POPPYSHINE
Just stop your crying...
A few days had passed since Perchstar’s death, and Poppyshine knew that she could not put off choosing a new deputy for much longer. She could not fulfill the duty of both leader and deputy, and most certainly not when they still lacked a medicine cat. As much as she would like to cling to what had been the norm for so long, things needed to move on and change. She needed a cat who would aid her and who could be relied upon to no only perform all the duties that were once Poppyshine’s, but also ensure that she was kept in check as a leader. Soon she would have to visit the moonstone and see StarClan for the first time to see if she was accepted as the next leader of RiverClan. There would need to be a cat left in charge, and better for it to be a cat she could entrust as deputy.
Poppyshine left the leader’s den early in the morning. Some cats were already stirring, probably ready to receive their morning duties from her, but rather than taking her usual spot where those duties were given out, she walked past it and stepped up onto the Willow Branch. When she turned to face the camp, her breath caught momentarily. There the spot below here where Perchstar’s body had been laid out just a few nights prior. And now from up here, the camp almost looked different in a way she could not describe. A change in perspective, perhaps.
The moment quickly passed and she cleared her throat. “All RiverClan cats, gather below the Willow Branch for a clan meeting.”

Cindersky T3 Warrior | RiverClan| she/her "i loved you like the sun."
Return to routine. Cindersky had decided to bank the recovery from grief on that. Maybe it was her downfall after the battle, the crux after Littlesplash. She wallowed. Perhaps if she did not now, it would not be so hard. Despite her telling herself that, her throat still burned. A headache from too many tears shed. The wound felt older now, like that dull ache after a knock. But it still hurt.
This was Poppyshines first call after Perchstars death. First true call as a leader, albeit without the name --star for now. She had tipped her nose to Larksprings ear as thought to say, 'I am going', and tiptoed out of the den. The sun was bright.

Swandive had stepped out of the warrior's den, glancing around for signs of Poppyshine. It was early, patrols would be going out soon, and she was eager to get going. Eager to get out of camp, in truth. The spot where Perchstar's body had been just days ago still lingered in her memory, though the leader had been given a burial and wasn't physically present. The state Perchstar had been in had not been a pleasant one, and the sting of being able to do nothing, of her clanmates being able to do nothing as the leader had passed on made Swandive's heart twist with discomfort and grief.
Poppyshine's call pulled the pale she-cat from her thoughts, and Swandive glanced up, watching as her former mentor stood on the willow branch. That meant bad news... Or a ceremony, to someone who was less pessimistic, perhaps. She had grown used to the meetings that did not bring any comfort to the clan over the past few seasons.
Still, Swandive found a spot among her gathering clanmates to sit below the willowbranch. A deputy would need to be chosen too now that Poppyshine would become leader... Swandive did not envy the new leader or anyone else having to bear the responsibility of the clan on their shoulders.

Snailpaw's head groggily stuck out of the Apprentice Den as he heard Poppyshine's call.
The whole of the clan up at Sunrise? Must be important.. but it also doesn't make it any nicer for Snailpaw to wake up at such an hour. Regardless, he heeded the call, padded over to the Willow Branch, and sat in a nifty neat loaf with his tail nicely wrapped around him.
What the meeting meant, he didn't know yet. But the curiosity of what it COULD be drove him to stay with full attention.

Kitespring never thought she'd ever dream of being deputy.
Maybe she technically had, as a young kit, but as soon as early apprenticehood she grew to dread the responsibility of watching over her clan, and she never felt like she could be the deputy that her clanmates needed her to be. But after seeing RiverClan so tattered by the losses - from back at the river to the war to Perchstar's sudden passing - a desire to help burned inside her. And it fueled her... her ambition. Stars, the Clans always worried about ambition and how it corrupts cats into pursuing more and more. What if it corrupts me? What if I turn out like Maplestar and end up killing Poppyshine to become leader? It was a horrid thought, and it was something Kitespring hoped would never happen.
Of course, at the very least there should be one deputy. If Poppyshine died before claiming her nine lives, it would be catastrophic for the clan, and Kitespring didn't know what they'd do in that situation. Maybe bring the medicine cat to StarClan to get a sign for who the next leader is? But they didn't have a medicine cat yet, so what then? Maybe a clan vote? She didn't know. But she also didn't want to pressure Poppyshine to choose - not after Perchstar's death.
They were always at the back of her mind, appearing every now and again as the russet she-cat waited patiently for a deputy ceremony.

All of RiverClan seemed to be in a stasis of mourning. Daily life continued, of course, as it always did... but without the figure that had been leading it for longer than most alive could remember. Dovetail had not known Perchstar personally. He'd seen her as an untouchable beacon of strength, a wise leader--and mostly, the cat responsible for his life in RiverClan. A life that he loved and wouldn't trade for anything. He felt odd when he thought about it, so he did his best not to think about her too much. The rest of the Clan had known her better. Mostly he did his best to be there for Murkyriver, who seemed distraught. Unlike at the death of her own mother, she didn't push him away as much this time. So when Poppyshine called out a summons, he accompanied Murkyriver to the center of camp. In the very back of his mind, he feared that Poppyshine had decided to cast him and his siblings out. Would she do so, if she knew of their origins? But he shoved that nagging fear away. It wasn't a logical worry.

