagine she’s asked to join the Clan?” His tail swished behind him. He saw little point in feigning ignorance at this point. There was more he could say--had to say, to sway the Clan, especially contentious Sablestrike--but that could wait until the others arrived. For now, he was content to let his gaze drift again so his eyes could linger on Bubblebeam.

Having gotten back from training, Briarpaw sat near the apprentice den grooming the mud from her short fur. Bright green eyes glanced up at the sound of her mother's voice carrying across camp, curiosity burning in their depths as Leopardstar called for several of the warriors and Sablestrike to speak with her. The gray she-cat who padded in behind the leader wasn't one she recognized beyond the somewhat familiar scent that emanated from the border of highpine - a Skyclanner, evidently. What could she want with Shadowclan?
Briarpaw did not move from her spot, but she eyed the stranger with a mix of wariness and curiosity. If this was important, Leopardstar would tell them soon enough.

Swiftheart scented skyclan before even seeing them and if it werent for Leopards words she was about to have raised alarm about it.
She watched with curiosity as this new cat seemed to be led in by their leader.
She gave a friendly wave of her tail to Bubble though she doubted she would be seen amongst all the curious cats that seemed to be gathering now.

Whenever Leopardstar’s voice filled camp, no matter the reason, Nettleweaver’s pointed ears stood at attention. It was rare she asked for him or wanted his involvement, but being clued in didn’t hurt. He wasn’t very clued in though, often she’d yell out and then take her little club someplace else and he’d be left in the dark, prodding mournfully at the mud like it held a petal to whatever secrets they were gossiping about. If it weren’t for the scent of SkyClan that swiftly followed the spotted leader, he would have assumed it was just another of those such occasions. With a yawn, he rose from his place in the shadows and approached closer. The warrior’s mismatched eyes instantly snapped to Bubbkebeam, completely ignoring the cats, regardless of his opinions of them, that Leopardstar had called forward and herself. Right now, the SkyClanner was the most interesting thing in the world. Before he’d seen her he would have guessed it were Wolfstar instead, here on leader business or whatever. He also wouldn’t have expected the SkyClan leader either if he was being truthful, especially given how Leopardstar was determined to push away any potential allies. It was all very surprising.
Nettleweaver did feel a little bad for staring so intensely, it wasn’t nice and as always he wanted to be her friend. Wanted to know all about her, like he did with everyone. He knew something already, the molly was Silverhawk’s friend. They always sat together at the gathering. The white tom saw them talking, like he’d talked to Vinecrawler or Asmodeus. It made him happy to the grey warrior in ShadowClan camp, and it wasn’t just because he was excited to unravel whatever secrets she had about SkyClan or herself, but for his friend. If Bubblebeam were joining them (hopefully!) then surely that would make Silverhawk happy, and Nettleweaver only wanted the best for his friends. He wished he was as lucky as the tabby tom, it would be nice if any of his friends decided they’d like to settle down in the marsh. Leopardstar let anybody into their clan - which wasn’t a bad thing to Nettleweaver.

Sunflare’s eye happened to be caught not only by the newcomer, but also by Nettleweaver for some reason. Something about the angle of the younger tom’s head, his posture, the way he smiled… huh.
Anyway, this was an important event. Sunflare approached Leopardstar. “I understand this is not my conversation,” he mewed. “But if you need me for anything, don’t hesitate to ask.” He turned and walked away to sit near Nettleweaver. For no particular reason.

Hawkmist
Bend me, break me, breaking down is easy...
Hawkmist realized something was changing when Silverhawk stopped taking bites of the frog they were sharing, growling half-heartedly at him, before following his gaze towards the entrance of camp. His ears perked up as he caught the familiar scent of Skyclan as well, and suddenly all thought of food had been abandoned. He waited in silent anticipation beside Silverhawk, hopeful and fearful in equal measures that it’d be Bubblebeam that walked through the camp's entrance.
And then, there she was. A beam of sunlight amidst the shadowed camp. Hawkmist’s heart leapt in his throat. He glanced at Silverhawk, saw the excitement written all across his face, and knew he’d set himself up for disaster; he gets a horrible feeling like he’s seeing his own future death. And yet, despite the dread and the jealousy, outweighing them is what could only be excitement, tangling with hope and bubbling up in his chest. He didn’t know how badly he really wanted her in easy reach, amidst his own borders, where he could protect her, care for her, lavish in her attention and her kindness-- he didn’t know, until he saw her in his home. And oh, he wanted her to stay.
It surprised him to hear Pineblossom’s name called as well, but he didn’t linger too long on it. He was just hopeful she would speak on Bubblebeam’s behalf; her voice would carry weight. Silverhawk’s tail flicked over his shoulder, knocking Hawkmist out of his reverie. And a heartbeat after Silverhawk rose, Hawkmist followed him as he always did, falling into pawstep just behind him. He sat at Silverhawk’s side with a respectful dip of his head to his leader, and when his eyes lifted they’re drawn to pale green instantly. He’s never shared Silverhawk’s knack for self control, and when he caught her eyes, for just a second, Hawkmist’s mouth actually turned upwards into a soft, encouraging little smile. He can’t help it. He felt proud of her. Proud that she chose herself, and what she wanted.
