i don't have any big lasting plans; i'm too cowardly to take a stand;

Ever since the war patrol had returned, the bodies of Mottlestar and others in tow, something had been on Flickerpaw's mind. The Clans believed in StarClan, spirits of ancestors that lived in the sky or something...but he wasn't sure what he believed in. It would be nice to think that the deceased lived on in that way, but it seemed almost silly to him. They were dead and buried, and that was it.

Flickerpaw lingered around the apprentices' den, lost in thought. Their gaze wandered around camp, finally settling on the massive form of Vinecrawler. Their ears perked. Vinecrawler wasn't native to the Clans, he was something...else. He spoke another language and he didn't look like the other, smaller cats. They hadn't spoken much about the incident regarding their mother with him, but they were curious now. What kind of beliefs did Vinecrawler even have? Did he believe in StarClan too?

Flickerpaw steeled their gaze and marched over to Vinecrawler, tail held high to at least look a little bigger. "I want to talk with you," they said, staring up into his wide face. "Can you escort us out of camp? It's a private conversation." Flickerpaw leaned in closer and lowered their voice. "It's about death and stuff."

It had been many moons since Flickerpaw had acknowledged him at all; not that he blamed the young tom. It was hard to grasp that the way his mother had died was just the way life was supposed to flow, especially when Vinecrawler seemed to just be another stranger in his life. He wasn't even sure if his adopted son even saw him as him as a father figure.

He doubted it.

Proof that the Now was always watching was Flickerpaw himself manifesting before him, his green eyes vaguely holding determination within them as he stared up into the warriors own brown ones. An escort for a private conversation, huh? He would not deny his son what was asked, even if he hadn't added onto it with 'death and stuff'. "Of course; come." Muscles rippled beneath sandy pelt as he moved from where he lay, leading the black tortoiseshell through the brambles that made up ThunderClan's front.

Once they were far enough away, he paused in his long strides, sitting down and wrapping his tail around large paws. "What is it about 'death and stuff' that you would like to speak about? You are free to speak how you wish; there is no judgement here."

Flickerpaw had mostly avoided Vinecrawler up until now. Every time he looked at the large tom, he remembered his mother's lifeless body laying in the snow with her blood covering Vinecrawler's claws. Most of the time, he couldn't bear to be around him. He hardly even considered the tom a guardian; Acornstar was more of a guardian to him than Vinecrawler ever was. And yet, he was following the huge cat outside ThunderClan camp to satisfy his curiosity. Hopefully it wouldn't be his downfall.

Flickerpaw's pelt tingled uncomfortably with nerves once they had reached a point far enough away from camp to talk. Vinecrawler sat and faced them, looking on expectantly. They remained standing, tail sweeping back and forth. They had spent the entire walk gathering their thoughts and now the moment was here. The tortoiseshell swallowed thick and forced themself to look Vinecrawler in the eye. "You're a ThunderClan warrior," Flickerpaw began. "You weren't always ThunderClan, however. You don't look like the rest of us, you speak a different language...Do you believe in StarClan? Or something else entirely?" They inclined their head, whiskers twitching.

"Why did you kill my mother?"

These were not questions Vinecrawler had expected, though they weren't very surprising. Flickerpaw hadn't been there for to witness how it all began. The tip of his striped tail twitched slightly as his eyes glanced up at a passing bird. "I have always been ThunderClan; born to a ThunderClan mother. My father before me, however, was not." He blinked, lowering his gaze to meet Flickerpaw's again. "The language Hank - my father - spoke when he arrived here comes from a land far, far away. A land far more beautiful than you could ever imagine: white sand encircled by crystal blue waters in an endless summer. A dense forest that shielded you from the worst of storms. Paradise." Recalling the lake territories, a deep sadness plagued him for a moment. Those lakes may be the closest he would ever come to the paradise his father experienced. "I do not follow StarClan, no. Believe in it? Perhaps it does exist, but when my loyalties lie elsewhere, there is no room for StarClan. I follow Gekala and speak its feral tongue, because I choose to do so. Not everyone with feral blood follows them, just as not all of the forest follows StarClan; my father made it clear that it was a choice that should be respected. And he's right. I can teach you more if you're interested."

The next question mewed out of the young toms mouth made Vinecrawler's sandy ears flick back briefly. "I didn't have a choice." He remembered that cold, winter day. He had just caught a fresh squirrel when a cat made of skin and bone had attacked him. He hadn't known why, but assumed it had been over prey. "Over prey, if I had to guess. Maybe even over you and your sibling. I had caught a squirrel when she snuck up on me, her claws meeting my flank before I even knew she was there. She hadn't uttered a single word during our fight, so I assumed it was kill or be killed. And so I killed." Every statement he said was fact to him, and it felt like he didn't need to feel sorry for something already long past, even if he felt sorry that the kits were without a mother. No cat could change the past. "My only regret is finding out she had two kits with her. But that... Is just how survival works. We were all hungry and tired. ThunderClan and the rest of the forest had suffered a long famine alongside a plague before and during the Lake. I'm sorry Castella is no longer with you."