ROOKFLIGHT
I would rather stay in bed, but...
The days since Perchstar’s passing were a blur. The perpetual dance of the sun and moon eluded Rookflight’s notice. They kept odd waking hours, and for a few brief revolutions of the earth, their new apprentice had been forgotten. They knew not whether to be angry or sad; both or neither. They just knew their body frequently trembled and their stomach twisted around its own emptiness. Soothing their hunger would not ease their heart, so Rookflight saw little point in it. Only when the pangs became unignorable would they eat, and even then only in small amounts. It was a tiring existence.
Like much else, Poppyshine’s call would have escaped Rookflight’s attention (and interest) if he weren’t already outside, sitting near the Willow Branch. His head angled slowly up to regard her where she stood. Something hot and unnameable boiled under his fur as he understood she was likely rising to name her new deputy. The thought of that made his stomach curl over something new. Rookflight swallowed the feeling down and got to their paws, padding out of the way to join the actual crowd. They found Cindersky and settled by her side as Larkspring joined as well.

Sprucebark glanced around as the meeting was called - it all felt so strange and foreign. It hadnt really settled in yet.
He licked at the wounds he had gotten from the fight and sat down stiffly. The scratch marks hurt so much.
He had not told anyone what had happened.
He went over and settled in next to Kitespring. She looked just as nervous about all this as he felt on the inside. He gently leaned against her and looked over to her. He would do his best to try and be there for her

Duckpaw was laying outside of the apprentice's den, head resting on their paw. Even as Poppyshine stood to address the Clan, the apprentice didn't seem keen on moving - but their gaze flickered over to Snailpaw as their fellow apprentice wandered from the den. ...They suppose they might as well act the part of a good Clan member, even if they didn't see much of a point to attend. This had to be the deputy ceremony, didn't it? They couldn't picture Poppyshine doing any other ceremony before that one was done... Which despite being of age that they could be deputy, they knew there name would never be uttered - after all, they were still an apprentice after all of this time.
Not that they would have been a good deputy even if they had their full name - who would want to rely on a cat who couldn't keep their eyes open half the time; a cat who had no future? ...They grimaced, more at themselves than anything - it didn't even feel good, this cynicism. The doubt and fear of forever being useless that swirled in their head felt terrible and while one small part of them screamed that it was a lie... The bleakness of never getting the answer they sought made the bitter thoughts weigh all the more. But they knew this attitude wasn't fit for such a moment of celebration - or mourning...Both, they supposed.
Perchstar was dead, the Stars bless her soul... But life carried on and a warrior would gain the mantle of deputy as Poppyshine was forced to take the title of leader. But who? Duckpaw didn't know - they didn't know any of their Clanmates all that well, truth be told outside of small acts of kindness here and there. Any could be good enough for it - or maybe not even good enough - but they would just have to trust in Poppyshine's judgement all the same.

She did not have much to say. Not ever, truthfully, but especially in recent days. The only thing that had changed, however, was how she acted. Instead of pushing every cat away in the name of being a silent sentry, her target had shifted. No longer did she have the direction that she once did in the previous months, and so she had focused to who felt closest to her. The very tom that she sat next to. She practically clung to him during the nighttime hours, their shared nest having become a particular haven for her recently. So, leaning just slightly against the tom, she was there to give him strength just as much as he was for her.