He glanced at Silverhawk again as he spoke. Hawkmist was fine with pushing through social situations with all the tactless blunder he was good at on his own, but this felt too important to mess up, so he was grateful for Silverhawk’s smooth and confident voice to follow the lead of. He wasn’t the focus of the attention of the gathering cats, but his pelt still felt hot and itchy from so many eyes towards them. He hoped Bubblebeam wasn’t withering under the staring. Careful to keep his tone as even and respectful as he could, he said, “I’m sure she’s already told you as much, but I am willing to speak on her behalf, Leopardstar.” It felt strange to speak so formally, but he managed the stilted words. He kept his eyes towards Leopardstar for the most part, but he couldn’t help stealing glances back at Bubblebeam.

Leopardstar offered a grateful smile to Sunflare. "You are a valued member of our council, Sunflare, and I assure you that my not calling your name today is a mark in your favor. Any input you may have would be welcome, should you choose to join the conversation. I'm sure the context will become clear momentarily."
The leader then turned her attention toward Silverhawk, Hawkmist, and Pineblossom.
"Before you each explain to me why we should welcome an outsider, one who has turned her back on a warrior's oath and seems determined to do so--and I do expect you to explain--I would first like answers as to why and how, exactly, three of you have managed to become close enough to a SkyClan warrior that she would be willing to leave her Clan, her family, and her oath behind. And, when you explain why she should stay, you will explain to me why I should trust her not to do the same thing to each and every one of you."
The words were harsh, though she kept her tone even. But she had warned the once-SkyClan cat already: she would be a traitor until she proved herself honorable, and she would have to earn her place in ShadowClan.
"Perhaps you have assumed I am simply lenient with potential Clanmates; and perhaps this idea occasionally has merit, when they come from outside the Clans. One who has never sworn themselves to our code of honor can hardly be accused of breaking it, and so each of them may be offered a chance to become one of us. But this is a full-fledged warrior of another Clan, who has broken her oath and her loyalties."
The leader blinked, her tail curling loosely around her side.
"And regardless of how this meeting proceeds, each of you will likewise be under scrutiny for some time; unless you can adequately explain why the majority of our honored council members have managed to find enough free time to get this close to a cat who should be an acquaintance at best and your enemy at worst. Perhaps extra duties would be in order for the lot of you to ensure you don't lose track of your loyalties again, in addition to acclimating your friend to our way of life--if she is allowed to stay. If so, she will be introduced to the Clan, but she will be an outsider and one who must work to earn our trust, more than any one of you ever has."
Having said her piece, she regarded the group with a level stare.
"Now. I have heard Bubblebeam make a case for herself already, in the company of Wolfstar. The rest of you, explain yourselves."

PINEBLOSSOM
If I could tell you how I feel...
The scent of a cat that did not belong in this area of the forest alerted Pineblossom before Leopardstar came storming in with a gray molly at her tail. Pineblosom’s eyes widened. She hadn’t expected Bubblebeam to find her way into ShadowClan already—but given Leopardstar’s tone, Pineblossom knew that she had no time to dawdle.
Pineblossom swiftly got to her paws and walked after Silverhawk and Hawkmist. She had no plans to say anything to Leopardstar, unlike her boys, given how obvious her irritation was, but before she could even attempt a word, Leopardstar began to speak with words that dug in like claws. Pineblossom’s ears folded back briefly before settling in a normal position and she sat down beside Silverhawk. Of course she dared not interrupt her leader, and she let Leopardstar hound them as she desired until they were asked to speak. Hawkmist had little charisma, so he should not begin to explain, and Silverhawk was quick to temper when he was told he was in the wrong, so he certainly should not have the first word. It would have to be her.
“Admittedly, I feel I would have the least say in this matter, but I will explain all the same,” Pineblossom began. “Silverhawk and Hawkmist had met Bubblebeam before—at a Gathering, from what I understand, though I will leave it to them to explain any specifics. Silverhawk told me about the friendship he was building with Bubblebeam and how she had long been wishing to leave her clan.” She made no mention of the fact that Silverhawk told Pineblossom that he may have been falling in love with her. Though he swore there was no actual romance that crossed the borders, she was not about to explain the difference to Leopardstar who was already cross with them. “He claimed she was a good warrior and that he wished she could leave her clan and come to ours instead. I thought that you would not be entirely opposed to the idea, but I didn’t know her and I would want to meet her before I could even think of bringing it up to you.”
