Subject: Foxkit's Apprentice Ceremony Thu 27 Jun 2024 - 16:45
The night had been hot. The day would bring no relief, Falconmoon knew. Greenleaf was here in full swing. He leaped up onto the Tall Branch and called forth a meeting. "Let all of those old enough to climb a tree gather beneath the Tallbranch for a clan meeting!" He'd be merciful and organize patrols closer to the water today, but eventually, the clan would have to acclimate.
And if the world don't break, I'll be shaking it...
It’d been so unbearably hot lately. Foxkit hated it. He was learning rather quickly that green-leaf was a miserable season, and he was pretty sure he was going to hate every minute of it. The promise of leaf-fall, with apparently color-changing leaves on the other side, couldn’t get close fast enough. At least there were distractions to pull his mind off the heat, like Falconmoon climbing the Tallbranch. Foxkit’s ears swiveled forward eagerly and he rolled onto his paws. The deputy getting up there meant an apprentice was about to be named… and Foxkit and his littermates were a little over six moons old. Suddenly eager, he shuffled forward to take his place among the crowd and turned his face up toward Falconmoon to listen.
Once the clan had gathered, Falconmoon turned his eyes to Foxkit. Foxkit step forward. You have reached the age of six moons and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From today until the day you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Foxpaw. Sorrelmist will be your mentor. I trust her to teach you how to be an exceptional hunter and fearsome warrior of Skyclan."
With the meeting coming to an end, Falconmoon gave the apprentice and warrior time to greet one another before leaving the Tallbranch.
Sorrelmist lifted her head at her uncle’s voice, quietly approaching the crowd. Likely, it was another ceremony - they had so many young members of the Clan now. Perhaps it was her half sister’s time, or her cousin’s litter - or perhaps none at all. It did not take long for her suspicions to be confirmed - a new apprentice would start their training, to bulk out the ranks.
Fox.
A bitter taste filled her mouth at the mention of the predator, her shoulder and leg dully throbbing. The wounds had long since healed, leaving behind a long scar, though the pain had not entirely faded. She could not admit outloud how she despised the prefix as she felt the beast’s warmth breath on her fur, nor could she allow the sour expression on her face to be misconstrued. This is not about you, she told herself quietly. It was a great celebration for their Clan, for their kin. Instead, the warrior wore a small smile as she observed her cousin’s son as he made his way up to Falconmoon.
Sorrel?
Had her uncle misspoken, or had she misheard? A mentor…Are you sure? She wanted to shout as the blood grew louder in her ears. The warrior took a moment, followed by a breath, then stepped forward. However off guard she had been taken, pride warmed her chest. She was acceptable enough to mentor the new generation - or atleast, for now she was - even if she had spent the past few moons disconnected, venturing further and further afield in search of her father and half brother. If only her father could see her now. Sorrelmist leant forward and pressed her nose to the apprentice’s nose,
“Congratulations Foxpaw, the clan is proud of you,” she offered the young tom a smile, “we will begin your training tomorrow. For now, enjoy your last night.”
