Sunflare purred as he walked alongside his new apprentice. “What’s your favorite prey, Smokeypaw?” he mewed. “I want to show you how to hunt your favorite first so if you’re ever lost you won’t just be fed but fed well.”

Smokeypaw padded along dutifully, his head held high and his feathery tail waving in the air behind him. Today was his very first day on the territory, and Sunflare said they could learn how to hunt! He hoped he could impress his mentor - and maybe the Clan, too, if he caught something real impressive on his first hunt ever!
"Mice! Easy!" Mouse was the first real prey he'd ever tried. Leopardstar had brought them one to try the minute they were old enough - sliced it up into tiny pieces for each of the siblings. Sure, that might've made him biased, but nothing else hit like a good mouse. He purred, then seemed to remember his manners. This was an experienced warrior he was talking to, after all. Probably one of his mother's advisors. The tuxedo tom straightened his posture and cleared his throat. "That's a good idea, sir, thank you. Are mice difficult to catch?" Though he was eager, he wanted to be a good apprentice. Only kits were squeaky and excitable. Warriors were controlled and even-tempered. Being an apprentice, it seemed, meant trying to find a middle ground.

Sunflare smiled at his apprentice’s enthusiasm. Stars, why must we all outgrow that? “Mice are a fairly easy catch, especially after the rain. Their little legs are easily bogged down in the marsh. I remember my aunt told me once about how she was hunting after a storm and simply plucked one out of a mud puddle with no struggle at all! Now, watch and learn.” He took a deep breath. “I smell a mouse in that direction,” he whispered. “Now, I get low to the ground. Watch where you put your paws to make sure you don’t make a sound. Get as close as you can before you pounce.”
That… wasn’t good. Sunflare found himself staring down a fox. The tom drew himself to full height, bristling. “Smokeypaw, get behind me,” he mewed.
Not sure how to add additional dice rolls to an existing post, so I’m whipping out my trusty d6!
Sunflare leapt at the fox, but found himself knocked out of the air with a smack of a powerful paw. He landed on the ground with a hiss of pain.

"Oh, wow." The tom breathed, admittedly impressed by Sunflare's anecdote. His mentor seemed pretty cool - he was glad Sablestrike had paired them up. Before he could take note of anything the great tom was saying, though, a pointed black nose pushed through the undergrowth - and, shortly behind it, a snarling red fox. Oh, StarClan. Smokeypaw had never seen a fox before, but there was no mistaking what it was. From his mother's stories and what he'd heard from the warriors, this had to be one of the fearsome beasts. As much as he wanted to run and hide, he knew he had to stand his ground. This was a chance to prove himself and protect his Clan.
"Get behind you?" Smokeypaw looked at his mentor in disbelief. Was Sunflare crazy? There was no chance he was just going to hide behind the tom and let him do all the work. Or take all the glory. "No, this is my fight, too." Determination burned in his paws, slowly at first - then it grew into a roaring blaze. How dare this wretched thing steal their prey and encroach on ShadowClan territory? Bristling, Smokeypaw unsheathed his claws and sprung at the fox with a low growl. It didn't matter - the canine batted him away like nothing. Fox-dung. How were they supposed to fight this thing?

Rolling for fox, then Sunflare.
Sunflare tried to get up, but found his hind leg burning. It didn’t feel like he’d broken a bone, but he’d definitely injured something. The fox, meanwhile, slashed at his flank with its claws.

Another growl rose in Smokeypaw's throat. He didn't know how to fight! Sure, he'd been in his fair share of play fights, but a kit with sheathed claws wasn't even a quarter of the danger of a fox. He didn't know what to do. Relying on instinct and anger to guide him was his only choice. He wasn't upset he had to fight a fox (the opposite, really), but he was upset that it had already practically taken out his mentor. Is Sunflare okay? Smokeypaw didn't have time to check on him. Privately, he was a bit frustrated that the great tom hadn't been much help in this fight, but the element of surprise was a powerful advantage in a fight - it wasn't Sunflare's fault the fox had caught them off guard.
"Hey, dog-breath!" The long-furred tom snarled, the words rising like bile in his throat. As the fox turned away from Sunflare, Smokeypaw met it with long, hooked claws and gnashing teeth. His claws pierced the through the beast's skin into its fur, and he came away with blood staining his claws as he reeled back for another attack. It felt surprisingly good, fighting like this. Defending a seasoned warrior on his first day of training. Protecting his Clan's territory. "Hit me, mange pelt!" The adolescent spat, his normally soft blue gaze burning with hatred.

Rolling for fox, then Sunflare Accidentally only rolled once, but since it’s a hit it doesn’t matter.
Sunflare gasped as Smokeypaw took on the fox. “Smokey, no!” he called, but it was too late. The fox reached out and grappled Sunflare’s spine one more time before turning to focus all its attention on the apprentice. Sunflare panted as the taste of blood welled up in his mouth. He couldn’t move?
Sunflare is KO’ed.

Smokeypaw's eyes widened as he watched the fox tackle Sunflare. "Get up, Sunflare! Come on!" He rushed to his mentor's side, frantic, but still conscious enough of the scene before him to turn so his body was shielding Sunflare's from any outside attacks. It felt like his heart was going to go on beating right out of his chest. The tom was still breathing - panting, really - but he was bleeding pretty badly. He'd need Heatherberry, and quick.
For maybe the first time in his life, Smokeypaw was faced with a tough decision. Did he finish the fox off, here and now, banishing the threat from ShadowClan territory and earning a name for himself so young? The glory was intoxicating, sure, but would it pay off? He didn't think he could fight a fox off on his own. Then, the second option - did he grab Sunflare and flee, dragging the tom to safety? His mentor might be okay long enough for him to get his revenge on the fox, but it wasn't a gamble he was sure he wanted to take.
As he stood, frozen, paralyzed, the decision was made for him. The fox nipped at his heels, and the apprentice whirled around, snapping his teeth back at the canine. Satisfaction paired with thrill made his heart leap in his chest as he drew blood. The fox yipped, recoiling in pain as blood welled up around its nose. Smokeypaw fought off a smug grin as he noticed marks from his own fangs in the creature's fur before the situation came rushing back to him. Now's our chance! The tom kicked dirt in the fox's face, hoping it would distract the thing a bit longer, then turned back to Sunflare. "It's gonna be okay, Sun. I'll get you out of here. Can you lean on me?" His gaze flashed with worry. He leaned down to take the tom's scruff in his jaws, but he only grunted with the effort - the warrior was much too heavy. "C'mon, get up! Let's go!" Something about his tone felt pleading - as though he was begging Sunflare to be okay.
Smokeypaw is attempting to flee with Sun!