She looked to Bubblebeam and tilted her head toward her. “By coincidence, a couple of weeks later we came across each other by the Thunderpath border while on our patrols. We sat and talked together for a few minutes before we continued on our paths. I have only met her the once, so I can only speak to her character so much as I had seen: but she was honest to me, kind and courteous. She never made a singular step to cross the border or to speak ill of our clan. She was interested in what ShadowClan was like and was polite to learn of who I was and of my experience before she even knew that I was the mother of the cat she had befriended. I do not think she would be a bad addition to ShadowClan if she can learn of our techniques. And while you are wary of the friendship she has kindled with Hawkmist and Silverhawk, it does provide her new ties to foster immediate loyalty to our clan.”
Pineblossom added, “To be clear, Leopardstar: I do not think of you as soft or someone that can be ‘tricked.’ Nor do Hawkmist or Silverhawk, for if they did then I would be the first one they had to answer to for such a foolish array of thoughts. The idea of Bubblebeam joining ShadowClan was not something out of malice or deception, but instead of belief that Bubblebeam could bring good things to ShadowClan while she wished so strongly to not remain in SkyClan. If she would have left to be a rogue it would have been all the same to her from what I understand, so why not have her talents be put to use for ShadowClan’s benefit?” She blinked slowly, showing her respect to her leader. “You are correct that perhaps Silverhawk and Hawkmist had strayed too close to the frays of the code in their friendship with Bubblebeam. I warned Silverhawk of such when he told me about her. If you deem punishment necessary then we will accept it, but I do still ask you to consider the benefits that could come from welcoming a fully-trained warrior into our ranks.”
Her eyes slid towards Silverhawk and Hawkmist, narrowed and with a silent warning: they will not protest punishment or insist they did nothing wrong. If that was how their leader saw it, then they would accept it with grace. Or she’d have their ears in an instant.

SILVERHAWK
The darker the weather...
Silverhawk’s eyes slid to the side at another council member’s approach. He was tempted to curl his lip and sneer at Sunflare, but he withheld the expression. He smiled placidly instead. Get going, he hissed in the privacy of his mind, you weren’t summoned for a reason. Mouse-brain... But then the ruddy tom was retreating, so Silverhawk should have been free to turn his attention where it mattered--but he did not miss the words of Leopardstar’s dismissal. My not calling your name today is a mark in your favor. Silverhawk wanted to bristle but he wouldn’t allow himself to. His tail twitched, threatening to lash, but he stayed that movement as well. It dawned on him suddenly that this would not be a smooth process--that, despite doing nothing wrong, he’d found himself in trouble. Out of favor. When he turned to Leopardstar again it was easier to notice the agitation in her eyes. He had been more focused on Bubblebeam upon strolling over; he hadn’t noticed the quiet fury that rolled off his leader. He felt sick suddenly, and angry, and done with this conversation before it’d properly began.
Thankfully it was not long before Pineblossom approached. Silverhawk flicked his tail against her flank as she settled down beside him, feeling a little calmer with her presence. But no sooner than she’d made her way over did Leopardstar begin to speak, and her words incensed him all over again. Her tone was even, but every word gave Silverhawk the impression she felt she was scolding kits. It took great effort not to press his claws through the soft earth, but he managed. How dare she speak not only to him, but to two of the cats he held in high regard, like that? He could at least understand being critical of Bubblebeam, as she was an outsider, and she had broken her oath to SkyClan to come here… but that left a sour taste in his mouth as well.
And the talk of punishments! Silverhawk felt furious. His pupils constricted to tight slits but he remained otherwise composed, even though his throat itched with the desire to shout and rage. Punishment--as if he’d done anything wrong! She should have been grateful he was smart enough to do this legally rather than breaking the Code. Would she rather find out he had gone entirely behind her back and fully taken a mate in another Clan? A sniff was another in the small signs of his temper. Embarrassment made Silverhawk’s pelt crawl while indignation dripped hot down his throat. He wanted, terribly, to box Leopardstar.
He took a deep breath and his maw opened and he was slightly afraid of what would come out---and then he heard Pineblossom’s voice. His mouth shut with a click and his eyes slid to the side to observe her. A little bit of annoyance crept down his nape over losing the chance to speak first, but he could not maintain much frustration toward his mother. He let her speak, and her words were true. She was tactful enough to leave out the fact that he had gone and done the foolish thing of catching feelings, and this required a small twisting of words, but they were true nonetheless. It was a surprise to hear Pineblossom had met Bubblebeam recently. But… it was nice to hear. It allowed a bit of warmth to break through the storm of upset that whirled within Silverhawk. Especially the way she spoke of Bubblebeam-- clearly, she approved of her. Silverhawk’s chin lifted a little with the observation, and he felt, if only marginally, better.
