OATFLUFFare you going to age with grace? he/him - t2 windclan warrior
Oatfluff had been working almost nonstop with the arrival of spring, and today was no different. The sun shone high in the sky, and the moor was alive with the plentiful scents of prey. He walked quietly through the vibrant fields, practically floating, and glanced over at his companion beside him. Pantherpounce. Somehow, though there wasn't too much of an age different between them, Oatfluff had never actually spoken to the time outside of a few spare words on patrol. The fluffy, broad-shouldered tom studied his dark-furred Clanmate for a moment, noticing how his muscles rippled as he stalked along the moor. How had they never properly talked before?
"Hey, Panther. You smell that?" Oatfluff stopped to taste the air, grinning in satisfaction as his nose was proved correct. A squirrel! A bit of a rare find for WindClan, too. "I've got it!" He whispered loudly. The tom kept himself still, looking in the direction of the scent to see if he could spot the squirrel. And he could - a small distance away, but its grey-brown pelt stood out among the verdant hills. It was peeking out from the entrance to a tunnel, but as Oatfluff watched, it disappeared down into the tunnels. Uh-oh. Oatfluff padded quietly toward where the rodent had disapppeared, keeping low to the ground. The tall grass brushed his belly fur now, but he didn't let anything distract him from his quarry.
He'd never hunted in the tunnels before, but he could never manage to pounce on the squirrel in the cramped maze of burrows. No - he'd have to wait for his prey to poke its head out again. Unfortunately for him, it never did. Oatfluff's ears flicked to the side, a bit annoyed as he sniffed at the tunnels. Where did it go? Fox-dung. Hopefully it was still down there - still, he was embarassed to have lost his prey in front of the tom.
"Pantherpounce!" He called quietly, his voice travelling on the wind toward his hunting buddy. They were downwind of the squirrel, but he could never catch it while it was down there. Oatfluff gestured toward the tunnel with a sweep of his tail, his eyes bright with an idea. "If you go to the other end of the tunnel, I can flush the squirrel out towards you!"
Oatfluff lost the squirrel! ( Tunnel Bonus active: +2 to all Hunting rolls! )

From what Pantherpounce knew of Oatfluff, he was a bit of a talker. It wasn't like the smokey tom was upset by it, though. He didn't mind talkers because it gave him the opportunity to simply listen in silence, which was obviously his strong suit. The scent of the squirrel seemed to reach them both at the same time, because once the tom turned his head to look at his companion, Oatfluff had already pointed out the smell. The warrior wasn't a fan of the tunnels solely because they were made for smaller bodies to travel though. He had been given a bigger frame since birth, and although that was a blessing in combat, it was a hinderance when it came to the tunnels. He met Oatfluff's eyes before nodding and heading to the tunnel's opening to try and attempt to trap the squirrel. It would have to come out eventually, especially since Oatfluff had just scared it off into the tunnels. He hooked an paw into the tunnel's entrance once the slightest movement of a shadow indicated that it was near, but its small body was able to turn around nimbly in the tunnels and head for the other direction.
"Smart idea," Pantherpounce commented once the squirrel was out of reach in the tunnels once again, "But I think this squirrel isn't as stupid as we think."

Oatfluff's eyes narrowed, peering down into the tunnel with slit pupils. Fox-dung. His tail lashed briefly as he tried to push down his annoyance. It was just a squirrel, anyway. What mattered much more was Pantherpounce's praise. A low purr rumbled in the tom's throat. "Thanks, Panth! Though it would've been a lot smarter if I hadn't missed the thing in the first place." He straightened up and padded back toward the muscular warrior, shaking out his pelt. "There's other prey, anyway - I don't think squirrels are anyone's favorite." Oatfluff snorted. He'd much rather bite into a nice rabbit or a bird.
The stout tom began to walk again, keeping his ears perked for any lingering prey - or that pesky squirrel, if it came back. Really, he was just enjoying Pantherpounce's company. Though the dark-furred warrior was much quieter than Oatfluff was, he didn't mind one bit. It just meant he could talk more! Their energies blended much better that way, anyway - the company of much louder warriors could be exhausting.
He did want to get to know Pantherpounce better, though drawing him out of his shell might prove to be difficult. Oatfluff frowned, scanning the horizon as he thought. Maybe he could just ask him. He seemed a lot more straightforward, anyway - he got the feeling that try to steer the conversation in his Clanmate's direction would only fall flat. "Speaking of squirrels, Panther, what's your favorite prey?" Oatfluff stopped himself there. Really, he could keep going - what's your favorite prey, and flower and part of the territory and weather and - no. He needn't scare him off. He just needed a simple conversation starter.

Pantherpounce wasn't too upset about the lack of squirrel between the both of them as well. Their meat was far too chewy for his taste anyway. "Maybe it's not a bad thing that it got away, then. No point in bringing back squirrel when it'd get buried beneath countless rabbits, I suppose." The large tom droned as Oatfluff reached his side. As the two of them continued on their trek, Pantherpounce took the time to examine his surroundings. There were a few moments of silence between them, and the warrior could tell that his patrol companion was attempting to conjure up some sort of conversation topic.
Favorite prey? Well, he had never been asked that before. He was silent for a couple of heartbeats before he decided on an answer.
"Hares." He confirmed with a slight nod. He had to say more than that, didn't he? That was how conversations worked. The tom searched his brain for something he could say to keep the pace flowing. "Have you ever tried fish? Nevermind, don't even answer that. Thinking about the scales and how slimy they must be is going to annoy me." He shook his head. It was true... the concept of eating fish was something that the tom would never understand.

Oatfluff's whiskers twitched in amusement. He could tell Pantherpounce was at least trying to make conversation, and it meant a lot to the talkative tom. Butterflies took flight in his chest and he smiled softly at the ground. Before, he hadn't known much about the smokey tom other than his impressive skill as a warrior. He was definitely a strong and admirable Clanmate - he always had been. But when you got past that stoic exterior, he seemed like a really good cat. Oatfluff chuckled at his reply, then tasted the air a bit distractedly. He felt...a little nervous, admittedly, but he wasn't sure why. They were just talking about prey. Small talk, really.
It was easy to talk to Pantherpounce, he found. Fish. Ew. As they padded along, Oatfluff couldn't suppress his laughter. Then he recoiled dramatically and stuck his tongue out. "Blegh! Fish are the worst, officially. I don't understand why anyone would wanna eat that. 'Ohhh, look at this slippery creature I found, it smells weird so we should definitely eat it.' Ew. I'm so glad I wasn't born RiverClan." The tom's soft brown gaze was bright, a new spark in them as he spoke with his friend. Yes, he'd already decided Pantherpounce was his friend. "Y'know what's worse?" Oatfluff laughed softly, a mocking shiver traveling along his spine. He had to look up to make eye contact with Panther. "Frogs. Maybe not worse, because they're not all wet and floppy like fish, but I've never understood why anyone would eat a frog. ShadowClan cats aren't right in the head."
Then his smile eased, and he seemed to grow oddly serious. Something had occurred to him. "Panth, can I ask you something?" He hoped the tom wouldn't mind the nicknames.