POPPYSHINE
Just stop your crying...
Her clanmates slowly shuffled forward, joining the gathering spot before the Willow Branch. They all looked so tired. Poppyshine was tired too. Grief was a heavy thing to carry, day in and day out. To name a deputy would seal this as being real, just as much as burying her had. And when Poppyshine got her lives…well, that would be that. It would be a new era. That was too dizzying of a thought to entertain, so she tried to put it out of her mind, but doing that was impossible when she was to choose a new deputy.
“My clan,” she began. The words felt overwhelming on her tongue. RiverClan was always her clan in the sense of her family, but now it would be her clan in the sense of her leading it. She wondered not for the first time if her being deputy had truly been the right choice. Being a leader felt so daunting…but again, a thought to leave behind. She couldn’t let her mind be clouded now. “We still grieve the loss of Perchstar, but she is residing comfortably in StarClan. I will be leaving to the Highstones soon to retrieve my lives, but before then, we are in need of a new deputy.”
And there it was. The hardest decision. It was a question that had rolled in her mind for days. Who would be best suited to stand by her side as deputy? RiverClan was abundant with warriors, a fact that she was grateful for, and it left her with many options of cats to choose from. Her eyes scanned their faces, taking each of them in. She did not want a cat that would agree with everything she said, or one who would be too nervous to be truthful to her. In that same vein, she needed a cat that would not be too terribly aggressive. Their standing with other clans was still shaky at best, and she did not want a cat that would ebb away at those shaky standings until they broke entirely. Being deputy was a flexible position. It required heart and loyalty and love and knowledge.
It was also a hard position. Standing where she was now, knowing that whoever she chose may one day become leader and have all these responsibilities on their shoulders as they were on hers…It felt like a cruel choice. But it would have to be done. And if the cat she had in mind would accept it, Poppyshine believed that RiverClan would only continue to flourish, even after she was gone.
“I say this before StarClan so they may approve, and to all of you so you may as well.” Her gaze settled on the cat in question, looking at the ashen cat that sat towards the front. “Cindersky, I ask of you to be the new deputy of RiverClan.”
Cindersky, a young cat not unlike her, who gave so much love. She had proven her love and dedication to her clanmates several times before, including putting her life on the line to save their medicine cat from wolves. Poppyshine knew she could speak her mind as well. Though her blunt words had hurt Perchstar, Poppyshine would welcome that same cutting truthfulness. Poppyshine did not want to become a leader that did not listen to her clan, nor did she want to remain a naive cat. Both would bring risk to RiverClan. Her pride, what there was that she even had, was not worth pain and injury to her clan.
Willowwisp was confident in one thing for certain: she was a good warrior. She was a good warrior who had trained hard under senior warriors. Her mother had taught her everything she could have. With one brother gone, one sister eldered, and her other sister only a new warrior, she felt she had the most knowledge and experience from her mother’s lineage. As she grew, she wanted to fulfill any task that was given to her, and she would take on more if she needed. She had healed Sunpool and Rookflight’s friendship, she got to know her clanmates as best she could. Even in the face of her mother’s death, she kept a strong face just as her mother would have. With her mother now gone, Willowwisp wanted to do absolutely all she could to help her clan. If her mother was worthy of being a leader, then she, too, was worthy of being deputy. She was certain that Poppyshine saw and understood that.
But perhaps she didn’t. Willowwisp’s expression didn’t change when Poppyshine called out another name. Her eyes slid to the side, observing where Cindersky sat. Cindersky…she had been a mess of a warrior ever since the battle with SkyClan. Larkspring had been at her side, nudging her towards recovery the entire time, only for more slips and pitfalls to take place with Littlesplash’s death, and now she wallowed in Perchstar’s death. Was she truly to be
For perhaps the first time Willowwisp felt a new emotion curling in her chest and her eyes quickly peeled away from Cindersky to observe the sands as others chattered around her. It felt spiky and hot, and she did not have the word for it, but it remained all the same: spite, white-hot and frustrated and dripping through her veins.
Larkspring did not much care about who became deputy. So long as it was someone that could properly be relied upon, then any would do. It was a surprise when Cindersky’s name left Poppyshine’s tongue. His eyes widened and he looked at the cat he sat next to. Cindersky had been struggling the past few moons, but it did not mean that he did not have so much to give. She loved RiverClan, a fact that was obvious. She had strong opinions about how things should have happened in the past and she was willing to fight for all of them. It took but a second or Larkspring to think about before it became clear that Cindersky would of course be a fantastic choice.
He nudged Cindersky slightly and whispered in a low voice to only her, “You’ll be a great deputy.”

Cindersky T3 Warrior | RiverClan| she/her "i loved you like the sun."
Cindersky was, in truth, not paying much attention. Cats poured out from dens or over the edge of camp, she could hear their soft mutterings though the words did not make much sense to her. Larksprings shadow settled in beside her, and Rookflight to her other side. A smallest smile turned the corners of her lips. Like before.
Poppyshine began to speak and the only inclination of her attention was her ears turning forward. This would be a change. A change she did not wish would ever had had to come about, but one that could not be stopped no more than the days turning. That was something she had learned through gritted teeth and gruelling circumstance.
Her name was said, and it was like a stone in water. The fur on her neck raised in tandem with her head, wide eyes locking onto Poppyshine as though to say; 'Are you sure?'. She licked her lips, and then turned her head to Larkspring just as he whispered. The nudge spurred her to life. She raised to her paws, a rigid motion and she had to fight to keep her chest from shaking with a stuttered breath. Rule of three. Battle. Littlesplash. Perchstar. This was her reward, of sorts. Although she could not consider it that just yet. But she knew she could not let Poppyshine down, nor Perchstar, somewhere amongst Silverpelt and she knew she was watching them all.
"I accept," She almost surprised herself with the strength to her voice, betrayed only by the quiver of the tips of her ears and her paws. This was frightening. But all changes were, weren't they? This was just another. Bigger, but if she could get through everything that had happened, then...
She turned, swivelling her gaze over the gathering mass of cats and for a moment she felt like a fresh warrior again, before it had all taken place. That smile from before, the slight little thing, kept its perch on her face as she spoke. "RiverClan," The eyes on her, was this what Perchstar felt? That fear, but pride all the same? "We have been through... Much. And things have changed, and they will keep changing. But what won't is who we are, the companions and livelihoods we have made. And I will protect them. For as long, and as well, as I possibly can. And we will live, and love. I promise."
