Starting Early [c]

Quailprowler was happy to see her kits grow, already massive compared to the other kits. Just like her, and just like Vinecrawler. Now, they would learn to be more like them. After the kits had gained their footing, Quailprowler picked a perfect day to usher the kits out of the nursery and into a quiet corner of camp. Withholding as much frustration as possible, she lined the kits up so they could all equally see the view that she and her mate would provide. Yes, herself and Vinecrawler would give the kits their very first fighting lesson.

Quailprowler peaked around, her tall frame making it easy to peer over obstacles, looking for her mate. Not seeing him, she sighed and turned to her kits. "I'm sure you're all very excited to see what the surprise is," she cooed in the feral tongue that the pair of parents had been diligent to teach just as the forest tongue. "Once your father arrives, we'll teach you how to spar." Her eyes shown, a twinkle of excitement in her eyes. "The most important thing to know is that you must keep your claws sheathed and do not bite down hard. You don't want to hurt your siblings." She instructed the litter, an edge of seriousness in her voice.

Lakekit shuffled next to his littermates, tail swishing with excitement. Though perhaps a slight irritation was noticeable by the flick of his ears and the way he anxiously waited for his mother to finish explaining. "We know we know." The kit huffed, glancing at his siblings. "Don't inflict onto others what you would not want to be inflicted onto you." Besides, his siblings had really sharp claws. During play last time, he almost lost an eye! No, thank you. A moment passed before the exasperation became evident in his voice "Can you show us attacks now? I don't want to wait."

At first, Adderkit was eager to see just what her mama had to show her. But the look in her eyes quickly changed to one of disdain as she learned she would be sparring.

"Can I just watch? I don't want them touching me!" Her nose wrinkled as she looked at the other three. Of course, Lakekit was already growing excited at the idea of sparring, and she had no doubt that Blackkit and Bearkit would be looking forward to it, too.

She let out a groan, already picturing the response she would get at even suggesting not participating in the sparring. Was it so bad that she just wanted personal space? It wasn't like she couldn't easily take down all three of her littermates if she wanted to. It was the fact that she didn't want to that bothered her.

Frankly she would rather just go back to her nest. At least if they were sparring that would mean she would have the nest to herself.

This was the chance she'd been waiting for. Bearkit sat up as straight as she could, puffing her chest and raising her hackles to appear as ferocious as possible. She wanted nothing more than Quailprowler's approval– and she was certain that proving she was the best and brightest student would be a strong start. Her ears flicked in annoyance at Adderkit though, and her claws pricked the ground. You don't want to hurt your siblings... Turning back toward her mother pointedly, she raised her chin, a snobbish expression on her little round face. Adderkit could miss this lesson. It would just mean less competition. "I'm excited to learn." she mewed, curling her tail around her paws neatly as she spoke.

He watched his family with a softened gaze, living in this candid moment. Lakekit, Adderkit, Bearkit, and Blackkit were all that were left of his flesh and blood now and he would never take that for granted even in death. It was very possible that the growing fondness he held for his mate, Quailprowler, was mostly due to how great of a mother she has proven herself to be; the kits swarming her in excitement at the prospect of learning how to brawl, his mate reminding them all to be kind to each other during a spar.

It was honestly starting to be too much for his heart to bare!

He dropped into a crouch, slowly inching his way towards Quailprowler who currently had her back turned to him. His dark eyes were locked onto her, full intent on bowling her over in a surprise attack to impress his kits.

He leapt, claws sheathed and ready to tussle with Quailprowler... But one of his beloved kits shifted closer to their mother, forcing him to redirect himself at the last second to avoid crushing their bones beneath his body.

With a thud, Vinecrawler landed unceremoniously short of his gathered family, a plume of dust kicking up around him. His sandy ears were hot, but his face remained neutral as he tried (and failed) to make it look like he had meant to do that. "I am here now." Was all he could get out.

Blackkit had followed after her siblings with ease. Amber eyes flicking between those who had gathered around their mother, before falling onto her mother. Ears were perked, as she listened intently. Sparring? She was down for sparring! While she would rather use words sometimes, she still needed to know how to fight off even the worst of opponents.

"Alright Mother, no hurting each other." Blackkit confirmed, even though a part of her secretly wanted to go all out. Amber eyes flicked back, looking to their father as he arrived with a thud and a plume of dust. Ear flicking slightly, and a small smile appeared on the kit's maw, clearly the little black kit was amused by her father.

Quailprowler huffed a laughter as Vinecrawler came trudging next to her, her tail twitching in amusement. The father of her kits hardly had time to speak as the warrior she was launched herself at her mate, paws colliding and wrapping around him. The pair tumbled for a few heartbeats, leaving Quailprowler pinning Vinecrawler down. Amusement shined in her eyes.

"And that is how you actually attack." She taunted, purring slightly.