Pineblossom went on talking, and he went on listening. His whiskers twitched at the assertion that he and Hawkmist had toed the line of the Code too closely. Pineblossom had said as much before, but he did not like hearing it again, especially when he was already agitated. And the idea that they would accept any punishment doled out to them! Silverhawk wanted to scoff but was, as he had been, quiet. He did not miss the look Pineblossom sent them, though his own eyes quickly slid away from it. He was not in trouble with Pineblossom the way he was with Leopardstar, but her glance still made his stomach turn sourly.
Silverhawk looked first to Hawkmist, then Bubblebeam--both cats he loved dearly, even if admitting the word made his tongue crawl--meeting and holding each of their gazes for a few moments. His paws felt a little steadier when he found their eyes. Frustration and distress still beat around in his chest, but when he swallowed and turned finally to Leopardstar, he found it easier to speak without fear of risking his position.
Before he opened his mouth, Silverhawk bowed his head in a low nod, a gesture of deep respect. ”I apologize, Leopardstar,” the words tasted foul in his mouth, but they came out smooth, ”for causing you any frustration and making you doubt senior warriors--council members.” Silverhawk licked his lips. His head remained bowed for a moment before he looked up again and sought his leader’s eyes. ”I wanted to speak to you about this directly before Bubblebeam came to the Clan. But it was only recently that she expressed her commitment to leaving. I hadn’t expected her to come so soon.
“What Pineblossom says is true. I have known Bubblebeam for a little while, through chance encounters at the border and Gatherings. She has always been kind to me and respectful of our Clan. While we have maintained a friendship with each other--and she has recently come to foster one with Hawkmist--neither of us had lost sight of our loyalties. I am a warrior of ShadowClan before all else, and Bubblebeam never led me to believe she thought maliciously of her home Clan. It isn’t a lack of loyalty that guides her paws away; SkyClan has just become inhospitable to her, and Bubblebeam made the decision to choose her own path rather than stagnating.” Silverhawk’s ear twitched. Why did he need to explain this? Leopardstar said herself that they spoke at the border. His sourness rose again but he swallowed it down before continuing to speak.
”So, I offered her one. A path forward. Like Pineblossom said, I thought her talent as a warrior would prove to be an asset to our Clan. She is already a fully-trained warrior, and a formidable one at that.” Silverhawk’s eyes slid to Bubblebeam again, roaming appreciatively across her scars before returning to Leopardstar. ”Bubblebeam told me she was going to leave SkyClan either way. It didn’t matter where she went, so long as she left. The life of a rogue is not one for Clan-born cats, and...” he recalled the last Gathering, the conversation with her brother, and settled on, ”she has few connections elsewhere.”
Silverhawk did not know if he was performing well. He had to be, for Bubblebeam’s sake, but he could not read Leopardstar’s expression. He swallowed and went on, ”Bubblebeam is forthright and she has a good heart. She is intelligent and capable and I am sure she will adapt to life in the marsh. As will she adapt to a new surrounding of Clanmates. She can make a friend of nearly anyone.” His tail flipped to flick against Hawkmist’s side. ”And she would not betray ShadowClan for nothing. Again: it’s only the extremity of her circumstance that drives her to break her original oath. Bubblebeam is nothing near the malicious type.”
Silverhawk took a breath. He had to grit his teeth for a moment to brace himself for the next part. His head bowed again and his jaw relaxed. ”And again… I apologize, Leopardstar.” He said quietly. ”I understand that, while within the Code, our friendship comes close to breaking it.” Silverhawk swallowed and squeezed his teeth together for a second again before he continuing on. ”If you see fit to punish me--us--then so be it. I will not protest whatever you deem fits the circumstance.” He lifted his head and blinked earnestly at Leopardstar. ”But I assure you, I only had everyone’s best intentions in mind. Bubblebeam will be a good fit for ShadowClan, I promise you.”

Hawkmist
Bend me, break me, breaking down is easy...
Pineblossom’s arrival was a steadying presence, and Hawkmist was relieved for it. Especially when Leopardstar began to speak, for it was a mixture of the need to ensure Bubblebeam’s security and not wanting to remove Pineblossom’s high opinion of him that kept him clamping his jaw shut instead of opening his mouth and letting out the swell of anger that surged in his chest. Humiliation mixed in with it, combining into a defensiveness that begged him to take action, an urge he fought not to give into.
Still, his tail lashed and his ears laid back before he tried to reign in his body language too. In lieu of being able to lash out the way he wants to, his body simply winds up tighter and tighter, every muscle locking in place in an exercise of self-control. This wasn’t a petty squabble with Silverhawk or a consequence-less shouting match with his dad. This was his leader, and this was important. So he had to learn to. Shut. Up.
