Subject: Lightkit's Apprentice Ceremony Fri Jan 26, 2024 11:56 pm
Poppyshine
With one ceremony completed, Poppyshine jumped right into another one. She had to ensure there was little delay between these ceremonies, both so everyone could keep warm and so the new apprentices could celebrate together.
“Keep close, for we have another cat that will be joining a higher rank,” Poppyshine announced. “Lightkit, please come forward.”
Despite all the fear and grief that had plagued the Clans as of late, there was one spark of hope at least in that the Clan still survived and grew. There had already been a pawful of apprentice ceremonies Lightkit had lingered around for when Poppyshine called his name. For a brief moment, he looked around, blinking in disbelief, then it dawned on him that he was indeed the only Lightkit; she was speaking to him.
Leaving the safety and warmth of the gathered Clan, Lightkit padded forward, shy and awkward at first. Once he gazed up at Poppyshine, however, the gravity of the situation dawned on him and he puffed his chest out a little. He was ready.

Poppyshine smiled encouragingly at Lightkit. She could tell he was a little nervous, but he also seemed excited, as most kits were when it was time for their apprentice ceremony. He looked prepared and she could see that gleam of readiness in his eyes.
“Lightkit, you have reached the age of six moons. It is now time for you to be apprenticed. From this day forward, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Lightpaw.” There was something almost fanciful about the young apprentice’s name. Light; light and hope and all things they could use in these trying times. She knew of a warrior who had struggled these past few months and could use that very light now.
“Your mentor shall be Rookflight. They have lived through many trying times and will help guide you as we persevere through this one. I know you can grow to be just as strong as they are.” She smiled down at the apprentice one last time before she sat back and allowed the mentor and apprentice to meet.
Rookflight hardly paid attention to the sound of Poppyshine's voice as she went through a pair of apprentice ceremonies. They were distracted with the more important fuss of their thoughts and the still-brittle feeling in their lungs. A third kit being called forth was of no import, as they knew no one in the nursery. They were ready to turn away entirely when Poppyshine called out their name.
Much the same as the one being promoted, a rush of dull surprise went through Rookflight. They swiveled back to look at Poppyshine, blinking baffedly toward her for a moment. Somehow, the thought hadn't occurred to him that a kit may be his apprentice someday. Rookflight pulled their eyes off the deputy, looking towards the spot of pale fur standing in her shadow. How would he do as a mentor? He worried the physical, and potentially emotional, strain of captaining training would prove too much for his deep exhaustion, his scattered-feather thoughts. But whatever Rookflight thought, it wasn't his position to deny the young tom a mentor. Rising to his paws, Rookflight crept from his seat at the fringes to approach Lightpaw. "Training may not begin soon, but you will learn." He spoke low, lingering phlegm in his throat. With a respectful nod, Rookflight finished, "Rest. Acquaint yourself with the others. I will find you when needed," and turned to retreat once again.

Lightpaw whirled on his paws as the sound of different pawsteps approached him. He greeted this Rookflight with a hopeful smile, blinking at the tuxedo cat's words. That was true, training probably wouldn't start until they got back to the true RiverClan territory. Rookflight dipped their head and assured Lightpaw that they would find him when needed. It was a little brusque, but he was sure Rookflight meant well. "O-Oh, uh, okay!" he meowed, watching the form of his mentor retreat back into the gathered cats. "I'll...I'll see you around!"
