Subject: Twilightkit's Apprentice Ceremony Mon 13 May 2024 - 16:35
Poppyshine
It had only been a couple of days since the last ceremony, but another cat was ready to become an apprentice. Poppyshine jumped up onto the Willow Branch again and gave herself a moment to look out at the cats milling around the camp. RiverClan was growing steadily despite their recent loss of numbers…And given the recent loss of some of their queens, it was important these kits be given new support through their mentors.
“Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting,” Poppyshine called and her eyes searched for the kit in question.
The days since Weepingwillow and his sibling's passing rolled together into a convoluted blur. There was little to nothing to separate each rising of the sun. That was until a few days ago, when Poppyshine came to tell Twilightkit and his brother that their apprentice ceremonies would be soon. Oleander's had been that very afternoon. Even with a few days between their ceremonies, Twilightkit still couldn't figure out what the emotions that had knotted in his belly during Poppyshine's visit were. Expectation, excitement? Nerves, dread? Anger, yet more grief? He knew not. He tried to focus less on the fact that he and Oleander were the only ones left to celebrate, concerning himself more with thoughts of the world outside. Maybe leaving camp would fix whatever had broken in him.
When he heard Poppyshine call the Clan together, Twilightkit dragged his eyes slowly away from the mossball he'd been staring at. Her green eyes rested on him, and so he knew it was time. Sighing quietly, he got to his paws and shuffled closer to the growing crowd, briefly looking around for his brother before turning his attention forward again.
Twilightkit’s brother had been named an apprentice a few days ago, and now Twilightkit would be joining him in the apprentice’s den. She met Twilightkit’s gaze and her tail waved, gesturing him forward so that the ceremony may begin. When he did, Poppyshine smiled and began the ceremonial words. “Twilightkit, you have reached the age of six moons. It is now time for you to be apprenticed. From this day forward, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Twilightpaw.” It was a lovely name for a lovely cat. There was something so gentle about the names that Weepingwillow had given her children.
The choice of an apprentice was a difficult one. Twilightpaw was the weakest of his siblings from what Poppyshine had seen, and so he would need a lot of help. She could have gone the route of a gentler touch to assist Twilightpaw, but she felt as though a stronger presence would do well for him, especially considering the loss of his mother. She continued, “Larkspring shall be your mentor. His strength and resilience will aid you as you on your way towards warriorhood.”
Larkspring did not have a great track record with apprentices. One gone missing, another ill, and now…now it seemed he would be getting a third. His eyes widened a bit and he glanced between the newly-named Twilightpaw and Poppyshine, wondering if she had somehow misspoken or perhaps she had confused his name for his sibling’s—but Rookflight had gotten an apprentice, the other one of this litter, and so that was unlikely. So this would be his apprentice…A third try, perhaps not to ruin this time.
He stepped forward and pressed his nose to Twilightpaw’s. They had at least spoken before, so he was aware, if even in the vaguest of terms, of what Twilightpaw was like. He said, “We’ll begin training soon. Be prepared.”
"You are alone in your grief because you choose to be"

A soft smile pulled at Oleanderpaw's maw as his brother stepped forward to receive his name and mentor. It was much easier to be happy for someone else, especially his sibling, though Twilight seemed to carry the same malaise and apathy towards his ceremony that he did. Maybe Oleanderpaw didn't know how to make himself feel much of anything towards his name, but maybe he could at least help Twilight.
He was the first to call out Twilightpaw's name, a soft purr rumbling in his throat as he gently pressed his head into the other tom's shoulder. "Congratulations, Twilightpaw. I'll help you get settled into the apprentice's den whenever you're ready. We'll have to train together plenty, alright?" He gave a toothy grin, too many teeth sitting awkwardly in his mouth as he tried to imbue his sibling with some optimism.

Twilightkit padded forward with no delay when Poppyshine waved him on. He didn’t see much point in delaying the ceremony that had already been held off for so long. He took his place in front of the Clan, felt their eyes crawling along his back, and nodded along to the ceremonial words. Then, just like that, he became Twilightpaw. Golden eyes blinked slowly. Nothing felt different. No great shift of perspective or personality overcame him. Sighing, Twilightpaw turned toward the crowd to look for his new mentor. At least he knew and liked Larkspring--one of the first cats he spoke to outside his family. Pressing back against the older tom’s nose when he approached, Twilightpaw said, ”Okay. I will.” and watched Larkspring depart.
It wasn’t long before Oleander stepped up to fill the space his new mentor left. Quiet purrs started up in Twilightpaw’s chest and he pressed his cheek against his brother’s neck. ”Thank you,” he rumbled. He let Oleander pull away and returned the broad smile his brother wore. ”Of course we will. I wouldn’t dream of anything else.”