At least Silverhawk was as tense as he was, making him feel validated in the rage, and at least Pineblossom spoke first. She was far more polite and succinct than he would have the ability to be, though he twitched at the idea that he had done any wrongdoing. Neither had Silverhawk, for that matter. Hawkmist might be aware he had… other feelings for Bubblebeam, but Hawkmist knew him well enough to know he wouldn’t be stupid enough to cross the lines of cross-clan romance. As for Hawkmist, he simply… He just liked Bubblebeam, there was nothing else to it. They’d only spoken a handful of times. He hadn’t done anything wrong, crossed any borders, broken any rules. Were they to meet in battle, he would still choose his own clan over hers. Obviously. There was no reason to punish either of them. But when he caught Pineblossom’s meaningful gaze, he sullenly looked away and knew he would have to swallow his pride, whatever he thought. He hated feeling as though he’d already let Pineblossom down in some way.
He glanced up enough to meet deep forest green when Silverhawk caught his gaze, and there he found stability again. If no one else would have his back in this, Silverhawk would, always. He would have his too. There was comfort in that. He relaxed, incrementally, from his tension, and when Silverhawk shifted his gaze away again Hawkmist’s moved to find Bubblebeam’s eyes, and he was able to breathe deep again. Soft pale green, underlaid with tension. He wanted her here, he would accept whatever consequences it took. There was something calming about seeing her too.
Silverhawk began to speak, picking up where Pineblossom left off, and Hawkmist watched him. Silverhawk’s voice was calm and sure, despite Hawkmist being able to read the aggravation under his pelt. He wrinkled his nose, just slightly, at Silverhawk emphasizing him when he mentions Bubblebeam’s ability to befriend anyone. He doesn’t disagree, but he still makes a face. But then, it was his turn, and he couldn’t avoid looking at his leader any longer.
Hawkmist’s tail twitched once, and he took a deep breath and mustered all of the tact and self-control he had. His voice was still gruff when he spoke, but he managed to maintain something close to an even tone for him. He followed Silverhawk’s lead and dipped his head in apology and respect. “It’s as they both said,” He said quietly. “Bubblebeam and I met by chance a few times at the border or at gatherings. She was kind and easy to speak with. She made an impression on me.”
“Especially after learning of her friendship with Silverhawk, whose opinion I value greatly, I thought highly of her. But we both were mindful of our loyalties. My first priority is Shadowclan and always has been, and I never wish to make you doubt that, Leopardstar.” It was a struggle to maintain respectful eye contact, to keep his emotions in check. It felt like he was holding his breath. He wasn’t any good at tiptoeing around his words like this, and he hated the amount of attention currently on him.
“When we spoke about her decision to leave Skyclan, it had already been made. As Silverhawk said, Skyclan had become somewhere she couldn’t stay. She was simply deciding where to go from there, and asked my opinion as a friend. I thought it would be smarter to stay within the clans. Her compassion and honesty stood out to me, and she seemed both a good warrior and a good cat. She seemed… like she could be a good fit here. I thought the suggestion of her coming to Shadowclan could be beneficial to both her and to us.” Hawkmist took a deep breath. “I made the suggestion of the possibility, but I never intended to overstep my place or approach the lines of the warrior code.”
Hawkmist fought his jaw not to clench as he dipped his head once more and said, “I apologize as well,” He said. “And I will accept any punishment you deem necessary.”

Standing alone, standing here surrounded by strangers in a distinctly unfamiliar camp, still didn't make Bubblebeam question her decision--but she couldn't deny the way that her fur prickled uncomfortably with each and every added set of eyes staring at her, and the cold and commanding voice of Leopardstar calling out over the evening air. However, the raw edge of anxiety found itself soothed in a moment by the appearance of two cats. First... Silverbird. A pair of forest green eyes sought hers, before sliding casually away to look at his Clanmates. But after the frequency of their meetings, she knew him. She saw the way that his eyes kept darting back to hers, the way that his whiskers twitched as if holding a calm facial expression through great difficulty. Even sitting further away as he was, his presence washed away the harshest fears lingering on the edges of her consciousness. Then, not far behind him came Hawkmist, his lanky, ghost-like form appearing as if an apparition. His yellow gaze met hers, and then... the smile. That smile, so brief, but so honest and natural and full of so much undisguised care and warmth that Bubblebeam couldn't help but reciprocate. A small answering smile crept onto her face, directed first at Hawkmist, then at Silverbird, and even briefly shown to the belatedly-recognized Pineblossom before she schooled her face back into seriousness at Leopardstar's tone. This had only begun. She'd done her part as well as she could. Now she had to hand over the burden to her friends and hope that their eloquence did not fail them. It was out of her paws for now.
