Today was one of the cooler days that Greenleaf offered. The breeze was gentle and it rustled the leaves, creating a wistful chorus. As much as Silverdusk loved their kits, and loved devoting herself to them wholly, days as perfect as this one made her long for the warriors den once again. Only in duty though, thinking about returning to a nest barren of Wiggleworm still, and more than likely always would, crushed their heart. The moons had stretched on, their kits had been born and then aged some, and still her mate remained unseen. Vinecrawler had grown restless waiting on his brother to resurface, and had gone out looking for him. He too had not returned. The family they had created for themselves was rapidly dwindling, and she was desperate to cling on to it. Desperate even more so to occupy her spiralling thoughts, and to perhaps forge new connections within their clan. Silverdusk rose on steady paws, gaze lingering on their kits, watching the rise and fall of their slumbering chests, before stepping out into camp. They made their way over to the entrance, settling onto their haunches. It was hard to keep her green eyes from fixating back on the nursery, but the silver warrior wanted to do something for her clan, and for their mind. “I am going hunting, if anyone would like to join me.” she announced.

Within a few minutes, a small party had accumulated by the camp entrance. Silverdusk greeted each of them, and then led the way out of the gorse tunnel. Emerging the other side was like a splash of rain on a hot day. A pleased purr rumbled in their throat, it felt so good to see something aside from the insides of camp. She didn’t lead the patrol too far out though, if anything happened Silverdusk still wanted to be within ten fox lengths or so of camp. They were not taking any risks. Their kits would be safe, or the forest would burn. It was as simple as that. She smiled, whiskers twitching as they looked for signs of prey. There was a fluttering up above, and acting on instinct alone, the tall molly leapt into the air. Her aim was true and pure, one paw deftly swatted the bird off course, and her jaws snapped closed, catching it on the wing. She landed smoothly, with a proud chirrup and swiftly ended the birds life. How long had it been since they’d hunted, had actually moved with real intent? It felt good, really good to be in their element again. It felt even better to know that even after moons in camp, Silverdusk had not lost their edge.

Sageroot was also on this patrol, ever ready to help provide for her clan. She stood perfectly still, with the exception of her ears swiveling in all directions. Suddenly, she tensed. The deputy slipped into her hunting crouch, honing in on the scuffling in the undergrowth.

It was a narrow miss. Oh well, anyone can make mistakes.
