Dovetail preferred fishing to hunting land prey. Still, there was no knowing when another disaster would strike and poison the rivers. Even remembering that time set his teeth on edge--remembering the dry scratchiness that thirst brought to his throat, and the dead-eyed languor that settled over camp like a smoke cloud. If that ever happened again... he had to be prepared. Of course he hoped it wouldn't with every bone in his body. Still, Egretswoop had taught him well, and he was... passable at hunting land prey. If I grew up in ThunderClan, I'd be a lot better at this. What a useless thought. All he had to focus on right now was hunting. Right now, this afternoon, with this patrol, in the beech copse. His eyes caught on a nearby mouse skittering around the roots of a tall tree. Blue eyes narrowed, he dropped low into a hunting crouch. Fishing was easier; he found it much less complicated, sitting by the banks and waiting for prey to come to you. This time he'd have to stalk quietly to the mouse and catch it before it noticed him. Unfortunately, though his form had no issue, he stumbled on a root right before he managed to get close enough. The mouse vanished behind a bush. Dovetail glared after it, lashing his tail once, then returned to the patrol. Hopefully everyone else had better luck.
Dovetail attempts to catch a mouse... Failure. -3 SP
"How've you been, brother?" Swandive was glad for the chance to patrol alongside Dovetail. Things had been changing recently, with Perchstar's death, Poppystar rising to leadership... She was happy to spend time with any of her family that she could.
The pale warrior fell silent as Dovetail attempted to catch a mice and missed. Turning her own gaze toward the forest floor, movement at the base of one of the trees caught her attention. Without thinking, Swandive leaped toward it. Something had startled the bird however, and it flew off. And Swandive let out a yowl as sharp talons raked her back.
"Piece of foxdung!" She hissed, twisting to snap her jaws at the angry bird. So much for hunting in peace...
Swandive has attempted to catch a bird for -3ep, catch unsuccessful! And summoned a wild Hawk!
Hawk used Swoop for -15 ep, dealing -9 damage to Swandive. Swandive used Bite for -5 ep, dealing 8 damage.
Hawk 32 / 40 hp (40 - 8) 110 / 125 ep (125 - 15)
Swandive 41 / 50 hp (50 - 9) 122 / 130 ep (127 - 5)
Rookflight would have enjoyed a peaceable patrol. So far, it had been just that. The walk to the Beech Copse was quiet; pleasant. Swandive rose conversation with her brother as they each began to spread out, but Rookflight didn’t mind the break in silence. That too was pleasant in its own way. Just as they began to slip off, rounding between trees, the sharp cry of an angry bird and an exclamation from Swandive had them quickly turning back around. The hope for a peaceful hunt was quickly forgotten. Before it could get too far from Swandive’s back and take to the air again, Rookflight leapt. He wasn’t able to get his paws around the hawk firmly enough to pin it, but he was able to pull his claws through its chest and loose some feathers and skin before it, squawking, struggled out from beneath his weight. Rookflight hissed after it before looking quickly to Swandive to ask, ”Are you alright?”
Rookflight used Claw, dealing 9 damage and costing 5 EP.
Sprucebark had joined this patrol but was behind them when by the time the hawk was causing problems he was still too far behind to even notice it.
He was there physically but his mind was far away thinking about the past, about perchstar. His mom was leader now and he hadnt seen her since then not that he wanted to interupt her from her busy schedule. He kicked a pebble along ahead of him and in doing so disrupted a bird he could have caught otherwise.
unbelievable
He was so out of form this type of blunder should have been trivial to avoid and usually he was so sharp in his ways of hunting.

Dovetail shook off the loss of the mouse and returned, gently bumping his tail against his sister's flank in response to her question. "I'm alright," he said honestly, half-shrugging. Aside from the mire of anxiety and strange thoughts, he really was doing fine. Nothing threatened him at the moment; all of his worries came inward rather than outward. He and his siblings were safe and sound at home. Though the concerns about Starlingflare and ThunderClan still bothered him if he gave them voice, he could simply choose to ignore them--and so he did, at this very moment. Idly he began the search for another piece of prey. Perhaps he'd actually catch this one. However, the pained hiss of Swandive caught his attention.
Adrenaline sped up his heartbeat. He turned quickly to see Swandive struggling against a large hawk that swooped out of nowhere. At least Rookflight was helping her. He'd never spoken to the warrior before, as he could recall; he'd have to thank them later for assisting. In the moment though, Dovetail unsheathed his claws with a fury. Nothing attacked his sister and lived. This hawk would die, and he'd drag its corpse back to camp so they could decorate their nests with its feathers. It had picked the wrong day to attack. The RiverClan warrior lunged, jumping through the air to catch the hawk before it managed to escape completely from Rookflight's claws. One heavy, dark-furred paw swiped it out of the air and sent it sprawling to the ground, sliced feathers flurrying around his face. As he landed, he glanced back towards his sister, light blue eyes alight with concern. "Swandive! Are you hurt?" Wait--they were missing someone, weren't they? There had been other warriors in this hunting patrol. Dovetail glanced behind to see a senior warrior whose name he could not quite remember dragging his feet on the ground, staring emptily at a few rocks instead of noticing the hubbub in the Beech Copse ahead of him. He glared for a moment, lashing his tail. What kind of warrior couldn't even assist against the attack of a smaller predator like a hawk? "Hey! Are you going to help, or not?" he demanded.
Dovetail used Claw, dealing 8 damage and costing 5 EP.
"I'm fine!" Swandive called in response to her brother. She thought she was fine, anyways. The cuts from those talons stung, but they weren't too deep, she hoped. Swandive wasn't going to stop to check until the bird was dealt with.
"Thanks, Rookflight." She aded, grateful for the help of her clanmates. There had been someone else on the patrol... Her eyes narrowed in displeasure at not seeing the senior warrior joining his clanmates in the fight, but maybe he was just too far back to hear. Swandive lashed out with her claws. If one of her clanmates wasn't here, she'd just have to make up for the loss.
Sprucebark was dazed out of his mind currently and had to blink several times as he processed the chaotic scene ahead of him as he caught up to the patrol. His clanmates were in trouble which snapped him somewhat into gear but his legs and paws felt akward and heavy. Ever since Perchstar's death and then getting his tail beat by his frienemy Stormwatcher he had been all out of sorts.
He caught up to them finally able to join in the fight to defend his clanmates.
"sorry, fell behind" he meowed quickly and formally as always as he glanced up at the sky looking for an opening to try and bat at the bird. He took a big swing with his front paws but missed completely empty air wishing past his paws.
Sprucebark misses completely