The way that the ShadowClan leader spoke to the three cats she'd named, the unnaturally even tone with such stern and even heartless words, nearly made Bubblebeam flinch. They hadn't done anything wrong--why was Leopardstar so upset with them? Was simply speaking to cats across the border cause for such harsh verbiage? Well, maybe she and Silverbird had crossed it once or twice, but certainly no one else knew that. She'd never understood the condemnation of the bonds of friendship across Clans, and she saw now the results, and their consequences. With the careful attention she paid, she couldn't miss the way that the two toms reacted. It was impossible to miss the way that Silverbird's shoulders tightened uncomfortably, eyes narrowed, or the lashing of Hawkmist's tail and the pinning back of his ears. They were being scolded for her treachery. They were bearing this indignity for her sake. It wasn't fair. And... she couldn't unhear the words directed at her, either. Was this what Leopardstar thought of her... and what Gramma Wolf thought, too? Was that all she was? Someone who couldn't be trusted to abandon others, no matter how much they cared about her. An oath-breaker, a traitor. Not just an outsider, but an enemy. They weren't unwarranted labels, but they stung. Bubblebeam kept her back straight, even when her paws trembled. She wouldn't back down from this. She would contain her cowardice. She'd known this would be hard. She could take it, if she had to. But the worst part was that, as true as those words were, she couldn't stand how they were being used against her friends.
Silverbird and Hawkmist didn't deserve this embarrassment, this punishment just for being associated with her. They hadn't done anything wrong. They had never been anything but kind and caring to her, moreso at times than even her own family, and this was how she repaid them? By showing up in their camp and destroying the trust that their leader had placed in them? How could she do this to those who had never shown her anything other than unconditional gentleness and goodwill? If not for the many assurances they'd given her, she might have opened her mouth to take it back, to beg that they'd never done anything wrong and she had only mistakenly called their names. But she could not take it back--it would be a disservice to the sacrifices they'd already made. So she locked her teeth together, but the anguish deep in her light green eyes at the pain she caused the two toms who meant so much to her was impossible to disguise.
Leopardstar finished her part, with her threat hanging lowly in the air, tension bearing down on the small group like the pressure of an oncoming hailstorm. First Pineblossom spoke--the cat that Bubblebeam knew least. The stocky senior warrior's words were eloquent and well-spoken, sensible and intelligent. She could see why a cat like her would be placed on the "council," whatever that meant in a context like this. As always, the resemblance to Rainfrost was palpable--though thinking of her uncle admittedly sent a pang to her heart, remembering the last conversation that they'd had. She shook it off to focus on the here and now. Time for reminiscence later. Quietly she decided that once this was all over, if it ended in a way that allowed such a conversation, she ought to thank Pineblossom profusely for being willing to speak up in her defense. The points that she brought up were all good ones, even though they'd only met once. She didn't quite miss the insinuation that Leopardstar was correct to be so hostile to her Clanmates--a thought that Bubblebeam vehemently disagreed with, though she had no place to say such a thing--but that may have been nothing more than a gesture to placate the angry leader. All in all, it was a good beginning to this conversation, despite the bumpy way it'd started, but Pineblossom could only do so much. After all, she was only there because Silverhawk was her son. It was a motherly kindness and nothing more. The two who'd really invited her here would have to take on the brunt of the explaining. Despite all her desperate desire to help, the soft gray-furred warrior could only bite her tongue and stay silent. They had to speak now. She had to trust them.
Silverbird met her eyes. Through her gaze, even with the contained stress and worry and pain, Bubblebeam did her best to give him the slightest of nods. You've got this. He could do this. He'd charmed her effortlessly; surely his eloquence would not fail to ease Leopardstar's mood. If anyone could do such a thing, it was him... though she hated having to force his paw like this. But something behind his handsome face tightened, and after one last glance at Hawkmist--and something passed between them that she knew she would likely never understand--he spoke, and his voice remained as smooth and warm as it had ever been. The apology must have been difficult, but it was the words after them that felt like a physical blow against her aching heart. "I hadn’t expected her to come so soon." Was all this animosity entirely her fault, then? Perhaps if she'd managed to suffer through a few more days, then this meeting would have been easier for all involved. Had her weakness ruined some well-laid plan of his? Maybe he had been frustrated with her appearance, even angry that she'd messed it up. She should've waited. He was being yelled at by his leader, and it was all because of her. With or without Ploverwing's death, she ought to have remained in her stasis for a while longer. She'd done it for so long; what would a few more days be? Of course, it was far more likely that she was overthinking this, looking for some explanation for the many uncomfortable sensations pressing outwards on her frame from deep inside her. But it seemed as likely an explanation as any.
Still, she swallowed the many conflicting emotions, and soon another one joined them--the buzzing heat that always accompanied any interaction with Silverbird. Even when speaking to someone else, the merest hint of his voice made it feel as if something fluttery and feathered had been trapped inside of her chest. His eyes seemed to leave a path of fire where they traced her form, looking at her ugly blemishes and scars as if they were flowers adorning her pelt, a decoration instead of a deformity. After everything she'd done to him, how could he still look at her like that? And the compliments that he laid at her paws! Though this was the entire point of their agreement--that he would convince Leopardstar to take her in--it suddenly took every part of Bubblebeam's willpower to keep her face straight. Smiling foolishly at flattery would not do her any favors. And yet... and yet. If he truly thought even half those things of her, how could she bear it? She was not intelligent, and the word "formidable" had certainly never been applied to her before, not with her string of catastrophic failures and pathetic, sobbing uselessness. Talent did not seem quite honest, either, if she were to say it of herself. But she could not say anything in her defense against either the brutally stern or the undeserved praise. She kept her tongue glued to the roof of her mouth, even through the blood-burning frustration she felt towards the necessity of his apologies. I'm so sorry, Silverbird. I'll make it up to you--I promise.
