Subject: Always Prepared [Rookflight] Thu 14 Mar 2024 - 12:12
The recent war had seemingly ended, but Swandive wasn't convinced it was over... Or that it would stay over, if all the stories she had heard of Skyclan being so vengeful were even partly true. And after yet another apprentice had died... She had resolved to be ready for any threat that the clan might face. Perhaps it was mild paranoia, but she didn't trust things would be easy for Riverclan after they had killed two Skyclan cats, nor with the rogue filth that seemed to skulk about their territory.
"Rookflight!" She approached the older warrior, determination in her expression, "Spar with me." She demanded, hardly bothering with a proper greeting even. Well rested after a patrol earlier in the day, the she-cat was impatient and bursting with energy she hadn't felt in a while.
Swandive's approach caught them off-guard, but Rookflight was receptive. The surprised twitching of their whiskers turned subtly to amusement. They weren't expecting to be assailed with demands of a spar, but... it was understandable. RiverClan faced enough strife necessitating claws recently. It was important for all of them to keep their practical skill as sharp as their words and minds, if they wanted to prevent needless violence and death in the future. "Alright," they agreed with a nod. "But I will not go easy on you. I would expect the same."
They allowed a moment for Swandive to get into position and did the same. Just when their paws were settled into place, Rookflight moved forward; fast, closing the distance between them in an instant to get at Swandive's side and fix their teeth around her scruff. They didn't bite hard enough to cause real pain, but they held on with enough pressure to ensure she wouldn't move. Rookflight used Teeth Grip, dealing 8 damage and costing 10 SP Swandive is gripped for 1 turn.

Wouldn't go easy on her? "Good." If her clanmates went easy on her in a spar, how would she ever be truly prepared for an actual fight? Fighting cats was something far different than fighting weasels or geese, something she wanted, no, needed more practice in. "Can't learn otherwise." Rookflight's opening move was to grasp at her scruff, not what she'd expected from them. Swandive herself would have jumped at him with paws outstretched, reasoning that starting off strong with more damage would have worked better... But his grip on her scruff made it difficult to twist around and strike back. She managed to bat at him with a paw, though it was awkward. For the moment her clanmate was able to control her movements... But that wouldn't last long.
Swandive used Front Paw Blow for -5 sp, dealing -6 damage.
Swandive squirmed in the grasp of his teeth, catching him with a few quick blows, but her lack of leverage left little weight in them. Still, Rookflight folded his ears down and narrowed his eyes to guard what was sensitive. When they felt the pressure in their jaw start to slacken, they sought an opportunity between swipes to release Swandive's scruff with a nod-- and a backward feint that let him catch her shoulder.
Rookflight used Front Paw Strike, dealing 8 damage and costing 7 SP.
A bit more squirming, and Rookflight released his grip on her, scooting backward and catching her with a paw to the shoulder. Swandive growled, though nodded in recognition that her clanmate had pulled one over on her to start with. She leaped, aiming to use her weight to drag Rookflight to the ground. Not as secure a grip as she would have liked, but it would have to do.
Swandive used Leap and Hold for -15 sp, dealing -8 damage. Rookflight is pinned 1 turn.
To no surprise, Swandive leaped to close the distance between them. Rookflight rolled, part surprise and part allowance, until she had them pinned securely against the wet earth. He didn't squirm the same way she had trying to get to her paws; instead, he lay still, waiting for the moment her balance shifted. When her paws began to slide off their shoulders, they scrabbled suddenly at the ground, finding just enough purchase to force Swandive off, rising with a testing snap around her leg.
Rookflight attempted Duck and Twist... attempt successful! Dealt 7 damage and cost 5 SP. Rookflight is no longer pinned.
For a good moment Swandive had thought she had her clanmate down, but as she began to lose her grip, Rookflight rose quickly, shaking her off with seeming ease as their teeth briefly closed around her leg. Swandive stumbled, then swiped a paw at her sparring partner. They seemed to have an answer for her moves... She would simply have to apply what was used against her the next time they eventually sparred.
Swandive used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -8 damage.
