Hunting Patrol for Skyclan [OPEN]

Falconmoon lead the first patrol of the morning. For once it was pleasantly cool out with little drops of dew still clinging to the plant life. The scent of birds and squirrels filled the air, causing the deputy's mouth to water. The clan would be fed first of course, but he'd kill for a mouthful of quail or pheasant right now. He looked back at the others past Lighttail, hoping to see a good day of hunting. Some still looked sleepy while others were more awake. He quickly made note of which warrior and apprentice preferred what time to patrol. The ones that were slower to awaken in the morning would be better suited to hunting closer to the evening, when the morning hunters were at their most tired.

"You lot go ahead and get started. I need to get a drink before I do anything." His mouth was dry and his throat was scratchy. Did he snore in his sleep? He hoped not. He hoped someone would tell him or give him a kick in the ribs to shut up. Falconmoon bent his head to lap up the cool creek water. His ears were on a swivel as always, alert to danger or opportunities to hunt prey.

Lighttail wasn’t the most awake at this hour. Much as she tried to change, she’d grown up nocturnal and remained a night owl. Still, the forest was pretty in the morning. At least there was that, and the prospect of a meal, to keep her awake. The scent of a bird reached her, but Lighttail ignored it in favor of a mouse she smelled a fox-length away. She was still working on her bird-hunting tactics and didn’t want to fail in front of the deputy. Her stomach threatened to growl as she lowered herself into her ambush position.

She shifted everything so slightly as the mouse came closer, the tip of her white tail flicking.

Her pounce wasn’t perfect, and her kill not the cleanest, but Lighttail was adapting to the terrain with prey to show for it.

Lighttail caught a mouse!