Then her eyes locked onto those of Hawkmist. Piercing yellow, gazing right through her. The first time they'd met, the angles of his face had seemed so hard and powerful. How did they now make such an expression? One of longing, of shared stress, but of strength derived from her presence? Just like the way that she felt bolstered, like the rough bark of a tree pressed into her shoulders to keep her standing tall, simply by seeing him. The bond of friendship they shared--that was the word, right, for this flame that sparked within her every time she thought about him?--softened his edges, just as it kept her balanced. Thank the stars he was here. He turned finally to say his piece. Though his voice carried none of the suave charisma of Silverbird's, nor the plain, practical logic of Pineblossom's tone, something about the gruffness tempered by his quiet honesty had a kind of pathos all its own. Bubblebeam listened intently, near-awed by how the normally growly tom spoke with such respect when it had become sincerely necessary. She saw the way his ears flicked, and how his fur barely kept from bristling with effort, but he did it. And he did it for her. He--all three of them--had done this for her. No one had forced them to. They'd decided to stand by her, an outsider, an enemy, when it actively caused them humiliation and a loss of respect. Renewed, her adoration for Silverbird and Hawkmist only grew, and her esteem for Pineblossom did as well. All three of them had done so much for her. She would repay this debt for the rest of her life, if they let her.
Finally the three had said their piece. Though perhaps it would be more prudent for her to remain silent and allow their well-said words to linger in Leopardstar's mind without complicating it further, Bubblebeam could no longer swallow back the mixture of gratitude and remorse and guilt and nervousness that boiled within her. "What they've said is true," she said, willing her voice to stay calm and not shake. Pale green eyes locked onto the immovable form of Leopardstar. "I was going to leave SkyClan anyway. Silverhawk and Hawkmist had become my friends, not because any of them did not care for their Clan, but because their good qualities drew me to them. We spoke only at the border and at Gatherings. My conversation with Pineblossom was only by coincidence. The three of them broke no rule, that I know of, and they have nothing to apologize for--I'm the one who came to beg for acceptance. They graciously offered to assist me out of the goodness of their hearts, not because they had to. They chose to be honest because they respected you, and they wanted to give me a fair chance." The words she'd been keeping inside came tumbling out in their regular fashion, over and over each other in a way that she hoped remained coherent, even as she hated the fact that she couldn't sound as sure of herself or concise or sensible as her friends. "I would've left SkyClan--I couldn't stay there any longer--and I could've gone anywhere--but because of them, I came here. But I'm not staying just because of them. I... I want to have a home that I can choose for myself, and I've chosen here. I'll work hard, I'll fight, I'll do whatever I have to. That's better, I think, than remaining in one place just because I was born there even though I feel no bonds of loyalty. Choosing ShadowClan means that I, I'll be more dedicated to it than I would've been if I took it for granted, so I'll do my best. Whatever you say. Just don't be mad at them, please. If you're going to punish anyone, it should be me. They didn't do anything wrong. They said that you're a fair leader, and this would be a good place to live, because they love ShadowClan. I... I want to love it, too, like them. And I will. Just give me a chance." Bubblebeam cut herself off before her pleas could grow any more desperate and hurt her case. She stood stone-still, tension in her frame so tight that she couldn't even flick the end of her fluffy tail. If she were to be cast out she'd have nowhere to go, and Hawkmist and Silverbird would have borne this disgrace for nothing. She had to be accepted.

i've given up on counting blessings
As the cats she had gathered spoke, Leopardstar listened. She was silent, mulling over their words as they reached her ears. Of course Pineblossom was only tangential to this; involved just enough for her name to be raised. It was enough to make her feel a twinge of guilt for the accusation she had leveled at a cat she considered a dear friend, and one who was typically quite level-headed in comparison to her.
(In another world, she mused, Pineblossom might have been a good deputy. A better counter to her temper, perhaps; able to find the reasonable and rational solutions she so often overlooked. As it stood, she found herself relying on her counsel often enough. But those stones had been cast long ago, and it was Leopardstar who stood as the counter to Sablestrike's sharper claws.)
Then, when the three cats she had called upon had each said their piece, Bubblebeam spoke again. Leopardstar took a deep breath, gathering her patience: the formerly-SkyClan warrior had done nothing to earn her ire while in ShadowClan company. She had turned her back on loyalties, but those loyalties were not to ShadowClan; and Leopardstar had laid out the treatment she could expect quite plainly. Given that Bubblebeam was standing here and seemed willing to bear it, she was due a certain level of respect and courtesy.
"Be that as it may, Bubblebeam, it would seem that they have each tread along the edges of their loyalties in their devotion to you." Her tone was softer, now, and not unkind. "Truthfully, I don't know much about SkyClan philosophy--it has been seasons since we sought shelter in your camp--but ShadowClan, at least, is expected to regard Clan as kin. Your loyalty is to your Clan, above all else, because they are your family. You may have friends in other Clans, as the Code dictates--and I would not ask any cat to sever their existing family ties any more than is necessary--but it is my understanding that that part of the Code is meant to cover casual friendships. This sort of dedication is something I expect my warriors to reserve for their Clanmates."
Or potential mates, all things considered; but so far they each remained adamant that there was only friendship between them, and she would believe them until and unless they were somehow proven wrong.
"Please understand, loyalties spread too thin are a danger to us all. Our lives are difficult and dangerous to begin with, even moreso than the other Clans. The life of a ShadowClan cat is one rife with hardship, which makes it all the more important that we can rely on our community. Silverhawk in particular, as a member of ShadowClan's honored council, is expected to keep the Clan as his first priority. That he has somehow found the time, between all of his duties as a warrior and council member, to form such a close bond with you; and that I heard about all of this from you rather than from him... It places doubts in his dedication to his post, and to his Clan. I have to ask; should you have gone to ThunderClan, or RiverClan, or WindClan, instead of here with me, would anything change? Hawkmist, on the other paw, doesn't have that extra responsibility... But he still did not come to me to provide context for your request. Once again, the first time his name was mentioned in our conversation was by you."
She turned her attention then to Silverhawk. "Silverhawk, it is apparent that you have neglected your post; if not in attention to your duties, then in the spirit of them. As such, you will be relieved from your duties as a council member until such time as your loyalties are no longer in doubt, should such a day come to pass. Until then, a new council member will be appointed in your stead. Pineblossom, if you have any suggestions for who might be a worthy candidate, please let me know after this conversation is finished. In addition, Silverhawk, I expect you to assist with apprentice duties for the next half-moon."
Then there was Hawkmist to contend with. "Hawkmist... I respect your honesty, and your dedication to someone you care for, but you must remember that as much as you may worry for your friends, your Clan is not only your home; and it is not something you can offer freely without consulting others. Before suggesting that she come to us, you should have brought up the subject with me so that I wouldn't be blindsided by it. Along with Silverhawk, I ask that you assist with apprentice duties for the next half-moon."
To Pineblossom, she inclined her head. "I suppose I should have expected it was something like that, rather than leaping to conclusions," she acknowledged. "For that, I should apologize. Still, there is something I must ask of you--given your awareness of her, while lacking the inherent closeness with both Silverhawk and Hawkmist, I believe you would be the ideal choice to help Bubblebeam acclimate properly to ShadowClan life."
Then, turning at last to the cat this meeting was actually about, she offered a soft smile. "She has made the choice to walk this path, even knowing what it is bound to entail. As such, until such time as her loyalty is reasonably called into question, she is to be afforded the same respect and courtesy that any ShadowClan cat would receive; though the privileges of a warrior, to wander the marsh unaccompanied and to know the secrets within, will wait until we can be sure she has thoroughly settled--for her safety as well as ours. If no concerns are raised in that time, I imagine the vote of confidence won't be an issue."
She stepped forward, touching her nose to Bubblebeam's shoulder as one might during a ceremony. "On behalf of my Clanmates, I am honored to welcome you into ShadowClan, Bubblebeam--and I wish you luck with the trials you have left to face."

PINEBLOSSOM
If I could tell you how I feel...
Pineblossom knew, as Leopardstar spoke, that Silverhawk and Hawkmist both would be furious with this outcome. Silverhawk especially, with how he was being removed from the council. She could not help but agree, though. Friendship was healthy, but Silverhawk had told Pineblossom herself about how he had fallen in love with the SkyClan cat. Though no words about it were spoken to Leopardstar now, and Silverhawk had promised to not act on it or let it impact his role as a warrior, Pineblossom wasn’t so sure that would have been the case, had they met on the battlefield. Friendships could grow from circumstantial meetings and seeing one another at Gatherings—to fall in love implied that Silverhawk had gone to see her far more times than he may have told her or Leopardstar. That was a dangerous path to walk when it came to loyalty to the clan.
So, as angry as Silverhawk will likely be, she could not help but agree.
Pineblossom nodded and bowed her head respectfully to her leader. “I would be honored to help Bubblebeam grow used to our clan. I’ll show her the territory and teach her our customs." Leopardstar was accepting her into the clan after all, which was the best outcome.
She straightened and looked towards Bubblebeam to give her a small smile. It would take some getting used-to, having her here, but Pineblossom was certain that her presence would become normal after a while.
